One Last Linux/WINE Question...Please?
OK, I am trying to set up a dedicated media server. I need to run many different formats of video, because I collect subtitled non0import anime (among other Japanese films). The players I need are Media Player Classic (CCCP), GOM Player, VLC Player KM Player...and a few others. I have audio in standard mp3, as well as FLAC and APE, so I need to run Foobar2000, Winamp, etc. I would also need to power either an 8800GT or 8800GS video card and an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card. Is there hope for me on this...or am I doomed to Vista? Thanks again. 16K: I need all of these players because fansubs are VERY particular. Some will only run on one player. I know it sounds odd, but it is true. Thanks for the info. Also, no specific reason for Vista. Three of my boxes run XP, but my main computer runs Vista and it would be a major pain to change back to XP.

- Try this xVirtualbox you can play with and test any operating system you like, so just download virtual box from the web link below.
- Im not sure Im clear on why you need to run so many players. VLC should be able to play pretty much any format, and MPC is only depends on external codecs - so if you have the codecs it should also be able to play any format. Also, did you know that VLC runs natively in linux and can stream media? For a dedicated media server I use XBMC in XP. The reason is that it boots and starts the media centre in under 10 seconds. (This is actually almost as fast as my stand-alone dvd recorder) As far as Linux goes, you have choices between geexbox, mythtv, 'entertainer', xbmc, linux mce, boxee and a host of others; both stand alone apps and distros designed as MC's. Linux will run the 8800 series cards, and you shouldnt have any probs with your sound card. You have plenty of options in linux natively, dont see why you have to depend on WINE to set up a dedicated media server. Also, why is vista the only os you see as an alternative? XP is just as capable of running a media centre, and may perform faster.
