Bandwidth Speed.?

OK Im looking for a dedicated server, but Im not 100% sure how fast the bandwidth is, the one I am looking at says it has a 512Kbit virtual data pipe how fast is that?? I have 16Meg broadband at home is it measured the same way, so if downloading from the dedicated server the max download speed would be 512 Kbps? Thanks
