How To Set Up A Linux Home Media Server? I have a P4 2.2ghz PC with a 300gb HD, and I want to install a distro of Linux that I can have connect to my home network so that I can have all my pictures and music on one computer, but be able to access them on my four Windows XP systems. I have very little previous experience with Linux. My network is wireless, but this computer will be wired to the router directly. I would like to have full access to these files, not just streaming capabilities, similar to the way you can share folders on the Windows Network.
Can a file and media server be created in a Linux system? I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 and I wish to create a file and media server on it. I've used Samba for the file server part. What about for the media part? Can it be done? Can it be in the same desktop or does it has to be on two? Which media server software is the most compatible with an Ubuntu file server?
DLNA Media Server for Ubuntu/Linux Mint? I currently stream my videos from my Windows 7 computer to my Xbox 360 via TVersity. But I have a laptop running Linux Mint (fantastic Ubuntu variant) that I'd also like to stream media from. Is there any DLNA compatible media streamers for Linux that I can use? Preferably something that loads up in the background on startup so I don't have to manually start it whenever I want stream something.
best linux file permissions for other users (media server)? Hi, I have all my music, pictures, and videos in a folder /mnt/6/media/ How do i set this up so i can make user accounts that can browse the contents, open the contents, copy to their computer, but not delete? I am afraid if i give a few roomates access someone will accidently delete. This is a linux system. Am i correct in assuming the following? User: bob is default in wheel group and secondary in ftp. randy owns /mnt/6/ Any additional users should be put in the FTP group and /mnt/6/ and recurssive files should all be set to 755? This gives bob (the owner) ability to write, delete, etc, and additional users in the FTP group to read and play the content but not delete? Thanks for clarifying.
Linux Server Distros? I need a good, free distribution of a Linux server for a small media server to be connected to my Windows 7 PC and my vista. any good FREE distros?
What is a good alternative to ASP if you are on a linux server? I want to upload files from the website and attach visitor's informtation to that media file. If I had the site on a window's server, I would use ASP, but my client wants to use a linux server.
Best value server hardware for medium scale website running on Linux? What do you suggest? Dell, HP, IBM, Sun... it is my knowledge that IBM provides the best server running on linux? Or is it the best idea to buy used hardware equipments? Or what about building a few boxes from scratch? This website will run on Linux and will run a medium scale dynamic website with server-side language. thanks experts @ Y! Answers!
What OS would make the best media center server? Have an older computer currently running Windows XP. Use it to play music on a stereo, and watch movies on a flat-screen tv. Also used as my home network server. Just wondering it there would be a better operating system I could use, either a better Windows (XP, home server, Vista) version, or a Linux version (Except Ubuntu, of course.) Ideas?
I want to make a media server for my home. What is the best open source app? How would I go about doing this? I was thinking this would be a good way to learn Linux. What would be the best approach for this?

Any programs that stream media for Linux(Ubuntu)? I have a PC which is running Linux(Ubuntu) and I want to stream the media from my PC to my PS3. Is there any programs( that are free :) ) that act as media servers that will work on my PC.
What suggestions do you have for creating a Linux-based home server? I'm looking to build a Linux-based server for use at home. I'm not new with Linux, but I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'm looking, in particular, for distribution, software, security, and configuration suggestions. I'd like the server to be able to do a number of things: *Private SMB/CIFS server for local network *Media server, for iTunes and Xbox 360 *FTP/Webserver, password-protected, accessible from internet. *Media center features (Maybe?) *Possibility for future expansion. Part of me wants to use Ubuntu or Fedora, for familiarity's sake, but perhaps there is a better option. Thanks!
How To: Windows Based Media Server? I need to setup a media server. The system I am using has a motherboard that has known Linux compatibility issues (in other words; Linux is NOT an option, unfortunately). I only need to stream music. Of course, MS wants me to buy Server 2003. Hold on while I check my pocket. No, I don't $5G. Oh, but I do have that copy I found on the sidewalk. But I'd rather use my legal XP (currently installed) to do it. I currently have HTTP and FTP servers setup. Need advice on configuring media server on XP. This is an internal company server and only has to work on MS boxes. Thanx in advance.
I have Pentium 4 computer with Windows XP Home on it. I want to turn this into fileserver and media server? I want to be able to do several things. Have this computer act as a server for files, be able to play hulu.com (more of a PC than server I guess), backup my two networked PCs, and stream to my PS3. What OS would be best suited for this? Can XP Home do this? Or should I go with Ubuntu or some other Linux? Main thing is file serving and backups. Thanks.
Best Linux distro for use as a server? My friend has an old computer with a 996MHz Processor with 128MB of RAM, and 6GB+90GB hard drives. He wants to use it as a personal server for storing his music, movies, etc. He also needs it to be able to stream videos to his xBox 360. I was thinking a Linux Distro would be best, due to the low specs. Which distro is the best (fastest, most reliable) to use for media storage and streaming?
How do I set up a VPN Tunnel between a Linux Server and my Cisco Router? I've got an ADSL line at my home that terminates to a Cisco 1721, and a collocated server at my place of business, which is running Ubuntu Linux Server 8.04. I would like to set up a private network (10.x.x.x) between the two locations for ease of sharing of files and media amongst my home LAN and the server. My guess would be to set up some sort of VPN between the server and the cisco, but I can't seem to figure out how. I realize that I can simply open a VPN connection from each client PC, but I think it's much better (and reduces overhead, 10 tunnels as opposed to 1) to actually set the VPN up at the router level, and just "ip route 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 Tun0" or something. Can someone point em int he right direction as to how to set up a cisco-->server vpn? Encryption is not that important, a vanilla L2TP tunnel would suffice!
Why does Linux suckss so bad when it comes to play media? I just got Ubuntu 9. Very nice. I tried to play a movie using Totem, It won't work, I updated all the codecs NADA!! Then I downloaded MPlayer supposely stable. It does not run the media!! No error but just won't play my movie. Finally I got VLC Player , It plays the movie but the picture is HOORIBLE. My question is WHEN!! Linux will start to have stable media?? Linux folks ALWAYS criticise Windows etc.. But Linux seems to be stable for 1 thing DATABASE & SERVER!! But sorry when it comes to games , media , musics they are 100 years behind Windows. However I am going to keep Ubuntu 9 as the ONLY reason I downloaded was to use LAMP but I was hoping to witness some improvements from the last version I tried 2 years ago Ubuntu 7.
Which flavour of linux is best for PS3? I have a media server running Media Tomb (which is great!). However the PS3 only supports a limited number of file formats. I was wandering if it was possible to install Linux on the PS3 and have it recognise the media server and give me the ability to add the appropriate codecs so that I can play the troublesome files?
What are the benefits of changing my OS to linux yellow dog on my PS 3? I really dont have a clue about this, i ve only had my ps3 two weeks and have just about managed to get my media servers from ps3 pickin up my laptop and desktop, but i hear all about this linux yellow dog, what the hell is it, what does it do, and what are the benefits of using it (and disadvantages). HELLLPPP! Thnkin you in advance!
Why does Media Player on Windows Vista, take FOREVER to add files to the playlist that are on the network? First I just want to say I am well versed in networking, and computers in general. My job is being wholly responsible for maintaining a network of 30+ PC's, 3 linux servers, and 130+ dumb terminals. I just want to make it clear that, though I may not be a computer genius, I for sure know what I am doing, when it comes to home networking. I just installed Vista on one of my PC's. I have a PC (Win XP) on my network that shares all my media files. With previous versions of windows like XP or even Win2k, I have NEVER had a problem like this. I have the drives on the data server mapped on the Vista box. So lets say I navigate to the album I want. And drag the 12 or so tracks to the playlist in media player. Media player stops responding for literally 30-60 seconds until it finaly shows the songs on the list. 2-3 albums and I give up waiting after 2-3 minutes. The data is on a defragged SATA 2 drive. The PC's are the only 2 on a 100Mbps network. WHY is it doing this? BTW: IT'S NOT BECAUSE MY COMPUTER CANT HANDLE VISTA. The PC with Vista has a AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ 2.0Ghz CPU, 1GB RAM - 250GB SATA2 hard drive. It handles everything that actually uses resources just fine. I have all the visual stuff active, and it runs nice and smooth. ALSO -- if I watch the CPU meter while media player is all frozen, it's just sitting at 2-3%. There isn't an large network activity, and the RAM usage doesnt seem to change, so I'm not understanding where it is bottle necking. BTW -- I also disabled everything I could find that might take time when adding files. Like adding files to library when played -- getting additional info off of the internet etc. Also - in case it make any difference, I have the 64 bit version of Vista installed.
what is the linux command line for displaying a website? I'm using Gentoo linux and am a complete newbie. Just got the hang of emerge and moving round the directories. Anyway I've installed media tomb to turn the box in to a media server and I want to check out the web interface via Putty at work. I've seen others use a prompt that can display webpages (albeit without graphics) via the command line. Anyone know how to do this? Cheers
What's the cheapest intel processor/motherboard you would suggest for a linux MMC? I am planning the parts I need to build a media server to store my music and movies. I am budgeting right now, and would prefer to spend as much money as I can on storage space and a high end video card and audio card. Am I wrong in assuming this doesn't need the high end 8 core whatever most expensive processor out there? Unless someone has a compelling reason to go with AMD, I am looking at intels.
Media Server Ideas for my old computer? I just bought a new computer. I want to put my old one next to my HDTV so that I can connect my pc to the vga input to watch hd movies on there. I would want to run it as a server when I am not using it though, so that means I would have to control it through remote desktop or something. I am thinking about an FTP file server for my private use. I just need some extra ideas, links to websites would be helpfull. Should I run linux (ubuntu) or should I run windows xp pro, thats all I have. What kind of things can I do that is not that hard, something for profit. Thanks.
Setting up a pc server to host media files for my mac? So i have an old PC that I want to convert into a file share server. I would like to store my music and videos on this server, and access them on my macbook. So here are the questions What is the best server software to use? MS server or Linux? Is there a way for my mac to view this as an external drive, so it will work with my Itunes? Can I plug in other USB devices into the server like my tv tuner so i can control it from my mac?
What is the difference between Windows OS vs Windows Server OS ? What is the difference between Windows OS and Windows Server OS in: 1) General terms ( Speed,Compatibility, etc.) 2) Daily use ( Games and Media ) 3) Use as an OS for the Apache server (Upload speed, respond to requests, etc.) ? P.S is it worth using a Windows server instead of Linux if you are just going to use Apache instead of IIS ?

Need help with the Linux distro for a music and video Jukebox? Hi, I´m have a lot of experience with MS operating system, since DOS 3.0, but I´m a newbie in Linux. I need some recommendation for the Linux distro and the packages to use for using a old 400 mhz with 128 RAM that I will transform in a Music and video Jukebox. I will use a standard touchscreen lcd, and a regular hard drive, maybe around 20 gigs. I like to use it also as a media server, with a wireless card, in case I install other Multimedia devices, like a 360. but that is not necessary. also i don´t need to play dvds on it, only regular divx and mpeg files, maybe some rmvb i have. also i like to have a simple interface, in the same lines as this: http://www.virtualmusicjukebox.com/ thanks for any answer
How to use Windows Server 2008 as a home media center? I have some experience with Windows Server 2008. How practical is it to use it as a home server? Anyone out there that has experience of setting it up at home? I would like to have all my media files stored in a single location and be able to access the from different computers over a wireless network. I know about the possibility of using Windows Home Server, which is probably more user-friendly, but I already own a copy of Server 2008 so it would make sense to use what I have. I am also aware of the availability of the free Linux OS but I rather stick with Windows for now.
What linux distro makes a good game / file server? I'm going to be building a home server soon that will serve as both a filesharing server and a game server for LANs, and I'm having trouble deciding on an OS. FreeNAS looked good, but I don't think it'll run the majority of deticated game servers, and I don't want to shell out $100 for Windows Home Server (plus I could use the linux experience). It needs to: -Run, at the very least, the Source Dedicated Server tool in Steam, and hopefully the DS tools for other games. -Be able to share video files over a network using something similar to Windows Media Sharing, so that we can stream content onto our TV. -A web-based GUI for setup over another computer (like FreeNAS) would be nice, although I suppose we could just use a remote desktop tool. -Be able to use a built-in torrent program. If there are plug-in available for Windows Home Server that could allow use of all these things, I would be willing to bite the bullet and pay for WHS, but as I said, something in Linux would be great because I need the experience. Thanks for any help!
why are there so many linux fanbois on yahoo? seriously i tried it on my media server and had nothin but compatibility problems (drivers, network problems) also games dont work ive got vista 32 sp1 and have had no .. yes thats right NO problems whatsoever its quick , it never crashes it is compatible with every program and driver i have thrown at it
What to do with a server blade? So the company I'm working for is going down the hole, and my boss is practically giving away all the crap in the office, first thing I got was this: http://www.nextdaypc.com/main/products/details.aspx?PID=A255655&rsmainid=ND0130014 I figured, it will probably be a usable computer at home, so I took it ... Now, I'm stuck with this, I don't even know what to do with it... LOL! It has windows 2008 server OS, but I want to put linux ubuntu... not really a techy guy, but i wanna use this as my media server at home... If you had a chance to get one of these babies, what would you do with it?
What's a good remote administration program for debian linux 64-bit? I have 2 debian linux computers. One is a media pc server that's hooked up to a bigscreen. The other is my laptop. I want to be able to control the server from my laptop over a network, so when i point and click it on my laptop, it will start a movie (or whatever) on the media pc. I installed VNC but it seems to only let you login as a seperate session... so im kinda stuck. Any help? It's not that I have a 'morbid fear' of the command prompt, I just don't want to have to take the time to learn commands for something as simple as turning the volume up and down, or making a video fullscreen... it just makes more sense for it to be graphical to me.

Windows Home Server or Windows 7? I have a computer that I set up to be a media server. I purchased and installed windows 7. Now I am having problems keeping everything networked together because some of the computers have windows XP installed. I can get it to network, but after a day or so, the network will fail. When I try to connect the xp machine over the network to the windows 7, it will say that I do not have proper permissions. Even though I connected 6 hours ago with no problem. So, sense it could be the operating system, I figure I can purchase and install windows home server operating server. Now here is part of the question, Should I do this? Should I go from windows 7 Pro, to WHS? I tried to get linux to install, but had so many issues because my computer is set with raid 1+0 and got so tired of getting everything to work, I broke down and went with windows 7. FYI, Getting Ubutnu to work with Raid 1+0 will make you want to commit suicide. Here is what the network looks like Cysco small buisness gigabit wired router to 3 windows 7 computers, and one xbox360. Engenius Outdoor wireless router connecting 3 xp computers. Best network to work with above, and the different operating systems that will also recognize and work with Raid 1+0 with a Gigabit onboard Raid hardware controller. I looked to see if the router is being exploited, and I asked two of my buds to hack my network. The port scans shows non of them are showing open, and my router has upgraded firmware. All userids and passwords are not default, and using alpha numeric passwords. Well, It will have a wire connection, the outdoor router is acting as a switch, The router connects to the wired router and bridges the network together. So, It does technically have a wired connection.
Need help with decision to buy or build media player? I have a Ubuntu Linux box setup as a file server in my home office. I use some of this space to store avi files which is shared using Samba. I can then access these files using my Windows Media Center in the den and through an XBox in the living room. I want to put another media player in the bedroom but I don't want a clunky XBox or full PC hooked up to the bedroom TV. Plus, I don't want to spend a fortune. I've looked at the D-Link MediaLounge (DSM-520), but I don't think this streams media from a Samba share, only from another Media PC. But, I like the look of this device. Can someone give me suggestions on similar products or a cheap way to build my own. Thanks!
Which operating system is best suited for a programmer? I am a programmer who uses C++, C#, .NET, actionscript 3.0, php, etc, etc. the impression I have gotten is that pc is best for business, Mac good for media and linux good for server use, which would be the best platform for developing web/desktop/database type of stuffz? Ive been using pc for a while now, and there so many alternatives thanks to the open source community for doing .NET stuffz, or flash stuffz on other platforms, but which one is the best to do it all on?
How can I change my 300GB NAS Maxtor drive for a larger one? I have Maxtor 300GB NAS drive on my home network. I want to increase its size. USB HDD only allow view only, and are not included in the media server. Tried taking HDD out of Maxtor, plugging in as secondary drive on PC. HDD is not recognised (presume it's Linux or similar). Want to create an image of the original drive using Ghost so that I can put that onto a larger HDD and install into NAS.
How to stream live video for Web page? I am interested in streaming live video to my Web page for viewing. What needs to be done to make this happen? Can an independent cable TV station somehow film the event and upload the feed to my ISPs (Network Solution) Linux server? I also wanted to have the video embedded (240 x 201 pixels) in my Web page, similar to the process of YouTube and embedding video on one's Web page page. I thought about having someone video tape the event, save it to a video file for viewers to download, but was concerned the file would be choppy during playback. Plus, it would take a long time to download. The event would be about an hour in length. If end-user downloading is the preferred option, what is the best format to use for quality a low band width...Windows Media File, Quicktime or Real Media?
What should I do with my Linux box? I have a second computer. It's 1.8 GHz Athlon with 80 GB and 512 MB of RAM. It's running Ubuntu 7.10. I have no use for it. What should I do with it? Turn it into a media drive? Use it to constantly download stuff? Dedicate it as a server? Any ideas?
One Last Linux/WINE Question...Please? OK, I am trying to set up a dedicated media server. I need to run many different formats of video, because I collect subtitled non0import anime (among other Japanese films). The players I need are Media Player Classic (CCCP), GOM Player, VLC Player KM Player...and a few others. I have audio in standard mp3, as well as FLAC and APE, so I need to run Foobar2000, Winamp, etc. I would also need to power either an 8800GT or 8800GS video card and an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card. Is there hope for me on this...or am I doomed to Vista? Thanks again. 16K: I need all of these players because fansubs are VERY particular. Some will only run on one player. I know it sounds odd, but it is true. Thanks for the info. Also, no specific reason for Vista. Three of my boxes run XP, but my main computer runs Vista and it would be a major pain to change back to XP.
Which operating system is more taxing on a system, ubuntu or windows xp? I am building an htpc for use as a divx player (off a hard drive), media storage server and pvr. I have heard that Linux is much to better to use on a low end system. It seems that the most user friendly version out there is ubuntu or kubuntu, but the requirements are 256mb of ram which is the same as xp. I have a legal copy of xp that I can install and am wondering if I am better of sticking with that. I have a older socket 370 mobo that I am using for now (733 celeron) that I will probably upgrade to something over 3Ghz within a year. I don't plan on using it as a gaming machine, but I have read that Linux has very little commercial game support.
Need pointers to setting up A/V monitoring over WiFi of the basement playroom.? I am looking for a pointer to some instructions or personal experience that would assist me in setting up a system that I could use to monitor the kids in the play room. I have an extra laptop, wireless network, Linux experience. I can purchase probably a camera and microphone for the laptop. I imagine there are some instructions out there that recommend video and audio devices that are compatible with Linux and some sort of server software that would allow my wife and I to logon to that box from another computer in the house and pick up that a/v feed when we wanted to see and hear what was going on (floors and walls seem to well soundproofed in this new house). Keywords that I am using to search (Linux, monitor, Audio, Video, security) are of course coming up with the wrong stuff. There is a place I could put this and get two video feeds so that is desirable too. I would expect the Linux server to be able to stream something that Windows Media Player could use.
Creating a home File server...? I have a windows xp media center computer. I would like to be able to do two things with it. 1. I want to use it's hard drive to create a file server so I can access large files that can not be stored online on sites like dropbox. 2. I would like to be able to remotely control it with my ipad or Mac, but that is not as important to me as the file server. Note: if Linux would work better, I would be fine switching it over. The computer currently is in a spare room for storage so any changes are welcome.
What can I do with my old laptop and how? I have an old laptop with 30 mb ram and 6 gb hard drive running a pentium iii and no ethernet card. I installed linux onto it and am looking to make it either into a small server, a dvr, or a media center for my apartment. What kinds of upgrades do I need to make and/or do you have any better ideas?
Wikipedia Installation for creating online reference library and a forum.? OS : Windows XP Media Center with SP2 Web Server: IIS 5.1 My purpose is to install and use wikipedia as a base for my colloborative online consultancy website. I have downloaded wikipedia latest and PHP 5.x latest recently. I donot know whether my PHP installation is successful or not. I could be able to open http://localhost from IE 5.1, but not in Mozilla FireFox after installing it. I need to confirm PHP installation before proceeding to wikipedia installation. I have already completed wikipedia installation as per procedure. But nothing seems to happenning. I also require some resources to start a feature like Yahoo!Answers (but not RSS Feeds please) and also a online library for reference, a forum, on linux server. I thought wikipedia is a better platform, but open to other solutions also.
Issue with Debian after downloading and installing VLC media player packages? I run a Home server using Debian, and have been using it as a backup server and using it to host a voice server. I wanted to try streaming music/video so I can enjoy music at remote locations, and I have used VLC media player before, but never on Linux. I located the VLC media player package on the Synaptics Package manger, and told it to download it along with the other additional packages, and it said it had to remove some old packages and incompatible ones as well, so I said go ahead. Well, the screen blanked out at some point during the installation process, so i rebooted the server. Now it will go thru the whole loading process, and where it is supposed to prompt me to log in, it gives me a grey background and my cursor, which does react, but nothing else happens, and the activity light on the server does not flash. I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I would enjoy being able to log back into my server XD I have some knowledge of how to use and work with Linux, but only from what I have read and messed around with. I would really appreciate if someone could help me out, Thanks! ^_^
Is Linux for me? Sorry, I know there's a thousand linux vs. windows questions out there, but I am still not sure if it is appropriate for my needs. I'm used to Windows, but have some programming knowledge and understand quite a bit about computers. I'll probably always keep Windows (in a dual-boot configuration), at least for games (which I really don't play that much). What I do use my system for is a media file server, that I access throughout my house wirelessly to play music and videos. I use MediaPortal to interface with my server through my TV, and programs like helium music manager and mediamonkey to manage my music collection. Since I'm using my system primarily as a server, would there be noticeable performance improvements over using Windows? If I used mediaportal and mediamonkey, I would probably have to run those through windows emulation software, so that would negate any performance improvements, correct? I'm willing to learn and tinker with linux, but only if its worth it. Thanks for the replies so far. Mediaportal is just software that is specifically made for TV screens that allows you to interface with your computer. The thing is, this is all well-established by me (lots of time tinkering and database management), I wouldn't want to have to switch completely to a new program. So... I would probably have to run it through a windows emulator. So, if I do this, will I still receive the performance perks, or would it function just like it does in regular windows. I won't mind spending the time setting linux up with device drivers and all of that pain in the !@# stuff if it actually pays off. But I would hate to go through all of that trouble just to add another layer of complexity to my system. Thanks guys
Will I regret switching from Debian Linux to Freebsd? I run a server for a medium sized publishing company and want more stability. I'd also use it as my desktop office OS.

Is Linux a good programming envoriment? I am going to dual my computer with Windows XP and Fedora my reasoning is to keep Windows for all my Gaming needs, media, music, ect. And to install Fedora for all programming and work related needs. Like scripting, setting up a test server, programming, doing work related stuff, and just learning how to use Linux just in case I need it for a job. Would that be a smart thing to do or should I just dump it all on Windows XP and stick with that?
Home server file system? Hi, I want to build a home server out of spare parts for extra storage and media streaming etc, was thinking of using a Linux distro as the OS. I want to be able to read and write to it from a Mac and Windows so i'm not sure how to format the drive? Mac has issues with NTFS, I've heard there's some software out there like Macfuse that might help me. But then there's FAT32 which both can write to but i believe can only hold files 4gb or less?
Linux Help Needed? How do I make a streaming server with VLC Media Player or XMMS Music Player?? Please make explinations so simple that a baby would understand. Thanks :D NOTE: I HAVE USED DOCS FROM BOTH AND THEY DON'T HELP ME!!!

Ubuntu 9.04 Server or Windows Server 2k3? I am going to build a media center in the next week or two. I will be using Ubuntu as the OS and XMBC as the media center (for the front end). All my media will be hosted out of a central server at my home and I plan to stream all my files to the XBMC. I do have some experience with linux, and I am comfortable with the command line and doing my own research. My questions, is there really any benefit to using a Ubuntu server over Windows? I know that if I went the Windows 2K3 route it would be much easier to set up. Assuming cost isn't an issue for the OS. Is there a reason I should lean towards one OS over the other. I do like the fact that the Ubuntu would be a little less resource intensive, but do the additional pains in setting it up justify using it? The hardware I plan on using is a little old. Dual P3 550mhz, 1 gig ram, lots of HDs.

Is there any use for my 360 without the original drive and no key? Are there any mod chips available to allow me to use any sata dvd drive and install Linux or something of that nature? A chip to unlock Microsoft's lock downs so as to use it as a standard computer? I have a ps3 now and love it, and I have a 360 that no longer has the original drive got a replacement and had the key backed up but lost the thumb drive I backed it up to. I would really like it, if possible, to install Linux on the 360 and setup a media server on it for the ps3. I can certainly solder and know my way around Linux. There's just so many modchips out there I'm not sure which one if any will accomplish what I want. Can anyone help?

How to "wake up" an XP PC by accessing UPNP or Lan share? Hello! I have a computer in my house, which I am using as a centralized storage, and a UPNP media server (TVersity Pro). I want to configure it in such a way, that when another computer on lan wants to access a shared folder, or the TVersity upnp server, it would wake itself up, should it be in sleep mode. The computer in question (the server) is a P4 machine with 768mb of ram. 32bit. Any suggestions? I have researched Wake on Lan, but am reluctant to try it, as it seems like a fairly complicated setup for such a task. The computer which is running the media server and the centralized storage is running Windows XP Pro. Other computers are a mix of XP Pro, XP home, XP MCE, and Windows 7. Currently I have no PC's running Vista, but it's an option always at hand. Would be nice if it worked with a Linux box too. I have no Macs. If it's of any matter, my network is mostly wired, though the solution must work with wireless too. I'm running a Linksys Router with Tomato firmware, and a switch (or hub, I forget, whichever is 'smarter'). 100Mb. I have no Gigabit connections
How can I make my XBOX 360 recognize my WD MyBook World edition 500 GB NAS hard drive.? I am trying to use my MyBook as a media server the way I use my pc's on my xbox 360. I understand that the MyBook isn't a Upnp server but I do know that there is a a few ways to make it one. I am not Linux savvy, thought I am very computer literate. I know the MyBook's code is in Linux but I am wondering is there a easy way to make the hard drive Upnp capable? All help would be greatly appreciated... Thanks
How to record flash videos online? Hi, I am developing a networking website for my collegemates. Where in they can record their voice or their video profile online live in my website and upload. Using webcams and microphones. I wanted a simple and reasonably priced solution as this for private and non-commericial use among our college. When i looked around i found in www.aff.com , they have this same system wherein once we register for free, we can also record our video or audio profiles and upload. So, i wanted to develop something similar to that wherein you can put in your profile, your photos, audio & video profiles, all in flash. Also i wanted to know if there is any freeware software which can convert any media files like mpeg, avi, wma into flash and then posted into the website as well. This will be useful if the internet connection isn't fast enought for online recording in the case above. My hosting server is a shared php based Linux server with other default stuff, let me know if have to add-in any other linux application.A handsome tip if the answer is in detail and precise.

Is it possible to have two independent displays from a single computer? Basically, what I'm thinking of is a single computer running two separate desktops. This is the scenario I'm imagining: A media center PC is attached to a flatscreen display (with a wireless keyboard/mouse), and to a monitor/keyboard/mouse. The PC is able to serve media through the flatscreen (eg, music and movies), and able to surf the Internet/chat/do normal PC stuff on the other display. The two displays are able to act independently of each other. It's kind of similar to a "dumb terminal" concept (ie, a dumb terminal connected to a "smart" server) that used to be big in workplaces before the cost of the hardware came down. I'm sure it's possible with Linux and the X Window System, but I'd be more interested in a Windows implementation (though I'd be grateful for any Linux/X Window System implementation information ;)
I'm having a problem with setting up network? I have a desk top PC running XP home edition SP2 and there is now two laptops running XP media centre. The two laptops can access shared folders between each other and the desktop can acess shared folders on the two laptops. The laptops however cannot access the shared folders on the desktop. When I go in to view workgroup compuers the desktop is listed but when I try to open it I get an error saying I don't have access. Have checked everything I can think of on desktop and all the permssions seem OK. Anyone have any ideas, the only thing I can think of is pro/mce is not compatible in this way with home edition which would not be helpful. Is this fixable or should I just install an FTP server on the desktop pc and use that. Have also considered ditching windows and using linux as a samba server ut find it impossible to get wireless networking working on that. If I connect the desktop to my router via a cable it works. Seems to be a problem with the wireless network connection.

Is cloud computing like clustering? i plan on making a Linux cluster ( for media purposes) using a couple of spare computers i have. I really wanna use ubuntu (since most of the the packages im using are .deb and im used to the bash) for the cluster. I just looked on the ubuntu server web page info and it says i can use cloud computing. SOO to make a long story short is cloud computing like clustering?
Beowulf cluster...? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf_cluster Since I figured out that my major was going to be computer programming rather than networking or anything else, I've ALWAYS been curious about something. I've always wanted to be able to set up a Beowulf Cluster, but I've never had enough machines to do it. I now have some old junk machines at the house with like 8 hard drives in them total, and since the interface for the hard drives is IDE and not SATA, I don’t really want to get an adapter, ect. Anyway can someone tell me what their experience was setting up a Beowulf cluster? What amount of experience with Linux/Unix should you have (I currently have none), what are some good home applications? Such as creating your own cheap stand alone server, streaming media, ect. Hari R, thank you for a very good answer.

Network connection help? Ok here are the symptoms of my problem: Only Internet Explorer can connect to Internet, along with Windows Media player, Zonealarm, AVG, (not spybot) and some games (like Halo) connect to any server I try to connect to. Applications like iTunes, Firefox, and a lot of other ones cannot access any server i connect to. I tried opening and playing with ports, configuring with as many windows settings as i could to fix this problem. And zonealarm doesn't block them. When I'm in linux on the same computer firefox runs without a problem as well as every other program. It seemed like a easy problem to fix at first but now I'm lost. My real question is what are the possible issues that can cause connection problems like this, and how can they be resolved? Its not the windows firewall because otes been off because i use zonealarm Its not the windows firewall because otes been off because i use zonealarm. even though it was like that before i turned it off for zonealarm.

If Microsoft Bought Yahoo!? What would be a good Instant Messenger Network to use? I don't use any Microsoft products at home and don't want to ever again. I use PCs with Linux and Macs and they are completely Microsoft free from web browsers to media players. So if MS owned Yahoo, I don't want to connect to the Yahoo servers anymore. So what decent/good non-Microsoft alternatives are there? Is ICQ any good? Also, what's a good non-Microsoft alternative to Flickr too?
