What server should I get for a network of 5 to 10 computuers?
I need to set up a network for between 5 to 10 computers all of which will be doing processor and memory hungry tasks. I want to store ALL information and data on the server which will then be accessed by potentially 10 pcs. What server specification should I be looking at? What other considerations are there? Each pc should also have internet access, should I have a separate internet and mail server?

- if you want to control the network and its internet i suggest you to get windows server 2003 or 2007, but if you just want it for file saving windows XP pro will be fine..
- Windows Server 2008 is too pro. Just MY Network in XP, create network by putting IP address. RemoteAdmin can be helpful.
- As you you seem uninformed about the issues, prepare a specification of what the client computers will be used for, the level of activity, the software to be used, the storage volumes & etc. Then take it to 2/3 suppliers, listen to their questions then rewite the spec. and get them to quote against your requirements. It is exactly the same problem as wanting to buy a xxxxer for making yyyys in the zzzz industry when you have little knowledge. Any how if I told you to buy a Dell 1234 would you go and do that?
- Hardware Requirements Server. •2 x Intel ® Xeon TM Dual Core (5050 or 5130 or above). •5 x 76GB SAS HDD. •4 GB FM RAM. Software Requirements Server. •Windows 2003 Standard Edition Sercice back2. and you nees Microsoft ISA Note: 1- Shadow Copies must be disabled on Database server. 2- Schedule windows update must be done weekly.
- i would use Windows Home Server.
- I would highly recommend Windows SBS 2003 or 2008 (Small Business Server). They both have the ability to setup network security and internet/email accounts. At this point I would suggest 2003 as it is tested and Service pAcks have been released. This system will also be expandable into the future for up to 50 Users (maybe 75 i can't remember). Using the Wizards and consoles it is quite straight forward to setup. Try this link http://www.microsoft.com/sbs/en/us/default.aspx Good Luck!
- You need a Windows Terminal Server, let this do all the work. Dell Dual quad core lots of RAM, RAID 5 x 4 SAS 15,000 RPM drives
