Your Server

SMTP query please..?

Hi I am using a software which is triggered arbitrarily, & when it is triggered I need to go online immediately to use it. Now since I cant be online watching the s/w all day long, the software though has come up with a feature which enables to text me whenever its triggered. & now for the text to enable it needs these 6 fields (of which I have answered what I think the answer s’d be): SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com Sender Name: my name Sender Email: my gmail address Recipient Name: my name Recipient Email: my yahoo address Cc: my cell phones e-mail address, so that I get the text. Now the problem is, when I test it, it starts ok, but in the middle it stops giving a message: ‘eMail fail. 530.5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first. h19sm17318201wxd.16’ Any idea what went wrong? I know its long email but I am trying to debug this since sometime now but it wont work. So I thought of posting it here if any of you guys can suggest me something.. thanks.. :) THANKS FOR SUCH A QUICK REPLY. THANK U VERY MUCH... :) now which ISP. i use comcast at home & nextel wireless on my laptop when i am in office. also then wont i have to change the Senders Email address, as it wont be gmail anymore & s'd be from nextel instead? thanks again.. :) no David.. i am not coding the s/w.. i am just using it...

  1. SMTP Server: Assigned by your ISP. You'll need to fin out what it is from your Internet Service Provider. Everything else you put seems fine.
  2. STARTTLS is an extension to the SMTP protocol and is described in RFC 2487: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2487.txt Basically, it adds some security mechanisms. You execute it as a command by itself (ie send STARTTLS to the SMTP server) and you get a response. It makes sense, because you are using an SMTP server that is not local to you - ie GMail's SMTP server - so it needs authentication. Are you coding the software? If so, add this. Otherwise, perhaps you can use a local SMTP server, ie your ISP's SMTP server.
