Is it Hard to Setup and Manage a Dedicated Server at Godaddy?

Hello Everyone! I run a few websites on a Godaddy shared hosting plan. So far my sites are fine, but I know that if I start to build a lot of traffic (which I hope will happen within the next few months), that I will need a dedicated server eventually. Right now I manage everything myself (website setup and shared hosting), and have good basic computer skills. However, I have NO experience with a dedicated server at all, and don't have a clue about how they work. I have heard they are hard to set up. So my question is, does anyone have experience setting up a dedicated server? If so, would I be able to do this myself, or is it much harder to set up compared to Godaddy's shared hosting? Do you have any recommendations on how I could learn to do this myself? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer into this! Have a great day.

  1. Hi! I would recommend you to consider a VPS host like http://www.slicehost.com first. It's like an intermediary between shared hosting and a dedicated server and it works really great. They have plans starting from $20/month up to $800/month, great tutorials on how to setup your slice, like install Ubuntu on it, setup apache and everything you need. They are great even for Ruby on Rails apps. Check them out.
  2. I think if you are concerned about traffic increase you should look for a company which also provides you load balancer or a shared load balancer. I think NaviSite-Dedicated Hosting which is an Enterprise Class Host can give you better service. It also has a great shared load balancer option with Dedicated Serevrs. You can also look into their Virtual Dedicated Server offering. http://dedicatedhosting.navisite.com
