Can I reinstall Win. Small Business Server 2003 R2 from Safe Mode?

I have problems with the new server running MS Small Business Server 2003 R2. I was trying to reinstall OS when loading from CD-ROM but in one of the first dialogs I got a message that my hard drives were not found. Will it make a difference if I try to reinstall OS from Safe Mode? Yes they are SATA drives. And no, I haven't fixed the "Applying computer settings" yet. Actually I tried to reinstall APC server and console in safe mode, but next time I tried to load server I got a message that I have to run "Directory Services Restore Mode". It's so messed up, I have no idea what to do now. Data is not a problem either, it's a brand new server, not even connected to other workstations yet.

  1. It will still request the drivers disk for your hd's. If they are SCSI, you should be able to get a driver disk from the mfg.
  2. No, what you are missing are the drivers for your RAID or SCSI probably. When you get to Windows Installation Screen, you will see at the bottom a message that says "Press F6 to install 3rd party drivers". If you do that, then you will be presented with a screen asking you to insert the floppy with the drivers. Of course you will have prepared that in advance. Have you tried my other suggestion to your other question "Applying Computer Settings" taking a long time? It might save you the hassle to have to go through a reinstall. I hope you made a backup of your data because you might loose it. Added 02/20 So if you don't have any data, why not a reinstall? Here is how to restart in that mode: http://technet2.microsoft.com/WindowsServer/en/library/403ac7a9-395a-4c21-971f-9c3b6f4563631033.mspx?mfr=true
  3. No, but it sounds like you have a sata drive. look inside the case at the hard drive and see if there is a large ribbon about 2 inches wide connecting to your hard drive or a really small wire that connects to it.if it's a small wire it's sata.you will have to make a floppy disk with the drivers for your motherboard. and then boot the disk and press f6 at first start up and and it will ask for it when ready.
