Your Server

Why do I need to run a DNS on my microsoft small business server (SBS)?

Our internet service provider has a primary and secondary DNS, aren't these good enough? Why would our small LAN in the office need a DNS in our microsoft SBS?

  1. i am guessing that you dont but it makes things easier tha typing ip address all the time
  2. The fact of the matter is, you don't. The only time you'd need Microsoft's DNS server is if you have dynamic ip addresses (DHCP) on machines *THAT NEED TO BE ACCESSED FROM THE OUTSIDE*. Even then, there are better solutions than using Microsoft DNS. As an ISP myself, I would not recommend that you use Microsoft's DNS server. They have a lot of good stuff, but the DNS server isn't one of them. And remember..."Friends don't let friends run MS Exchange."
