Dedicated servers management?

I was wondering if I were to rent a server, how would I have access to it? Like how can I control the server to do certain task, such as using Bittorent to get certain files into my server? And what OS do service provider normally use (unless required by customer)? I'm new to these hosting, so I was kinda want some advice and tips on how should I manage my server

1. you can use remote administration tools like VNC and radmin .. .
2. You can get a shared server with other customers on the same server as your, or you can get a dedicated server which the server is yours, which you can purchase a control panal for ease of use. I just use remote desktop to log in.
