Why can't I send e-mail using my gmail account in Ipod touch?

I tried a hundred times and played with the settings, changed to IMAP, but although I can receive e-mails through my gmail, I cannot send any e-mails. Every time I try I get an error message saying `the connection to the outgoing server smtp.gmail.com failed`. *should be `through my ipod touch` not gmail

1. because apple ipods may not support the gmail hardware needed
2. it means your internet is down or cant find a connectin or the username/password is wrong make sure you have internet first.... at least thats what i do with my iphone a touch is basically the same
