Can a Virtual Private Network (VPN) be setup on a peer to peer network?

We have a 4 computer peer to peer network that runs through our cable modem router. We do not have a dedicated server but I need to setup a Virtual Private Network so our accountant can login to our system to download a backup without us taking the time to post it to an ftp site. Can a VPN be setup without a dedicated server?

  1. A lot of higher-end consumer routers support VPNs--you may need to buy a better router. But no, you don't need a server to run a VPN.
  2. should be able to install virt net on the admin comp with sharing might consider passwording it if there is a chance of connection with the net on the virt net for security
  3. Yes, any time there is network connectivity, no matter the form, VPN should be possible. The type of implementation and how is really the only question remaining. I don't know how to do it myself, as I have never had a need for an ad-hoc VPN, but it's certainly possible even if it's just a simple SSL tunnel. I would suggest checking out OpenVPN and see what they have to offer.
