Is my dedicated server faster for my customers?

I had a shared server and now have got a virtual dedicated server which my host says is faster. How can I test this for myself?

1. To test how fast the current server is, go to http://www.speedtest.net. Download their speed test and upload it to your server. Connect to it and test your speed. (You have to be topologically close to the server for a speed test to have any meaning.) As far as how you'd compare that to the old server, I have no idea. It would probably involve going back in time and testing that server with the same program.
2. if your slower it might be worth it to invest in a load balancer. A load balancer will clear up the cluster on your server ultimately creating a faster, more reliable, more secure server.
