How does the Microsoft Exchange Server work?

My dad is interested in getting one for his business, he already has a server, but not the exchange software. Could you please help me understand how the exchange server works?

1. Read Microsoft's documentation on Exchange, it goes into a lot of detail on Exchange.
2. you will need to get in touch with microsoft to get a dedicated server setup or configure your server with them
3. You don't need to call Microsoft ... sheesh. You'll spend forever on the phone with them and IF you are LUCKY, you'll get as much as 1/3 of the answers you need. Call a local verified Network Consultant. Have them come in and explain everything to your dad, review his current hardware and recommend a solution(s). It's a lot easier than any of us typing out the explanations.
