Your Server

Is it possible to host a Game server from home?

if not what are the restrictions? & how would one begin to host a game server if they are not from home. I assume the biggest problem is having an internet connection to deal with the high bandwidth problem. How do the server provides get the connection needed?

  1. You can buy (almost) any bandwidth you want from your provider. And, unless your provider has rules against it, or blocks the ports you need, you can run any server you want from home. (I run a web server and an FTP server. Since my provider blocks port 80, I run on a different port.)
  2. Yes! Yes of course it is!! All you need is a computer, and the software required to run a game server. I run an HTTP server, for webhosting, so I do have some experience with servers. I run Windows Server 2003 (since I can't afford 2008). Windows Server 2003 is an operating system, just like Windows XP, Vista, Leopard, or even one of Linux's Operating Systems. Let me provide you with the steps required to set up and run a game server: >>First off, clear everything you don't need off this computer, as it will only slow it down. >>Hook your computer up to your Internet connection and forward the port that the game you plan to use uses. >>Install the software required to run your game server onto your server. For example, if you wanted to run a game server for Halo, the PC version, you would simply go to Halo's website ((http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo/)) and download their software. The SERVER software is available at ((http://www.microsoft.com/games/PC/halo.aspx#downloads)). Scroll down, it's towards the bottom. Don't forget to download the update and the map files. 3. something niether of the others mentioned is that you need to get a static ip address from your isp for your server. if you have a dynamic ip it changes every time you reboot your computer so you'd be constantly resending your new ip addy to your players. do not count on windows being able to stay up without a reboot. cause it's been my experience that xp has to reboot at a minimum twice weekly to maintain a useable speed.
  4. Do you really intend to pass such an expensive and complicated process? You should know your site would be unavailable whenever your PC is turned off, and you're leaving yourself open to attacks. So I recommend get a reliable company to do that in return for a few dollars. As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements.
