Your Server

How can I go about creating a local server accessible to other computers?

I'd like to make a server out of one of the computers in my house that other computers could connect to. Not so much for transferring files like a workgroup, but more for 2 or more computers to be able to play games with eachother that require they be connected to the same server ip. Another preference I have is that it would be implemented over a wireless network. Any tips or places I can be directed towards for more info is appreciated.

1. one option is to install linux to the computer serving as the server then install ethernet cards on all computers and get a switch (or a hub) and connect the computers to the switch.
