How To Set Up A Linux Home Media Server? I have a P4 2.2ghz PC with a 300gb HD, and I want to install a distro of Linux that I can have connect to my home network so that I can have all my pictures and music on one computer, but be able to access them on my four Windows XP systems. I have very little previous experience with Linux. My network is wireless, but this computer will be wired to the router directly. I would like to have full access to these files, not just streaming capabilities, similar to the way you can share folders on the Windows Network.

What suggestions do you have for creating a Linux-based home server? I'm looking to build a Linux-based server for use at home. I'm not new with Linux, but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'm looking, in particular, for distribution, software, security, and configuration suggestions. I'd like the server to be able to do a number of things: *Private SMB/CIFS server for local network *Media server, for iTunes and Xbox 360 *FTP/Webserver, password-protected, accessible from internet. *Media center features (Maybe?) *Possibility for future expansion. Part of me wants to use Ubuntu or Fedora, for familiarity's sake, but perhaps there is a better option. Thanks!
Going to buy a home server. Linux vs Windows? I don't know much about servers but im buying one so i can access all of my files while im gone on Business. From what i have read you have to have it hooked up to a computer, is this correct? On my main computer i have Win7 with Norton and on my second i have Ubuntu and Debian. Im guessing Linux would be more secure but ive read its a pain getting set up. Would it be better to use it with Windows or Linux? Also do ISP block home servers? I think its port 80 or something.

Help with setting up a Linux server at home? I have a rather simple question about DNS that I can't find an answer for online. Simply put, what DNS address do I use when I configure my web server at home. Is it the DNS for my ISP, or the DNS to the one that I have set up through AnyDNS.com? Also do I use the IP for the DNS server or the "ns1.anydns.net" address. Thanks in advance.
How to setup Linux server using Linksys WRT54G router? I want to setup Linux CentOS 5.3 server from home and install everything needed to host a websites from home. I currently have dynamic IP but it stays the same as long as I do not unplug my cable modem for a long time. Is there a way to block or limit torrents on a home linux network server? Is there an easy way to block or limit torrent downloads on a linux network server? I've used Ubuntu on my personal computer and am thinking about setting up my old computer to be a file and network server. While doing so I would also like to solve a small issue I have. One of my roommates are always downloading torrents and using P2P networks. My only problem with this is that it slows down the internet when I need to get online. Is there an easy way to limit or block this so that everyone in the apartment can get online and not have to crawl from page to page? I'd also like the ability to block this in he event his downloading becomes an issue
What is a good Linux distro for a very small home server? I've got my Bachelors in Computer Science but I don't care for Linux and thus have a very hard time with it when I am using it. That said, I am getting a very small and low-end computer (I Ghz, I GB ram) that I plan to use as a basic FTP / DNS / HTTP / Minecraft server. Linux is clearly the best choice for such a computer. But my question is which distribution in the best? It needs to: Be simple enough to use. Have a GUI of some sort and be 100% functional with said GUI. Have a package manager for downloading from repositories Be very lightweight. I don't want the server taking too much power. I came across a few such as Vector Linux which is nice but I couldn't find a useful package manager built in so downloading programs was a nightmare. Xubuntu seemed OK but people are saying it isn't nearly as lightweight as it is advertised to be.
Best Linux Distro To Create Home Server (For SSH Proxy)? The question pretty much says it all. I'm looking for any FREE linux distro that would be the best for use as my home server. Please list which one, why, and what models it would be typically good for. The computer it will be installed on is a 2003 desktop computer. More specs cannot be provided at the time. The one who properly states the pros and cons, as well as gives his own personal opinion will be given the best answer. -Thanks If possible, could you please specify which version (ie Gusty Gibbon 7.10) and whether or not I have to get a specific "server" version of the distro. Thanks. Much thanks to deverybest. Your answer is good. Mind if I mail you with further questions?
How can I access my home server by the same IP or name? I need to access my linux server which is behind a router by the same name or IP, both inside and outside my network. (Clients are mac/linux/win). Is VPN the only solution for this? I've tried the router/dyndns solution... but if i ping the dyndns IP (my router's ip) from *within* my network, it doesn't forward; it stops at my router.
Home Web Server in Minnesota with static IP? I am thinking about setting up a linux home web server in Minnetonka, Minnesota. Does any one know of a high speed internet provider that gives you a static IP and allows you to have port 80 open? If anybody has succeeded at this with windows or with a dynamic IP in this area, I would also be interested in hearing about that, as well as general opinions of high speed providers in this area. I am open to either DSL or cable.
I am building a HTPC that will run Linux. How do I set it up as a home server? We have a very large family photo collection (300 GB and growing). I'd like to put this collection on the large hdd (1.5 TB) that I bought for the HTPC. I would like my wife (on a mac) and me (Windows 7) to be able to access the Linux machine at home over wifi in order to view/edit/organize the photos. It would also be nice if we could remotely access the HTPC from the web too. How do I set this up? Can someone give me a link to instructions that a home networking beginner can follow? We have a wifi router. The HTPC Linux machine will be connected by ethernet to the router and the mac and pc are wireless laptops. Any suggestions for a good Linux build for this job? Thanks!
How to host a website in my linux at home with a dynamtic IP? I just build a http server with Linux (PClinuxOS) at home. My ISP provides dynamics which means my IP changes all the time. I have a router which I have a service (3322.org) that keeps telling my holycow.3322.org what is my IP. I am giong to buy a .com and redirect to my holycow.3322.org. Is there anyway not letting people seeing the holycow.3322.org/xxxx when they use browser to see it? I wonder.
What software should I use on a home server? I am building a home server that I want to attempt to use as a router and for extra accessable storage from my desktops. Can I buy an inexpensive dns-only server for home? I want to attach a dns server to my network router. It will resolve local names, and forward anything else. I can set it up a server in linux, but I don't want a computer running all the time. I can set up fixed IPs, but I have many computers and interfaces. Most of the computers are linux.
Linux mail setup, spam and online / offline server question? Best mail setup question ... Scenario: - Have own domain name, lets call it abc.com for example. - Host 1: Have linux server at home on a xDSL connection running sendmail, which is not always connected to the net. Running fetchmail off this box to Host 2 to get mail for abc.com out of user1 pop account. /etc/aliases file used to hold many aliases for abc.com - Host 2: Linux server (linode) permantly connected to the net running qmail + spamassassin, and with a rule of *@abc.com to be dumped into a pop mail account user1. Primary MX for abc.com points to Host 2. Secondary & Tertiary MX's for abc.com point to a backup spool where domain is hosted. Problem: - As Host 2 has a all to one mail mapping for abc.com, all mail for any email address is accepted. - Spamassassin helps filter spam on Host 2, - Aliases file is on host 1 (so aliases can be added/deleted easily) Is there an easier way to setup mail ... can a backup mail spool with no timeout on host 2 be setup just for abc.com
How do I find out if I have a Linux Web Server or not? Checking the Properties of My Computer shows: System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I found out that I can have a Windows XP Operating System as well as a Linux Operating System but I don't know if this also determines my web server or not and how to determine whether I have a Linux Web Server or not. First: The reason why I need to find out this answer is that I was told in answer to another Yahoo question about how to install a redirect: "If you have a Linux Web server, then do this..." Secondly: Microsoft Help says "NOTE: Windows XP and Linux can coexist on the same computer. For additional information, refer to your Linux documentation." Well, I know I have windows. I don't know if I don't have Linux. One problem is that I don't know where to find my Linux documentation--isn't there some place on my computer where I should be able to look this data up?
advice on a home server? im looking for your input here i am completely open to suggestions the only limit is that it needs to be free software :) im looking to set up a home server my requirements are ... SSH server File server Print server Mail server i know that these can be accomplished with a Ubuntu Linux server but i am wondering if there are other, simpler methods of achieving these goals if you dont meet all four requirements thats fine 2/3 out of four would be good enough or if you have any suggestions for software that you run off ubuntu server then i would be open to these if i havnt already explored these all suggestions will be greatly appreciated sorry, well currently i use webmin on a ubuntu server, which is tedious to say the least hence im looking for simpler i know i can google this and find the answer but i want this from your own experience
What hardware/software do I need to make a secure IRC Server on a Linux platform? Right now I'm using a provider to host my IRC Server and I'm finding that their connectivity has holes, and their support is shotty at best. I'd like to be able to run the server from home once I get out of my DSL contract, but I'm a little unsure what all I need to make it secure and effective. Right now I'm considering using CentOS.

I want to set up a centralised network in my home using Ubuntu as the server, where do I start? I've got about 15 computers that I want to use on the network I want to use Ubuntu Linux as the server operating system. I currently have both desktop and server edition of Ubuntu. Some of the other computers use Windows Xp Pro, one is Win 98 SE and the rest are Linux RedHat or Ubuntu I want to have roaming login for all the computers, so, for example, you can log on to one computer, set your desktop background to your fav picture, then log off, log into a different machine and your background has followed you I know Ubuntu is powerful enough to handle it, but how do I set it up to control all of this?

Running shopping cart software on a home server.? I have an extra dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 2 GB DDR, dual SCSI server lying around that I would like to put to use as an ecommerce web server. What kind of things do I have to be careful about? I have limited linux knowledge but can do about anything I need to by looking up how to. I do not store credit card information on any of our servers or computers, this one won't be any different in that regard. I am interested in learning more about managing linux servers, and I though this would be a great way to do it. I currently have a dedicated IP and a 7m down / 512k up connection. I can easily upgrade to a 15/1 connection and even a 15/2 connection if I have to. How much traffic can a 512k up connection handle?
About to Create a Home Server... Suggestion for an OS? I have created multiple web sites before, but have always used 3rd party shared hosting. Recently, I created a new site, and as a learning experience, would like to host it not from a 3rd party hosting plan, but from home on a spare desktop. I'm planning on using Apache, and a Linux OS, as I already know how to use Apache, and would like to learn more about Linux-based OS's. So, any suggestions on what OS I should use? Thanks in advance!
What OS would make the best media center server? Have an older computer currently running Windows XP. Use it to play music on a stereo, and watch movies on a flat-screen tv. Also used as my home network server. Just wondering it there would be a better operating system I could use, either a better Windows (XP, home server, Vista) version, or a Linux version (Except Ubuntu, of course.) Ideas?

How do you set up a personal home server? Okay here is the thing. I used linnux for 2 years now. So i am familiar with it. I am planning to buy a cheap computer. a really cheap one to set it up as a data / media server. to be able to access it from my two laptops that i have at the moment. I have VIsta on one Laptop and Pclinnuxos on teh other laptop. I have 2 External drives filled with data and media. Now i am planning to buy this cheap computer and install linux OS (server edition) on it. so i can connect my two external drives on it and will be able to access them within my appartment and if i need you over the internet. How does it really work? I was looking at ubuntu server, or Pclinuxos Business edition, or any light weight distro that is reliable. Also can anyone provide me with step by step instructions on how to do it. I have alot of files and it frustrates me to go and grab my external everytime i wanna backup or access a file on it. Anyone? Please help.
How do you make a personal home server? I have windows on one computer and MAC OS X leopard on another computer. I am wanting to build a server on a spare windows computer. I also would like to be able to share internet from this computer. It currently has windows XP on it but i don't mind changing the operating system. I am new to Linux so I am looking for a step by step guide or an easy way to do this. What would be the easiest way?
How do I set up a VPN Tunnel between a Linux Server and my Cisco Router? I've got an ADSL line at my home that terminates to a Cisco 1721, and a collocated server at my place of business, which is running Ubuntu Linux Server 8.04. I would like to set up a private network (10.x.x.x) between the two locations for ease of sharing of files and media amongst my home LAN and the server. My guess would be to set up some sort of VPN between the server and the cisco, but I can't seem to figure out how. I realize that I can simply open a VPN connection from each client PC, but I think it's much better (and reduces overhead, 10 tunnels as opposed to 1) to actually set the VPN up at the router level, and just "ip route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 Tun0" or something. Can someone point em int he right direction as to how to set up a cisco-->server vpn? Encryption is not that important, a vanilla L2TP tunnel would suffice!
What linux distro makes a good game / file server? I'm going to be building a home server soon that will serve as both a filesharing server and a game server for LANs, and I'm having trouble deciding on an OS. FreeNAS looked good, but I don't think it'll run the majority of deticated game servers, and I don't want to shell out $100 for Windows Home Server (plus I could use the linux experience). It needs to: -Run, at the very least, the Source Dedicated Server tool in Steam, and hopefully the DS tools for other games. -Be able to share video files over a network using something similar to Windows Media Sharing, so that we can stream content onto our TV. -A web-based GUI for setup over another computer (like FreeNAS) would be nice, although I suppose we could just use a remote desktop tool. -Be able to use a built-in torrent program. If there are plug-in available for Windows Home Server that could allow use of all these things, I would be willing to bite the bullet and pay for WHS, but as I said, something in Linux would be great because I need the experience. Thanks for any help!
How can enable my server to send mail? I have a home server set up on a static ip running linux (Fedora) and it is accessible to the public. I just need to set it up primarily so that php scripts can send mail to emails as well as potentially later on setting up the server's own email. I do not have a domain name, only static IP. How do I do this?
How to make money from home server? Hi, I am currently on 3 mbps down and 1 mbps up DSL Biz class line and I have 4 static IP's with a router running pfsense with 1:1 NAT routing and I am going to setup a home windows server soon running a web server and other server software that doesn't use much bandwidth. I currently have a private linux server, but I wouldn't open that up to the public since I don't have much experience in linux, so I was wondering what is something that I could run on my home connection that maybe I could make $$ from a month? At least enough to pay for my internet bill. I can't host game servers and other server software like that because it uses to much bandwidth. Is there anything else out there that maybe I could get profit doing? I also own 1 domain.
What is the point of a home server? I've read this (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081210002829AAjyv3U) question but what if I'm not planning to create a domain or proxy? Can't you use a regular OS for file storage? That is what I am doing at the moment and it seems to work just fine so I was wondering what would be the advantage of a home server vs a regular OS and would linux or windows based be better? It will be for a very simple home server and it will be running on a netbook. There will be one desktop and one laptop connecting to it and occasionally a second desktop. The desktop that will be connecting to it very frequently runs vista and ubuntu dual-booted so what type of communication problems would there be between linux and windows?
How do I create a SSH tunnel from work to home? I'm using Linux on my home box. I want to SSH from work to home then have SSH server at home forward it off to my Windows Machine. That way I can RDP from work to my house in a nice secure tunnel. How do I do that?
Can a blade server run on its own without a rack? Hi I am trying to build a simple home server running on linux. So I was thinking about buying this refurbished blade server http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=VERARI-SERVER-4R&cat=SYS But now the question is -- Can this system run on its own without a server rack and other accessories that go with a blade server in a rack configuration Thanks
How can I sync the Linux system password and the Samba password? I have a Linux server to act as a file server for Windows clients. It is running Debian 3.1rc4 and Samba. I've created the users system accounts, their home folder, etc, all fine, and also the samba sharing system. I can connect to it and its running ok, but I would like to keep sync`ed the linux system user pass and the samba pass, so that when I change the SYS pwd, the Samba be updated automatically. I've read about it, mostly of people trying the oposite: when the Samba pwd gets changed, the sys its updated, but it seems to be a little more complicated, so the first case would be just fine. I also don't wanna turn the linux box into a PDC, or make a domain, using a central DB system for user management and do the job. Just want to keep the files sync without one of these DB solutions, keeping it as simple as possible. I think that's possible, but dont know if it is so simple, without creating a DB or using external tools. Thanks in advance.
i want to have a home server? it would have to run linux(ubuntu),vista pc's would connect to it.it would share music, files mostly, etc.cheap, how to i set it up,etc a xbox,2 or 3 computers,a linux and the rest vista's,it would have to have storage too.

proposal for a server build (Linux)? Im able to get hold of an emac for $20 and am thinking of using it as a server for a small home network. I would like to install a light linux distro on it. The setup would be: internet-> modem/router-> emac -> 4 port switch -> three machines (via rj45) Thoughts/comments? Will this work?

Is "TomTom Home server" a spyware? My GPS "TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes Edition" device has a buggy Linux touchscreen keyboard. The uppercase rules are completely nuts. The tools used or the programmer who wrote the software don't use an unique I/O keyboard module.. Each part of the program invents it's own "keyboard"..(References : LinuxVersion(311596) ApplicationVersionVersionNumber(8417) ApplicationVersion(1255)) So I use the laptop as a typewriter via that "Home" program which connects the device and the computer. Today the Internet connection was broken and this "wiring" program refused to start ! WHY ? IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN INTERNET CONNEXION, IT REFUSES TO WORK SAYING It can't connect to the "TomTom Home (spyware) server" SO, IF YOU ARE NOT TO INTERNET YOU DON'T HAVE THE KEYBOARD YOU NEED !! *********************************************************** I'm I Spyed from Internet by TomTom ? And Why ? *********************************************************** It's an ABUSE and MUST STOP! I BOUGHT AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE FROM THEM AND I DON'T WANT THEM TO KNOW WHERE I AM AND WHAT I'M TYPING OR DOING EACH MOMENT ! The European Comission, gave them the CE agreement. Should they withdraw that approval ? Am I spyed or not ?
How to Turn a Desktop PC into a Home Server ? I have a: 2002 Dell, Home edition. And I want to turn it into a sever for the family here. I have 3 OS on it right now. I have XP Home, Linspire, and I have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server Edition (installed today, never used). I don't want file sharing (I no how to do that ). If you no how I can do a server with one of the OS i have. Please help me. If need to install another OS I can Blow away the Partions no problem. I do no a lot about XP, and little about Vista. But Linux, don't no much. Thanks for the help I guess i am trying to turn it into a Media server and File server . Can you do both ?!?! zerox682... Its just something for fun . Its not for work or anything special. Just what ever I can get but maybe more of a File share, but if i can get a Media server to that would be great. Dave the computer guy - Are you just talking about windows 2000 or server 2000. But if i don't have that what else could I maybe use ?!?
Can someone explain licensing in server 2003? I'm no stranger to ms and linux servers but I've never installed on before, simply taken over what someone else has created if you get me. I plan to install server 2003 on my home network and would like someone to explain how the licensing for it works a little better. If the server has say 5 licenses does this mean 5 clients which are part of the domain can access the server but no more than that? Or does it mean something completely different? How do large companies with a seeminglessly unlimited number of clients deal with this? I remember in server 2000 there were two licensing options one was per client and I forget the other. I just need some better explanation really, it's not very clearly documented on the MS site so please don't paste whats already on there, ideally I want answers from someone whos used a ms server.
Best Linux / Unix Distribution for a Web server? Which Linux/Unix OS is best for hosting a web server? I am going to host my own website from my home, and i would like to use a Linux/Unix Operating system to do this. Or course it will be a L.A.M.P. server (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP)? Any Suggestions on which Linux/Unix OS is best to host a website?

I'm running desktop Linux on my home computer, and I would like to know of a program I could use to find out the operating system of a remote web server. Is this possible? I know that web servers have access to information about the operating systems of client machines that view their website, but does something similar happen in reverse? The protocol is HTTP.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005? And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field? I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon. Thanks.

Among the popular Operating Systems like Linux, Windows, Macintosh, Solaris etc what you have found to be most comfortable? Rank the Os according to you home using experience and servers. Building a Home Server( The software side)? So, I was just about to install Ubuntu 8.10 on my old computer just for kicks as I was wanting to learn about the Linux operating system, when I decided it would be best to just use this computer for a server, as it has alot of untapped power. I added a large terabyte hard drive and it has a beefy 8800 gt card. Anyway, I wanted to know what you all would( or already) use a home server for, and if you would use a flavor of linux, or a certain build of windows.
Replacing Microsoft Exchange with a Linux-based solution? I wish to access my business mails (actually on the exchange server) remotely - at home or somewhere else. Due to the fact that i'm not able to configure VPN on the actual server, I am thinking of replacing the exchange server with a linux based solution. Is it worth to do so please?
How to isolate an insecure computer (web server) from the rest of my home network? I would like to run a webserver (Apache/linux) on my home network but I know next to nothing about administering a webserver. I do not care much if the webserver gets hackers (this is more of a learning experience) but I do care if the rest of my network is compromised because of it. How can I best isolate the rest of my network from the insecure webserver? All I know to do is install a network switch before the router so I'm hoping you guys can give me some more advice. Thanks! XS suggests using only a NAT rule on the router. Will this protect from arp takeovers and mitm? It is that other 1% of access that I am concerned about... It is that other 1% of access that I am concerned about...
Can Microsoft see my whole network, and could they shutdown a linux box? I have heard that WGA can allow microsft to kill your computer remotely.(they have nearly shutdown my roomates XP system until he did a automatic update.we did not allow this update for two week until the computer was extremly slow) Does microsoft have the technologies to disable someones linux box? I fear a EULA disallowing someone from runing linux on the same home network that WinXP is hooked up to. They already put a 5 computer limit on your network(winxp pro has a 10 computer limit). How can they get away with telling you how many computers you can run?I talked with a microsoft rep and she told me that each computer does not have to be running a windows product and that there is a 5 computer limit per license on a single network. So if I put up a new web server my room mate would have to buy a second licence even thought Im not using a windows os.
How to disable locally stored roaming profiles? I have a small domain setup in my home (Linux controls it not Windows Server). Anyway, when a roaming profile is logged off and saved back to the server, is there a way to have it erase the locally stored profile of the roaming profile? XP Professional.

Setting up multiple Linux servers that can be controlled remotely from the internet? I currently have two Ubuntu Linux servers set up on my home network. One is a webserver and hosts my website and email; the other is a file and print server. My question is: how can I set these up so that I can use an SSH client (Like Putty) and an FTP client (Like WinSCP) to control or FTP to/from either one when I am away from home with an internet connection? Thanks in advance!

Information on setting up a mail server? I'm setting up a server in my home for a new business. I'm running SuSE Linux 10.1 and would like to know what I need to do to setup a mail server. The web server is no problem, but I don't know what's involved in hosting my own mail. How does another server know where to send mail? How does the server get it? Any good and informative sites and links would also be appreciated. --Dee
