Does Linux server software such as Debain, Ubuntu Ent. use different port numbers that Windows IIS? Im trying to find different port numbers for Linux server applications such as ftp, web and printing etc...but do they use the exact same port numbers than Windows IIS?

I'm looking for software to run on a linux server that can be used to validate user access to my VB software? I've developed a program in Visual Basic and would like to distribute it be able to have the software check a linux server to see if the userid that is used to login to the software is both valid AND unique (to prevent duplicate logins). Any suggestion on what I can use? my VB application is a desktop application. The verification software would be on the server on the internet. The users could create their own password... What is the best client/server software for linux that can move files between servers? I'm looking for a good client/server solution to move large amounts of files from one directory to another between multiple servers. Sortof like a tunnel, files are placed in one directory and are moved to another directory on another server. I've looked into and tried NFS and found it to have too many problems. Anyone have any suggestions on other software? Ideally this software will also be able to 'mirror' files as opposed to 'moving' them.

Can I use a Linux Server as an Open Directory for XP? Let me put things simpler. I'm building a Linux server for a client, and the client wants to have 5 terminals running Windows XP. The way he wants his system to work is that when the XP user logs in. His complete user profile including desktop documents and any other files that are saved in his 'my documents area, are obtained from the server, yet saved locally for offline use. This is why he wants this system: If his computer disappears tomorrow, he can login from a new computer, and everything including the stupid little picture of his dog on his desktop will still be there on the new computer. This goes without saying, that if he saves something on c: separately, or on another partition it will be lost with the old computer. This is apparently native in Microsoft Server 2003, I just want to do this for free using open source software. Someone told me that you can use Samba to do this. how can i migrate a linux server (apache, mysql, bind, squid, postfix, etc) for a new machine? I want to migrate my linux server from an old machine to a new one. This server runs many services as mail, ftp, dns, proxy, database, web server, etc. It's an Ubuntu server 6.01 in both pcs, with grub. In the new machine i'm using RAID 1 by software with /boot - / - /var - swap. The old one has no RAID. Could i use RSync to do the job. I tried before by making a tar file with all my partitions and extract it in the new machine using an nfs share but the new machine can't boot after this. Any ideas?

Need hints for building a 6TB RAID5 Linux-Server!? Hi! I'm planning to build my own server with about 6TB storage in a RAID5 array. Lately i've read a lot about those things to inform myself but there are some things most people don't need but I am interested in. Some facts first though: - I plan to use Ubuntu-server with webmin - Software-Raid for my 6TB storage - Raid5 is OS-free --> Storage only - OS is on seperate disk in "onboard" RAID 1 - Server should run some simple programs or scripts like IRC-Bot - FreeNAS looks nice but can't run normal programs like IRC-Bot etc (right?) So now to my questions: - Should i use hdds with 5400 rpm or normal ones? it'll be 1 gbit network card only so i think 5400 is enough. And they need less power make less noise and last longer right? - What hardware should i use? Starting with a big enough casing to processing power and power source i got no clue what a pc like that needs. Since i'd like to use software RAID I don't want to spend money on RAID-Cards. - Eventually i'll run Xen on that thing. Nothing too fancy, just playing around a bit. What OS should i use? How to find linux full offline linux software? Ok, fairly dumb question, but im a student at JobCorp and i'm using Linux(OpenSuse-Gnome). I'm relatively new at using it, coming off from Windows-XP. how do you mount an iso image file to the cdrom in linux? I need to install software on a few servers in a linux vps hosting environment and i have the image file and need to mount it remotely. Does anyone know how to do this?

how to backup linux ubuntu server? Hi. We have a VOIP Server at the office and i cant figure out how i can back up it. The way i am thinking is using a program like Acronis® True Image Echo™ Server for Linux but it cost to dam much, need a free software or any other ways of backing up entire hdd or partion. I need to be able to backup the image onto a extrenal hdd and i wont mind getting my hands a little bit dirty with coding if needed or whatever. Thank You For Helping In Advance!

server software.? i'm trying to get my head round what i need to set up a server. I know about the scripting languages and databases at a later stage but the initial set is confusing me. e.g. could i put apache on a blank server and have it serve requests or do i need linux/unix to operate apache? good reading resources will be appreciated, not to heavy though :)

How can i design a network monitoring software in windows or Linux? The software has to be like a client/server model. The server should be able to find out the details of the network activities of the clients connected and authenticate and remove users from the network. I am familiar with C/C++, Java & Lisp. Why do dedicated server service prices vary so much? I'm trying to purchase a dedicated Linux server service (e.g. 2G Ram, 80GHDD Raid, Pentium 4 or above (not Celeron), online incremental backup, dual internet access, unmanaged service) with Red Hat 4. We will put our own software on it and remotely manage the server. I understand that SLAs differ but the price range is huge! So far £90pm to £260pm! There just doen't seem to be a market rate!

Need pointers to setting up A/V monitoring over WiFi of the basement playroom.? I am looking for a pointer to some instructions or personal experience that would assist me in setting up a system that I could use to monitor the kids in the play room. I have an extra laptop, wireless network, Linux experience. I can purchase probably a camera and microphone for the laptop. I imagine there are some instructions out there that recommend video and audio devices that are compatible with Linux and some sort of server software that would allow my wife and I to logon to that box from another computer in the house and pick up that a/v feed when we wanted to see and hear what was going on (floors and walls seem to well soundproofed in this new house). Keywords that I am using to search (Linux, monitor, Audio, Video, security) are of course coming up with the wrong stuff. There is a place I could put this and get two video feeds so that is desirable too. I would expect the Linux server to be able to stream something that Windows Media Player could use.
