How do I learn Linux server management? I wish to become a master at Linux Server Management (mainly Fedora) so that I can manage web hosting servers. Where do I start? How do I go about it? How much time will it take?
Which version of Windows Server do I need? I am switching hosts and moving to managed hosting. I have ASP3, ASP.NET, MSSQL, PHP, and mySQL that need to be supported. I'm sure I could make Apache work with Mono or use IIS for XP with ISAPI Rewrite, but this is for a web-based business and I can't afford to screw up. I'm trying to figure out what software to buy, obviously at the best price. Can I get by with Web Server 2003 and SQL Express? Do I need R2 Standard? Small Business Server? Can someone please shed some insight into what the best OS for an ASP.NET managed server would be? Thanks I'm leaning towards SBS 2003 right now. There are used copies on eBay and I found out that the free version of SQL server only supports 1 CPU/1GB RAM (I have 2 of each). Thanks again!
Is hosting a minecraft server from my computer secure? I managed to get it all working using port forwarding etc, but then I got told that opening the ports is very dangerous and makes it very easy for hackers to enter your computer. Is this true? if so how do I make it secure?
I'm looking for a company that offers dedicated managed servers in the us, asia, and europe & can mirror them. Our company has a worldwide presence and we offer 26 different versions of our website all based from our single server in california. Our customers in Asia and Europe say our website is too slow for them. So we would like to find a way to set up our main server in the us, and then mirror it to asia and europe. Ideally we would like to find a managed hosting solution that can handle the coordination as well as server maintenance, so we can spend our efforts on the website itself. Alas, I can't find any hosting companies that seem to offer hosting in a variety of countries and we were hoping to avoid having to work with 3 seperate companies in different parts of the world due to the added risks.
What classes should I take if I want to be able to manage a server and networks for a hosting company? Hey Yahoo Community, I was wondering what classes should I take to gain the knowledge I need to manage a whole network of servers for large companies such as 1&1? If I could, I'd also love to get certified or a degree in the process. So Network and Server ITs out there, please tell me what courses you took in College to gain the knowledge needed! Thanks! Warm Regards, Jason H. If you took a special course at ITT, or University of Phoenix, please let me know as well, so I can look into it! howya, you don't allow users to e-mail you. Does anyone know if the Comp TIA classes are offered at any physical colleges?
Server-park for "managing" my own web-hosting service? Wanting to give something back, I'm toying with the idea of setting-up a small web-hosting service to provide free hosting for a select few... probably by using sub-domains (e.g. site1.mydomain.com, site2.mydomain.com,...) for each. The obvious choice would be to set-up a web-server and stuff on one of my own computers, but neither my internet-connection nor projected up-time is good enough. I was therefor wondering if there are any server-parks that allows me to rent (cheaply) a Linux/Unix server for such a purpose, and manages keeping it up? I would need Apache, PHP and MySQL for sure, and the ability to add packages of PHP scripts freely. I doesn't matter too much if the server is specifically to be used for web-services, or if it's set-up more for general purposes... though the latter is preferable. I basically want "my own" Linux machine -- to do with as I please -- with a killer connection, and someone to keep it up-and-running.
Just got a Linux cPanel Virtual Private Server hosting and? I cannot for the life of me find the file manager or the public folder directory so I can upload html files, images or scripts. All I managed to do so far was change the nameservers, add a hostname, which is some word plus my domain name, again, this is for a Linux cPanel VPS acct., NOT shared. Since it is an unmanaged VPS acct no support is given by Dotster anyone know of a in-depth and easy tutorial, besides this host. I need this really quick. Is it possible to control a server from iPhone? I wanted to host my own game server using some VPN software like Hamachi. I wanted to know if there was an app for the iPod Touch or iPhone that would let me manage the server without having to leave my computer on all day or anything similar to this (maybe if there was something similar that would run on another portable device). All help is needed and greatly appreciated!
What are some reliable yet inexpensive hosting solutions for dedicated servers? I have developed a java based web application using struts, tomcat, mysql etc. I want to host all of these on a server (OS platform should not matter since it is all Java and mysql) that runs in some reliable data center. I want to get the benefit of all the managed services (they take backups etc right) but have my own server for dealing with the user-load and also that the Java apps dont run nicely on shared hosted systems (and they will not have all the tools and libraries we use). I am looking to see if there is any data center in India as well that has proven connectivity. Whatsoever information on this topic is much appreciated.
I need specs for a Windows Terminal Server for Quickbooks E7? A company I used to work for asked me to upgrade their network and I'd like to get some input from someone who has a similar setup or has installed one. Since upgrading to Quickbooks Enterprise 7.0, their company file has doubled in size (now 1.5GB), and everything is running a lot slower than it didd with version 5. We had to upgrade to 7 because they had reached the limit in item numbers, which is supposed to be eliminated in version 7. So now we've decided to get a new server and use terminal services on all the clients. We currently have about 9 clients running Windows XP Pro, which we plan to retire and go to thin clients eventually to make the network easier to manage. The new server will host the quickbooks company file (duh) and the clients will connect to it using terminal services. With ten clients, I imagine it takes a lot of RAM to do this. Any help in the brand of computers, specs getting all of this to work would be greatly appreciated. Current Setup: Server: P4 2.4Ghz, 1GB RAM, Windows Server2003 Clients: P4 1.6Ghz, 512MB RAM, Win XP Pro Network: 1Gbit

Changing Web Hosting.. To Personal DNS Server? Hi, I have a domain name www.avgoc.com and couple of subdomains forum.avgoc.com and funstuff.avgoc.com. The domain is hosted on some other network. For specific reasons I wanted to have contorl of the server and have set up my own DNS server with the content. The server is working fine. Now I would like to transfer/redirect the traffic to my server. I have features like Domain Forwarding and Managed DNS where I can set up all the parameters except changing the name servers. I am little confused regarding the name server issue. I have set up the new name server on my personal DNS server as ns.avgoc.com. How do I update the name servers and divert the traffic to use my personal DNS server. For Further information I have taken the screen shots of the configuration and can be accessed via these links: 1. Hosting a Minecraft server? Well, last night I sucessfully got my server up and running. It quickly became popular and now there's always 2-3 people online at least. But even though my server is fairly safe, I want to make it permanently safe. 1. Griefer protection -- What kind of protection should I use? I was thinking Cuboid, but its only compatible with hMod which won't work with 1.5.. Anything else I can use? 2. How can I keep my server effcient an non-laggy? 3. Fly mod? 4. How can I make colored MOTD's? 5. Is there better server software than just Mojangs? Although it gets the job done I think I manage a better server with better software. 6. Any advice you'd like to add? Thanks for answers! Oh and.. My server has open building and it works for everyone.. except one person for some reason. he is at my house and is using my wifi connection, is that affecting it?

Cheap Minecraft Server? I have a minecraft server and I want it hosted on a server, (It's to annoying to have my comp running 24/7 and my net only lets around ~5 ppl play at the same time) well anyway, back to the main point, I'm looking for some cheap, simple site, which allows me to host and manage my server, the server should be able to have around 5~10 players using it at the same time.
Which webhost(s) offer affordable, reliable, and easy to maintain dedicated hosting? I need suggestions for good webhosts that offer affordable dedicated hosting and support for people who don’t know much about managing their own server. I currently operate several high traffic sites and am in need of affordable (cost not exceeding $150 per month) , reliable (offers great support), and easy to maintain dedicated hosting (I know nothing about managing a server myself). I'd prefer to hear from people who have had actual hosting experience with the webhost. Thank you for your time.
I want to make a website where photos can be uploaded by users? I design websites. I want to make a website where users can upload photos in gif/jpg/bmp format. I know php and its simple commands/functions by which i can let the users upload photos. But the problem is that I don't know the security concerns and hassles associated with letting the users upload their photos. (I host my website in a server which is managed by a hosting company.)
What service providers can provide MS Outlook OWA capability remotely i.e. without me buying a server? I have my own domain and various email addresses hanging off that domain. However, I need to enable ten remotely located employees to have full access to their shared global address book of recipients, from Internet cafes or hotels etc. Of course the simple and obvious thing to do would be to buy a server put it in my office and get a license for Microsoft Exchange Server that will automatically enable Outlook Web Access Premium / OWA client....BUT...and this is the point....I like the idea of software as a service...managing hardware is not my core competency...I want the hardware to be some eles's headache. I just want OWA managed by a hosted service provider somewhere, anywhere, on the globe. Just not in my office! We have a website that doesn't require me to have a server on the premises, so why should I want a physical server in my building when all I want is OWA access on the road?
Need assistance with finding good hosting service? I'm looking for a place to host my application. It's not a standard "web hosting", but I have a program that I need to run 24/7 - connected to the internet of course and all the shabang. My program runs on XP64bit (not supporting server environments so far) and it needs to be on a dedicated managed server/computer which I can install any program I want (my program is actually several programs running together). Of course I need to be able to remote desktop to the computer and transfer files onto it, it needs to be secured, fast and reliable. Oh yeah, I'm on a budget.... ANY IDEAS WHERE TO START? I tried looking in google and similar, but all full of ads and I don't know what to pick. HELP PLEASE

What is the best way to sell software hosting service for business applications to companies? If I have a data center where I can set up the servers and the necessary software, what is the best way to sell the hosting service where I will manage and support the business applications for companies? Basically, I will be the outsourcing company for the applications and off-loading the work from the client companies. I plan to host business applications such as accounting software, HR/Payroll, CRM, ERP, etc. As a professional applications hosting company, I will be able to host customer's applications more efficiently thereby reducing the cost.
How to configure Vmware server for the host to be visible from the www? I want to experiment with servers a little and I ran into a problem. The host is Windows XP and the guest is Ubuntu server. I managed to set up openSSH and apache and the site is visible from the host but I cant access it from outside my LAN (I have a router) or inside my LAN (from a different computer of course). How to configure Vmware & XP so I can access my virtual server from the internet? If I choose bridged connection XP complains something like "there is another IP conflicting with this one"
Unmanaged dedicated server questions? Hello, I am considering starting a website that will require a dedicated server the thing is that I would much much rather an unmanaged server to a managed one simply because a managed server is soo much more expensive. The problem I have is that I have never before administered a server of my own with such depth and control over it and the extent of my knowledge is an account with a shared host. The site will only be using a small php script and I couldn't imagine any intensive changes to the server ever being needed. My question is would you recomend me getting an unmanaged server? Are they difficult to administer? Can you learn how to administer one just by having one?(exerience) Are they as daunting as they sound? Are there any guides out there for how to manage a fedora core 6 server with WHM and Cpanel? (Links Please) How could someone administer a server without having a control panel(cpanel/whm)? Sorry I was not trying to compare dedicated to shared but to give an example of the depth of my knowledge, although I have run a webserver before on my own computer it isn't quite the same because i am using windows xp. The reason it needs to be dedicated is because the site will be cpu/ ram intensive. I dont want to go into detail about the site although I'm sure people can draw their own conclusion not that it is necessary. Also where do people learn this stuff without going to an education establishment and taking a course in it?
Should I rent or buy my own server? I run a 6 Home Health offices. We need a server for email and accessing patient documents (pdf files). Once in a while we would like to do a webinar to other offices. Assuming we are only gonna scan in our paperwork to pdf and send via email to the person managing the files what would be better; to have a server hosted or to buy one? If so what type should we have? With hosting will privacy and HIPPA be an issue. These documents are very sensitive to privacy. Thanks for your help.
Dell Server 2003- 25 CALs- one ADC- no Terminal Licensing Server? I'm now overseeing a month-old DELL Windows 2003 Server Standard system that hosts an in-house database. Example - Office computer clicks a desktop icon which references the C: drive on that local machine. The GUI pops up and asks for a user name and password which is checked against the server-hosted database software. The program then read and writes to the server-hosted database. This is a very small organization with maybe 15 individual PCs and one Server. No thin clients - all machines have HDs and Windows operating systems. The system was purchased with the initial 5 licenses for Server 2003 and 20 additional CALs, but no one installed Terminal Services or Terminal Licensing on this server. It is currently configured as a File Server (for automated backup purposes only), DNS Server, DHCP Server, and AD Server. No print server, no TS, no TLS. We have one Xerox WorkCentre 5030 which is not managed by any software on any machine, just plugged into the network. My questions are as follows - are the CAL licenses even necessary since each machine is individually licensed and is not viewing a GUI provided by the server? Wouldn't this classify just be an application server or even just a file server? Do DELL Server 2003 machines come pre-installed with the CAL licenses and that is why my predecessor never bothered with Terminal Services? Do I then need a separate machine to serve as a Terminal Licensing Server - does that machine require Server 2003 installed as well or can it run XP or Win2k, or even a linux solution? If it requires Server 2003 do I now need to purchase another Server 2003 license? What are the dangers of just running the Terminal Licensing services from the same server as the Active Domain? As you can see I'm stumped and need some help here - so thanks in advance!

Which is best offshore hosting service? I like to start a website that registered users can upload and download files. As I know, many hosting providers does not allow all my requirements. And a few service providers allow some of them, not all. I need your help. Please guide me the right hosting service. or give me any links that could help me. My requirements: > At least 200 GB webspace > 3 TB (or at least 500 GB) monthly bandwidth > Fastest and Reliable Connection and Servers > PHP 5 or 4 > MySQL 5 or 4 > Apache > UNIX/Linux/freeBSD > Fantastico Package > Shell Access > At least 50 FTP Accounts. (controllable user accounts via control panel) > 1000 Email IDs with webmail, POP3, SMTP > Spam filter > At least 99% Uptime - Guaranteed > Allowing any file types (including mp3, mpg, avi, swf, exe, zip, pdf, doc, exl, .....) > offshore hosting (means the server is in a country where there are few/no laws regulating online activity, porn, warez, etc...) I will not allow porn, warez, cracks. If I find such a file is in my website, I must remove it as soon as possible. But, in the meantime, my hosting service should allow it. > My hosting account should not be removed/suspended for my user's file. > Managed Service > Dedicated IP/Server > 24/7 Support I'm waiting for your replies. Please give me the advice and links. Thanks in advance.
What is the most reliable programming language/server for an online based database? I'm working on a website and hopefully expecting a decent amount of traffic. Mainly, the site will serve as a search portal to other sites in the related category, also, as a sidekick, the site will be hosting multimedia content (live webcams: either Java or Flash based). Database wise, i'm looking for something reliable to manage the clients' profiles along with the users' accounts.

Recommend a Dedicated Server / Hosting to me? Also - how hard is it to run a dedicated server? Is it similar to shared hosting at all? I've used shared hosting in the past and it was fairly easy to run, but I've heard (managed) dedicated servers has a learning curve. Also - what's your favorite dedicated hosting company?
Managing SQL Server online. Is there a tool out there? Hello, On a web site I manage I have a Microsoft SQL database. As administrator I would like to easily edit, access, delete, add any record in the database tables while the database is on the server where the site is hosted. Is there any software to do this? I dont have Enterprise Manager or any fancy tool ... Sure I could create an administration section on the web site but it would be a lost of time since I am the only one which has access to the database. Thanks ...

Is it Hard to Setup and Manage a Dedicated Server at Godaddy? Hello Everyone! I run a few websites on a Godaddy shared hosting plan. So far my sites are fine, but I know that if I start to build a lot of traffic (which I hope will happen within the next few months), that I will need a dedicated server eventually. Right now I manage everything myself (website setup and shared hosting), and have good basic computer skills. However, I have NO experience with a dedicated server at all, and don't have a clue about how they work. I have heard they are hard to set up. So my question is, does anyone have experience setting up a dedicated server? If so, would I be able to do this myself, or is it much harder to set up compared to Godaddy's shared hosting? Do you have any recommendations on how I could learn to do this myself? Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer into this! Have a great day.

Great Success ! Apache is working on your cPanel® and WHM™ Server? ya when i open up nexon.net it shows this If you can see this page, then the people who manage this server have installed cPanel and WebHost Manager (WHM) which use the Apache Web server software and the Apache Interface to OpenSSL (mod_ssl) successfully. They now have to add content to this directory and replace this placeholder page, or else point the server at their real content. ATTENTION! If you are seeing this page instead of the site you expected, please contact the administrator of the site involved. (Try sending an email to <webmaster@domain>.) Although this site is running cPanel, WebHost Manager, and Apache software it almost certainly has no other connection to cPanel Inc. or the Apache Group.
I want to start a web hosting business. How do I start? I always wanted to start a business, in the web hosting industry. I installed server 2003 on an old laptop I had, played with IIS and Active Directory. I also played around with linux, and Apache. I'm more experienced on Apache, than IIS. I want to manage customers, websites, and feel cool. I wanted a business like this since I was small. I'm 17 now, a senior in high school. I want to do networking and security when I get older. I would like to start a web hosting business. It would make me harder worker, and then money to look at and tell myself I did a good job. I see web hosting companies all the time, not providing support all the time. :/ Once in a while, they log in to their support, then back out. I'd like to be the host that does provide support all the time. I sold Microsoft keys a while ago on eBay, and in two weeks - I managed to sell over 100 keys, and got $3,200. I haven't had one person say my support was bad. They all thanked me for helping them out right away, after buying the key. So, anyhow, does anyone know where I can start to start my own business? Should I buy a dedicated server, advertise, gain customers. Then when I get money, I can advertise more, buy a bigger server. With more and more money, I can buy my own server and bandwidth and host at my house. Does that how other businesses start? I have about $3000 I can use to start my business, but I would only like to spend $200 of it now because I need to look for a car.
What do you need to learn in order to deal with managing servers/web hosting? Hi! I have 1-2 questions about managing servers: What do you need to learn in order to deal with managing servers? Sorry about the strange question, it is kind of hard to find the right words :/.... If you don't understand the question, I'm curious as to what your personal experience in programming is! thanks!
What is the best way to get more performance out of my network? We have 6 Hp 2524 10/100 autosensing managed switches connected to each other with the gigabit uplink we have are router plugged into the first switch and servers plugged into the second switch. I have noticed that the further down the line the worse your performance gets. We have an exchange server that is hosted outside our office and some other web servers that we use have been moved to a data center as well...What would be the best way to get more performance with this... (Our switches use mini-gbics to link to each other) I have thought about an 8 port gigabit switch to have all the switches connect to? any thoughts or suggestions? Maybe I need to give more information... pretty much every port is filled up on every switch.. (a few ports not in use but very few... my calculations are 24 ports at 100 mbit = 2.4 gigabits useage per switch...) I need some better ideas on getting more performance....
How do I get a web form to write to a MySQL database using PHP myAdmin? I am trying to use a webform to post data to my MySQL database. I have all of this set up on my website that is hosted on yahoo. I have php MyAdmin installed on the server to manage the database. For some reason, I can't get my webform to post the info to my database. Can anyone help?
Reasonable Server Setup? I have an old Pentium III 750Mhz Dell notebook with 256mb of ram and a 20gb hard drive. Since I do not have an optical drive on the system, I rely upon Windows based Linux installers or the dreaded PXE-boot installations. Since Ubuntu is the easiest to install, I decided I will use Xubuntu (an Ubuntu derrivative). So here are the functions I want it to perform: - Router. I would like it to accept at least 1250 concurrent connections (not that I'll ever reach that number of concurrent connections, but I would like to be able to use the connection without bottlenecks if I am running BitTorrent to download the latest release of a Linux distro or a pod/vidcast.) It is necessary to have a way to manage this from a local computer using a web-interface. It also must act as a firewall with VPN passthrough. - DNS Server - File Server for internal use. Must be able to be connected to from Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. - Print Server for internal use. Must be able to be connected to from Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. - Web Server for public use. Must be able to use PHP, Perl, MySQL in conjunction with it. - Mail Server for private use (only people in my house / family will be able to use it as a client, however I still want to be able to recieve emails and send emails like one would do with a hosted Mail Server). Anti-SPAM is a must. - Security Gateway. Not as important, but if I could run it, I would. - Simplified Windows Domain Controller. Again not as important, but I would like something that is easy to configure and that allows for Mac OS X / Linux clients. -
Social Web Hosting,HELP!!? Hello, Can anyone explain to me exactly how social networking software works? I have a website domain already with yahoo, but I would like to find another host. Domain Names and Shared Web Hosting? I'm fairly new with choosing web hosts on the web and as a web designer, I'm having various clients in different hosting services, some better or worse than others but they become difficult for me to handle. I was thinking about using 1 account on a clustered/grid servers to manage all websites at once, but I'm unsure of how I'll be able to sort out the domain names or if I'll only be able to use one. If I'm only able to ensue 1 domain name, can you please refer me to a host/service that could help me? P.S. The hosts I was looking at were myriadnetwork and mediatemple.
Who should my first employee be in my video sharing website? Hello, First i know very little when it comes to programing and software etc. I want to find out how and who to hire for my website project. From the research i have done it seems that i could start off getting hosting from a Managed Hosting with a dedicated server for around $100 to $400 to start out with. I was told because its a youtube clone type site that i would be better off with this type of set up. Now the question is: Who is the person called who will be able to correct software, install new software, change the content/design of website. The go to person when there is trouble? Software engineer? Also who is the person who i go to when i need to upgrade a program or ad another program to my website. I would like to start placing small classified ads to get help with my project and want to know who i should hire and what roll they should play. Please keep in mind I am trying to save money I need to hire the bare MINIMUM I would need to make the company run. thanks you

Can I have a domain (like www.domain.com) point to a folder on my web server, like (www.server.com/domain)? I'd like to run another website on my web server. I want to use at least two unique domains. Basically, if someone enters the new domain, say domain.com, it's really accessing a folder on my server (say server.com/domain/, but the url looks like the user is on the domain.com website. I don't have web hosting software that manages multiple accounts like a professional reseller web host. Is there something I setup with the domain name company, and use like a "virtual host" or something like that?
Help Finding A Server Ready To Host A Website?!? We are going to host our own website, and I am in need of a server (or even a computer) to do so. Can anyone recommend a server with ample space for large amounts of media, but one that is practically ready to go out of the box, and all I would need to do is hook it up and install an operating system (if its not included). Also are there any control panels for web hosting that are free or under $200, like cPanel, that I can install on the server to help with managing the websites?
Is there any fee/affordable easy-to-use It software that allows me to manage/publish data info into a website? It has to run on Windows, and be able to be updated from the web. I want to publish a website with restaurant listings with pix and info, and maybe votes. I have fairly good knowledge of HTML, and graphic editing, but i fail miserabily in the database programming part of it. My host server runs on UNIX, so i preferably would like something PHP/MySQL related, but are open to other productive solutions. I know Dreamweaver, but don't find it easy to work with for creating database tables.
phpMyAdmin / MySQL Database Help? I am trying to create a Database on my server for some of my web apps (guestbok and stuff). I have downloaded phpMyAdmin to manage mySQL. I have it working on my local machine with Xaamp but how do i make it work with my hosting server? Do i need to install it ON that remote server or...?
I currently have google apps through my server and domain at hostway.com, now I want to switch to someone else I currently have Google Apps through my web hosting company, www.hostway.com. After not being happy with the service at all, a friend told me about a better hosting company. I want to make the switch, but i have already verified my Google Apps email with my current provider (hostway). After spending hours trying to research this problem with with google, in their help groups etc, I have turned up empty. Does anyone know how to transfer your google apps account to another web host (who will also manage my domain) in a seamless transfer? I'm worried about having all of my email deleted upon transfer. Thanks!!
Good Web Hosting? I want a good web hosting service. I want a website builder on this too. I need an FTP server. I also need a visual editor. I would like to have it require as little HTML as possible. I will be thrilled if none is required. I've been using Bravenet. It's alright. I had the premium service. It just wasn't very easy to manage, and it had their application logos everywhere. I want no host logos whatsoever. I want to be able to get a cheap domain name with this service. I would like it free, but I'm willing to spend a little dough if necessary. Tried Bravenet, I want something somewhat similar. THANKS!!!!!

is IP to IP (direct IP connection) for video chat possible?? I'm currently using Yahoo Messenger for chatting with webcam and notice that more often than not, the video streaming lags. While at the same time, I have this device from D-Link (DVC-1000 which is a stand alone webcam for video conferencing that turns your TV into a video conferencing device. Of course the other party should also have this device) and upon observation and comparison, I can't help but notice that when I use DVC-1000, there's no lag at all while YM based and/or MSN Messenger based video chats often has lags in video streaming. Could it be that D-Link's host server for this service is better and more dedicated for video conferencing than MSN and Yahoo?? Lastly, any of you guys have a much better host for FREE video conferencing that is better than MSN & Yahoo? And of course, nothing will beat I guess direct IP to IP video chatting as there will be no host to manage the process, is this direct IP to IP video chatting possible? If so, how do I set it up?
good free hosting which supports joomla? I'd like to install and try out the newer Joomla 1.5, but don't have an "extra site to play with" in order to install and manage content with it. I'm into web design by choice, but I'd like to play with it to see how it works as a CMS. Do you know of any free hosting sites (or cheap) where I can install and run Joomla on their linux server? essentially, I'm not sure if the free hosting's ad supported deal is compatible. so if you know if a cheap hosting place -ANYTHING BUT GODADDY- that i can seamlessly run joomla on, I'd appreciate it.
server recommendation? which host offers the best enterprise, managed or deticated hosting? I am starting a website and plan to get an ALOT of traffic a couple of months after the launch could you help??

I want to know how i can edit my website with regular computers (instead of server computer) and how i can upload new files to my hosting server. Thanks
server ettiquette for all the uneducated people out there!? The next time you're out eating at a resturant, look at your server. Do you think they are really happy to be doing that job? The answer is no, they are not, but its what we do, and we do it for the money so please help them out. Its a tougher job than you think and you should pay them accordingly! There are SO many people out there flooding the restaurants w/o any knowledge of how to tip. Here is a short guide for the general public to follow. Feel free to print out and store in your wallet and/or purse. 1. CHILDREN "THE LITTLE DEVILS": If you have children, DO NOT let them, open and dump anything on the table (ie; salt, sugar, etc). IF YOU DO, you must leave an extra $5 for the server to clean up YOUR CHILD'S mess & to restock the now unusable wasted items. Don't get mad if you ask for crackers and your server tells you they're out when you just saw another table eating crackers with their soup -- can you blame them for not wanting to clean up the mess afterward? We are neither their babysitter nor their parent. The least you can do is pay us for the extra work. Also make sure you control your kids and don't let them scream or run around the restraunt. It's very distracting not to mention dangerous if they get ran over by a server with hot food in their hands. Just because you're out for dinner doesn't give you an excuse to let your kids mess around on their own free will like wild monkeys! 2. "THE CAMPERS": If you feel the necessity to stay for longer than 15 minutes after you pay, its an extra $3 every 30 minutes. We make our money from the tables. If you are in one and we can't seat it, we don't make money. 3. COMPLIMENTS (VERBAL TIPS): Telling a server they are the best server they've ever had is not a tip. If we are good, let us know by leaving us more money. We cant pay our bills on compliments. Its not that we don't appreciate the praise, its just that if you tell us how great we were and then leave 10% it's an insult. 4. THE SALVATION PAMPHLETS: Prayer cards or any other religious pamphlet is NOT a tip. It is insulting that you assume we are w/o religion and must save us. Again, like #3, we cant pay bills w/ prayer cards. We'd go to church on Sundays if it wasn't mandatory to work on Sundays because EVERYONE who goes to church follows it by eating out. Also don't try to preach to us while we are working. We don't go to your work and put you down so don't do it to us.....plus, we don't have time to listen to you babble. 5. TIPPING: It is not 1960. Cost of living has gone up dramatically since then. 18% is the MINIMUM amount of what you should be tipping your servers. Remember, that steak is $12.99 not $22.99 because restaurants aren't required to pay minimum wage in most states! Here in AZ we get paid whooping $2.13 an hr meaning all of our money is made in tips. If you were not properly paid in your profession, you would be pretty pissed too! We are taxed on 10 percent of your meal automatically, not to mention we have to tip out a percentage of our sales - your bill - to the hosts, bartenders, and bussers. So if you dont leave a tip, WE END UP PAYING FOR YOUR MEAL!! So move that decimal one spot left and multiply by 2 and your server will never be disappointed. ($25 = $2.50 x 2 = $5) 6. THE COMPLAINERS: If you get a discount because of your food was prepared wrong or something, do not take it out of our tip. We didn't cook it. The cooks get paid hourly regardless if the food sucks. However, we only make what you give us. And don't ever leave a percentage on the total after the discount or comp -- always tip on what the total would have been. 7. THE LATE ONES: If you come into the restaurant 10 mins before closing or any time near closing hurry up and order your food and get out. Closed means closed, not social hour. It is so rude to sit there and take your sweet *** time. We can't leave until you leave because we have to do sidework and clean the table you are sitting at. We don't want to stand there waiting for you for an extra hour just because you don't want to go home. We recommend 24 hour establishments such as Dennys or Steak n Shake if you wish to sit into the wee hours of the night. 8. THE TABLE HOGGERS: If you only come in for coffee or a dessert, to do paper work, or to have a meeting, don't sit there taking up our booths for hours. We are not Starbucks or a hotel restaurant. If you want to sit for hours, go there or else you better leave a good tip for us and camping fee included. 9. THE GREET: When we come up to the table to greet you and we ask how you are doing please let us know. We honestly want to know how you are doing. If you are in a bad mood we want to know that from the beginning. A confused stare or complete silence does not suffice as a reply to "How are you doing?". Also don't interrupt our greeting and say "I want coffee", "can we get some bread, or "what are the soups?".......thats just rude! Do you enjoy it when people blatently interupt what you are saying? Didn't think so. ***In addition, if your server stops by the table and says they will be right with you, they are not lying, so sit and be patient and wait for them to come back to properly greet you. Sometimes we can get a liitle busy so we don't give a **** how you feel about it....you will just have to wait a minute! So there's not much point in throwing requests in our faces, you'll have to wait for us either way. SO BE NICE! 10. THOSE DAMN CELL PHONES: Don't ever talk on your cell phone in a restraunt. This is probably the rudest thing to do. If you must be on your cell, at least keep your voice down in respect for other customers. If you are on your cell phone when we walk up to greet your table we will walk away until you get off your phone. Not to be rude, but simply because we don't want to deal with you trying to manage 2 conversations. Just show some respect and give us your attention for a couple of minutes. 11. TAKE-AWAY OR TO-GOS: Always remember to tip the take-out order servers! They work just as hard as a server, and hardly ever get tips for it! THEY DESERVE TO BE TIPPED TOO! 12. FOREIGNERS: Welcome to America! Here, we tip our servers appropriately, not this 10% Bullshit! All of the above apply! 13. THE CARDINAL RULE: Don't **** with people who handle your food! Be nice to us....our job is a lot harder than it looks! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SERVERS READING THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please repost this so the word can get out, since so many people are uneducated about tips and our lives depend on this - at least for now...... 14 hours ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details 10 minutes ago and everyone, i love my job. I am not mad at people, just trying to get a point across becuase people usually dont listen until its bieng yelled out!
Can I point a domain name to one IP for serving web pages and another IP for managing e-mail? ... and how? I'm helping a company set up a new website... being a design guy... this technical stuff sometimes baffles me.... though I think this could be resolved using DNS (A and MX records). The company has a domain name established which handles their e-mail... and may connect to their an intranet. We registered a new domain name and are hosting it with a different company... we want to redirect the original domain name to the new one (for web pages only). We still want mail routed through the other server and do not want to interrupt the intranet. firstDomain.com = points to HostCompanyOne, server hosts e-mail, no physical website, points to internal network, has several IP's secondDomain = points to HostCompanyTwo, serves website, no e-mail - Could this be done in DNS? - Where does the redirecting or pointing take place (Registrar, HostCompanyOne, etc)? - Anything I might be overlooking ... potential issues? - Thoughts or ideas? your expertice is appreciated... thanks
two web address, two servers, one ip address? Hello, I have two different servers. One is SBS 2003 and the other is server 2003. They are both using IIS6 to broadcast the websites. Then I am using No-ip for the dynamic IP for the URL's. The problem is server a host’s one URL and server b hosts another. Is there a way with IIS6 to have it manage the correct URL's to the correct servers? Or some other way? Web host companies do this and I am just wondering how it's being done. Thanks!
