  1. Soooo many different options - essentially if you have two PCs running, windows, mac or linux you can connect them by 'sharing' folders - hit F1 in windows and look up sharing folders/files. If you're more technical and don't want to pay anything, go for Linux - you can download the software from the link on wikipedia, from Redhat or other suppliers. Usually on windows if you install or purchase Windows Server (versions called 2000, 2003 are server equivalents to Windows NT or XP), you need to purchase additional 'licenses' for each person that can connect to that server. Connections - easiest is wires, but getting more popular (and now probably easier to set up for multiple users) is the wireless option where you simply hook up a router. Check out the wiki links below, but generally do searches on network(ing) and sharing files between computers.
  2. Without a doubt, you want the Netgear ReadyNas NV+ Fill it with hard drives and a gig of RAM, and you've got a BEAST of a file server... I've supplied this to many satisfied clients, and we use it ourselves.
