Your Server

Running a Server from Home - How do you do this?

We work on some projects, scripts, which needs sometime dedicated server to host to run. As dedicated servers are just an extra cost for us, as we do need this hosting for just testing purpose for 10 to 20 days for script. So i am thinking to run own webserver for this job from my home. Can anyone tell me what is needed for this type of task, and is it feasible... have you done this before, if so what have been your experiences? Note: I have extra desktop pc. with DSL internet Connection with unlimited bandwidth.... --- I want to run Unix/Linux, with Apache.... but I am not much sure, how to link our domain name with this server.... Hope you can answer the question asap Thanks in advance.

  2. You could check with your ISP to see if you can register the domain name with your IP address. But chances are your IP address aren't fixed, and therefore likely to chance (so your ISP will have to give you a fixed IP address first, which will cost you). But if you set up a server at home, make sure your router understands to which computer it has to route incoming requests (for instance: if you setup a website, you'll need to open up port 80 on your router, forwarding requests to port 80 to the server). Then you can simply connect to the server via it's IP address.
