That Makes Remote Linux Server Knowledge Base
What linux distro makes a good game / file server? I'm going to be building a home server soon that will serve as both a filesharing server and a game server for LANs, and I'm having trouble deciding on an OS. FreeNAS looked good, but I don't think it'll run the majority of deticated game servers, and I don't want to shell out $100 for Windows Home Server (plus I could use the linux experience). It needs to: -Run, at the very least, the Source Dedicated Server tool in Steam, and hopefully the DS tools for other games. -Be able to share video files over a network using something similar to Windows Media Sharing, so that we can stream content onto our TV. -A web-based GUI for setup over another computer (like FreeNAS) would be nice, although I suppose we could just use a remote desktop tool. -Be able to use a built-in torrent program. If there are plug-in available for Windows Home Server that could allow use of all these things, I would be willing to bite the bullet and pay for WHS, but as I said, something in Linux would be great because I need the experience. Thanks for any help!
WebCam question.? Hi, I have a WebCam placed in a beautiful but bandwidth restricted area. I can get just enough bandwidth for a specific resolution to a single site. Could the following be done: I send this feed to a remote server and make that remote server act as if the WebCam is local to it. That way, I can broadcast the feed from the remote server and make clients use remote servers bandwidth while using only a single site bandwidth from the bandwidth restricted area. I'm open to use any platform (windows, linux) and any software. Any help would be appreciated. PHP GD2 & cURL extension? I just bought a new VPS on Linux server and I need to load the php_gd2 extension which is OFF now. In my local computer its WinXP and has the .dll file for that GD2. I tried to edit the .dll file extension in php.ini file in my remote server and restarted Apache too. But it still didn't work. In php.ini file, I found the extension_dir = ./ Where or how can I enable the gd2 extension in my VPS? PHP version is 4.4.4 The php.ini file is in /usr/lib/ directory. In this file there aren't any entries for .so files But the modules like ZLib compression is loaded. In the php.ini file, the extension_dir = "./" which means the current directory. In this directory there are files like libgd.so@, libgd.so.2, ... in different colors. So, I edited the line in php.ini file extension = "php_gd2.dll" to libgd.so and restarted the apache Still the gd support is not loaded. I'm stuck. Can anybody plz tell me how these .so files are located or the way to make the GD support ON. Same with the cURL ext too
SSH Over Internet Questions?ááá? What should I do to make sure my Linux SSH server is secure so that I can connect to it from a remote machine over the internet. I know how to configure my router to let me through (port forwarding on our WRT54G) but my dad talks about "port knocking" software and stuff. So, how would I admin my linux machine over the internet. VPN to my house doesn't count either. Sorry. I'm using Ubuntu Linux, I basically want to do this so that when I'm bored at school and have nothing else to do I can use putty to SSH into my box and play around with it.

Vps backup solution needed - how can I make sure my website database is backed up remotely on a schedule? How to do a vps backup remotely for free? Me and my partner launched an recruiting website together - we have good ties in the retail and hospitability industries and in six months from the official launch we managed to have our client base built nicely. For this we had a website developed - both graphics and engine customization. Our web programmer is in India and remained on contract to keep updating the website, but he keeps telling us to back the website (currently hosted on a virtual server) from our US office, since his connection is too slow. I learned how to do that over FTP, and I do it every day, but I plan to go on a 3 wks trip and my partner is not computer savvy, nor comfortable to do it on his own. Besides, were anything to happen while I am away, he would not have the patience to help Raj (the programmer) access the backups and put the server back if disaster strikes. I looked into remote backup solutions (my Dell laptop came with a free online backup account for 2GB), but it's not good - we need to backup a MySQL database, the actual website files (PHP) and our shared calendar and address book, with all client and candidates names. It's not a lot of data, but getting a paid account with regular backup providers it's not good - not working on the Linux system installed on the virtual private server and definitely not able to backup MySQL databases. I read about special scripts and using the rsynch command, but that is way over my head and it still requires another server to store the actual backup data. How can I do this (even thought of doing some sort of daily e-mail to my yahoo account with the backup, but that sounds so unreliable I don't even consider it anymore). Better ideas, anyone willing to share their experience? I registered for a trial account with carbonite and managed to get that working on my laptop - backing up my regular office documents and quickenbooks, but the application does not work on linux servers.

Taking over Linux server? I am in college for IT. I am in a Linux class and want to run a script file but I need the ROOT. Now, I have figured out that I can telnet from the server when signed on. If I can telnet out once on then I am thinking I can connect to a remote file hosting and run cracking tools. I know that I can create a tool file I need on the file hosting site. See I created this script that basically shows me everyone elses work. Now, some of the people have the read function turned off on their files. I can see them but can't run them. I figure if I can connect to an outside source their is no need to store any files on the server. To take over the ROOT account if I use a network listener to get the hex. Now where I get stuck is keeping the connection long enough to intercept enough chatter without them finding my processes and killing them. It would take a few weeks to get it and that's if they don't change it. This is for my final project for the class by the way. I was also thinking instead of that for a final I could write a DOS attack for it instead and shut it down. This would be easy considering the available memory on the server is in the range of 14000kb - 18000kb. I could write an endless loop that runs other scripts for endless loops and processes. It would shut the server down quick. By the way the Professor said go for it, LOL. I don't think she thought I was serious until she saw the script for other people's work I made. She actually liked it. I think she plans on using it for an example why to setup security measure on your files. What program would you run to get the ROOT?
How do you use if/then/else statements within an expect script in Linux? I am writing an expect script to test usernames on a remote mail server and I need to make the ending either fit the expected result, echo as such and exit, or find out it's bad, echo as such and exit. My script as of right now is as follows: --BEGIN CODE-- #!/usr/bin/expect -f log_user 1 set VARNAME [lindex $argv 0] spawn telnet mymailserver.blah 25 expect "220 mymailserver.blah" send -- "ehlo 1.2.3\r" expect "250 HELP" send -- "mail from: bgates@microsoft.com\r" expect "250 2.1.0 bgates@microsoft.com... Sender ok" send -- "rcpt to: $VARNAME\r" if { expect "Recipient ok" } {spawn echo "$VARNAME matches!"} else {spawn exit 1} send "quit\r"; --END CODE-- My if keeps killing the script. Output as follows: syntax error in expression " expect "Recipient ok" ": variable references require preceding $ while executing "if { expect "Recipient ok" }" (file "./tt" line BLAH) Any help from you gurus out there would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
Here is some Internet Information? ThreatsHow does the Internet create security risks for my computer? The Internet works by allowing one computer to send information to another computer across a network of worldwide computers. Rather than going directly to the intended computer, data often passes through several intermediate computers. Each intermediate computer has the potential to see the contents of data being transmitted — creating a security risk. Other security risks can be created from files and programs downloaded to your computer or sent via e-mail. Some programs, called 'viruses' are written to intentionally damage your computer and the data stored on it. Make sure security updates for your operating system (Microsoft Windows or MAC OS X for example) are consistently installed on your computer. In addition, ensure your firewall, antivirus, and anti-spyware software are up-to-date with the latest definitions. Does your computer lack antivirus protection? The Charter Security SuiteTM provides complete protection for your compter. In addition to its award winning virus protection, The Charter Security Suite includes a firewall, anti-spam, anti-phishing, anti-spyware, and parental controls. 'Malware' is a generic term used to describe viruses, spyware, adware, Trojan horse, rootkits, worms or any other program with malicious intent. What is a 'virus'? A virus is a program or piece of code that is installed and runs on your computer without your knowledge. Viruses can also replicate themselves and are often designed so that they automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted as attachments to an e-mail, as downloads, or via diskettes or CDs. Some viruses are harmless, but most can be quite damaging by erasing data or causing your hard disk to reformat. What is a 'worm'? Worms are a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself. Worms most often use parts of an operating system that are automatic and usually invisible to the user. It’s common for worms to be noticed only when their uncontrolled replication consumes system resources, slowing or halting other applications and traffic. « Back to Top What is a 'Trojan horse'? A Trojan horse is a malicious code that is contained inside seemingly harmless programs or data. The purpose of a Trojan horse is to gain control of the computer and execute whatever it had been program to do. Many Trojan horses are designed to damage data on your hard drives, send back personal information, or corrupt your hard drive. In one celebrated case, a Trojan horse was programmed to find and destroy computer viruses. A Trojan horse may be widely redistributed as part of a computer virus. What is 'adware'? Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. What is 'spyware'? Spyware is software installed on your computer without your knowledge that gathers information such as surfing habits, for later retrieval by advertisers and/or other interested parties. It can record and send through the Internet your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other confidential and private information. It is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, surveillance tool, or a tool for spying on users to gain unauthorized access. It can enter a computer as a virus or through installation of a new program. What is a 'rootkit'? A rootkit is a set of processes or files that installs itself on your system without your knowledge or permission. Rootkits attempt to hide from antivirus, anti-spyware, and system management utilities. Originally, rootkits were used on UNIX® based systems for benign purposes. Today however, rootkits may be used to create a backdoor into your system for malicious purposes - such as intercepting information sent from your system, logging your keystrokes, using your system for denial of service attacks, and other deviant activities. Rootkits exist on multiple operating systems including UNIX®, Linux, Solaris®, and Microsoft Windows®. « Back to Top What is a 'zombie' computer? A 'zombie' computer is a system that has often been compromised by a virus. The virus typically installs remote access software on the compromised machine and the 'host' machine takes control of the compromised computer. Zombie computers are often used to send spam or send overwhelming amounts of traffic to a targeted server- causing it to crash. This form of attack is called a Distributed Denial of Service Attack.
