How to get a fast website?

Getting feedback that our website is slow in some countries - customers reporting that our webpages take a long time to appear. What can we do? Our site is on a dedicated server, looking for a quick and easy solution.

2. No matter what you do, the speed that they can see your website is dependent on their connection speed and their distance from your server. You can't change that. You can optimize until you're blue in the face and they'll only be able to download the content at a certain speed. What you CAN do is ensure all your content (such as pics, movies, media) are lowered slightly in quality in order to reduce file size. The smaller the amount they have to download in order to see your website, the faster the load time.
3. Gamegen is right. The further your website data needs to travel across the internet to the browser of your visitor the longer its going to take. You can reduce that time by reducing the amount to data that needs to transfer. You can do a lot of this 'by hand' i.e. by reducing your image sizes or you can use a website accelerator product like aptimize that automates everything for you. Just be especially aware the of the web page load speeds in the countries where you do the most business if its taking longer than 6 seconds then you really need to do something about it.
