Your Server

Buying a server? Using a hosting companys server?

I have just created a website that is guarenteed to get high bandwidth. I dont have a server(s) in fact I dont know much about servers. A hosting company has an offer for a dedicated server, I just simpluy upload my website to their server and they host the site. There offer includes UNLIMITED BANDWIDTH. However, they are charging £400 Per month. Can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it is to buy a server that would withstand high bandwidth. (im not talking YOUTUBE bandwidth here) however I would need a high amount of bandwidth. Also, If I do decide to buy a server and run my website from my own home, what internet providers would allow me to do this. as there is the "fair usage policy" Hope you can help....

  1. If you can seriously anticipate that amount of traffic, you'll want to go with a hosted solution. A single server likely won't be able to handle it so you'll need a cluster and a website designed to run on a cluster. Rackspace is the host that I prefer for such critical websites.
  2. If I were you, I would go with a hosted website instead of buying a server. However, I would find another webhost because 400$ seems a bit high. Although I can't say I'm an expert on website hosting prices, 400$ sounds like a ripoff. 100$ would be a good limit. As far as servers go, they can range from 0$ to 5000$ just for one! If you go with LINUX, it is free. If you go with Microsoft servers, they are expensive! You can go with something in between. However, managing a server is not easy stuff. You have to learn how to secure it and maintain it. Since you said you don't know about servers, go with the hosted server solution but find a cheaper one. Search in google for "website hosting". As for which internet providers will let you run your own webserver, that depends on what isp is around you. Most don't let you do this because they don't want you eating up their bandwidth or they prefer that they host it for you so they can make more money.
