Why should I choose SuSE Linux Enterprise Server over OpenSuSE? My goal is to run an efficient server that includes a webserver, email server, MySQL server, and other stuff like HylaFax and Asterisk. The traffic of the server is going to be pretty heavy, but I do not need fancy graphics because I am going to run it in text mode. I need the server to be highly reliable and secure. Trouble in Installing Redhat Linux Enterprise Server 4 AS on Acer Aspire 5004 Laptop? I bought a Acer Aspire 5004 NWLMI. Windows XP Professional is already installed. I downloaded the RHEL 4(AS) from a torrent site. I then burned the image to the cd using Nero 7. And when i boot the using the CD, the following things happen (the problem is the last thing) 1. it show ISO Linux 2.xx and boots the system 2. Then it show Redhat Enterprise Linux - To Install or Upgrade in graphical mode, press enter key -............... 3. I chose the enter key 4. Then it says loading vmlinuz............ Loading initrd.img........................... Then it detects all hardware and harddisk....(All the harddisk and the dvd drive is detected.) 5. Then it continues to the last stage saying loading /sbin/install running installer loading /sbin/loader after that the screen turns black the system stops responding...... There is no harddisk activity nor cd activity in the system. What should i do? i tried booting the system using linux dd, linux noprobe.... but the same result... Please help

We have just purchased a dedicated server from fasthosts, running Linux Redhat Enterprise 5, however our script needs PHP 5.2.0 and the version installed is 5.1.6 - Can anyone tell us how to upgrade this, i have found various things online but none seem to work. What is the difference of OpenSuse Linux 11 and Suse Enterprise Server 10? OK, I am truely fed up with so many ... perhaps too many Linux versions. I have made my mind to go with Suse Family. Final question remains. What is the BIG difference in performance, ease of use, and all other critical things between OpenSuse 11 and Suse Enterprise Server 10 or 11 (the coming one). Please do not answer that OpenSuse is for Beta Testing while Suse Server is stable version. Can anyone assure that SuSe Enterprise will be MUCH less buggy than OpenSuse? How to restore forgotten password in Linux Suse Enterprise Desktop? Hey, So I've bought yesterday a computer and today I'll change it's OS from Linux to Windows, but I can't remember my password, which was really short. I've seen a lot of articles about recovering password in Ubuntu, Suse enterprise server, but they are too confusing. I'm totally not good in Linux, so it made a lot more difficult to understand how to recover a password. I went on Recovery mode, pressed esc, then in new window I pressed 'e' on recovery command, then 'e' on kernel, typed 'single', pressed esc and 'b', but then after some command lines it asks me do I want to start system recovery and I pick no, then after some time it reboots and still nothing. Any help appreciated.

how do i view my linux desktop? I want to view the desktop of a linux server at IP x (as opposed to just viewing the command line by connecting via putty). First I logged into my linux server and started vncserver... It said New 'serverName:2 (myUserName)' desktop is serverName:2 (where server name and username are the actual values). I type "ps -ax" and I see that the VNCserver is running on the linux box. Next, I downloaded the TightVNC VncViewer for windows and opened it. I type in "IPaddress:5802" (where IPaddress is the actual IP address of the linux server running VNC... i know the ip is correct because I can ping it successfully). TightVNC will not connect. It tries but then just says "failed to connect to server (ipaddress::5802)... btw, the linux server is running Red Hat enterprise server 5. help?

I've been hacking with and working with UNIX/Linux since 1995 and I am above average, have lots of side work experience in freelance, but companies refuse to honor me without a degree? Have windows server 2003 enterprise and cannot get external hard drive to connect? I am using Western Digital Passport Portable hard drive model # wd1600xms-00 I have connected other removable devices such as phone but when I plug in hard drive it doesn't show up I have used it and I can use it on linux so hard drive is working ok. it lights up but windows is not reading it and there isn't any drivers for it on the wd homepage. What's the best backup solution for our company? We have about 50 employees, and about 100 total computers, including some enterprise level servers with large storage capacities. Most workstations are Windows based, most servers are Linux or BSD based. Our network is built on a stack of Cisco 10/100 switches. I would imagine the storage required for the backup would be between 500GB to 1000GB. I don't imagine doing full backups daily, but at least every week. Are there standalone solutions that can be managed remotely? I would like something that I can plug into the network, without having to build a computer system to house it.

I am setting up a small office network that is composed of the following: Hardware: - 1 Windows 2003 Enterprise server (R2) - 3 to 5 Windows XP and Vista computers Software / Services: - An FTP site will be necessary for uploading files - We will receive 5 static IPs from Verizon (DSL). One will be exclusively assigned to the FTP server. - VPN using 2003 server I have a basic idea of what needs to be done, but I am not too sure if this is the best way to do this. I am planning on getting a firewall to go between the DSL modem and a router. However, I am not sure what kind of router/switch to use because I am not sure how to handle splitting the static IP addresses. The FTP server will need to reside on the 2003 server (either via IIS or Linux running in virtualization). I also need to configure incoming VPN using Windows 2003 Server. What Operating systems are best in the long run to use for servers.? put into consideration stability, how well the compliment with other machines, software support and maintenance. The servers OS I am using are Fedora Core 5 and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. The main server is windows and the backup is the Linux machine. Linux ram Cache/buffer is taking over my memory can i stop that? I have the latest enterprise version of Redhat. I also have a test lab with the latest version of CentOS. When i do "top" or "free" used memory is consistantly high as well as cached memory. I realize that linux caches memory for performance, but i have more then enough ram to do what i need to. This is not a performance server/ws. So caching/buffering swapping is not necessary. I wonder if anybody knows a way that i can disable the cache??? Limit it ? What happens is i am monitoring my machines /net-snmp and "used real memory" is always in the 90's which triggers alerts. Reality is , the memory really isnt used its cached. This is becoming very fustrating since ive done alot of research to no avail. Any help is better then non. Thanks.

How to install a specific home network arrangement? I'll try to make this as simple but complete as possible. I already have a home network, however I would like to reorganize it. How I want to set it up is to have a 'master server' that would contain all the accounts, passwords as well as security and privileges. The individual computers would require the person to log in using the credentials from that master server. For each computer, I want to be able to say who has what access (ie, one person might not be allowed to use one computer but may use another and vice-versa), as well as who has admin or limited access per computer. Also want to be able to determine who may use network printers unrestricted, or be forced into a queue (for approval) or not at all. Would also like to be able to limit account access based on day and time (9pm latest one day, but 10pm on another day, etc). Would PREFER to use Linux (have a PC running PCLOS right now). Windows XP Pro/SP2 and Windows 2003 (Enterprise) are also options, in that order. What I dislike about Windows 2003 is that so far it requires a domain name, and I'm not trying to run a website. I don't need DNS services and DHCP is handled by the router. Any help would be appreciated.

We have just purchased a dedicated server from fasthosts, running Linux Redhat Enterprise 5, however our script needs PHP 5.2.0 and the version installed is 5.1.6 - Can anyone tell us how to upgrade this, i have found various things online but none seem to work.
