Your Server

How much bandwidth does it take to host a private game server?

I am attempting to host a private Ragnarok Online server for my friends to play (and others as I get it worked out). If my computer is operating as the server, I am assuming the game will be uploading information to players. (I may be wrong, I am not 100% on how this works yet -.-'). If I end up having a lot of players, I am worried about getting a really expensive internet service bill, or having to shut down the server. Any recommendations where I can purchase a dedicated server, how much that costs or how much it will cost for me to host it myself? My computer never shuts off, so I figure that shouldn't be a problem. I do have about 50-75$ a month set aside for website hosting and file hosting as well as extra internet costs. Again, I am just plain dumb and am not 100% on how this works. Thanks for the help~

  1. 1) Residential upload speeds are capped very low. 2) Depends on the game how many people you can host. Something like Counter-Strike:Source takes anywhere from 512 kbit to 768 kbit to run a 10 man private server. Most home residential connections are capped at 128 kbit up to 2 mbps in some cases. You aren't really going to be able to effectively host that many clients. You could probably host a game server on a dedicated box or VPS, depending on game requirement.
