Your Server

Bandwidth for hosting a game server?

I want to host a Star Wars Battlefront II dedicated game server on my PC. But my connection is only 384K, so you can imagine the lag... :( I want to host a server with 32 or 40 people on it, using my computer as a server. I will also use the same computer to play in the server (this is so I can have a dedicated server while still being able to play in it). What kind of bandwidth do I need? 3M? 6M? Thanks :D GUYS. I've acknowledged the fact that 384K won't cut it. What I am asking is HOW MUCH MORE I need. 3M or 6M? Something like that. Please read all the details, people.

  1. 32-40 people on a listen server? Not a chance, sorry. Most you will get without causing major lag is 8 people. Your connection is not the only factor. You also have to remember that your pc will be compiling all the vector data being sent to the server at the same time as it's trying to put the next frame up on the screen. What you are suggesting is to play the game on full graphics for one player, and to work the vectors, physics and coordinates of 39 others at the same time! This is something that requires a dedicated server. The 384kbps is fine if you want to run a dedicated server, but playing on it at the same time just won't work. i think you misunderstood my answer. I'm saying that unless you have a really powerful pc, it wont work. Bf battles can usually involve huge numbers of players on screen at the same time, these numbers are also bolstered by bots. This creates a huge amount of geometric and locational data as well as physics and AI. I am saying that only a very powerful server will be able to work on that and graphics. Go to a dedicated server rental site online and you'll find that the connection speed is rarely quoted. The specs of the server system and the monthly up and down rates are the important details.
