Should I use RAID 1 or RAID 5 for my Virtual Machine host server (Microsoft Hyper-V)? I am building a server that will be used as a virtual machine hosting server, using Microsoft Hyper-V as the virtual server hosting OS. The hardware I am using will be a motherboard with capacity for 6 SATA 10,000 RPM disks. I can set them up using RAID 1 or RAID 5. I cannot use a mix of different RAID options for the disks. I must choose either RAID 1 or RAID 5 for all the disks. Which option would be best for performance? I plan to create 10 virtual machines on the system. I know I would have more total disk capacity using RAID 5 instead of RAID 1 (mirroring), but am wondering if there is a benefit to using RAID 1 for the entire system, in regards to general performance. The virtual machines will be a mix of workstations, database servers, web servers, and other systems. The host OS (MS Hyper-V) uses a very small amount of disk space. The a majority of space will be dedicated the various virtual servers running. There is no need to send me links to websites describing RAID (I know about the various general benefits of the different types of RAID). I am interested in hearing from someone who has implemented a RAID configuration when setting up a virtual hosting server and have some good advice regarding which option offers best performance.

How to create a virtual n/w test lab using MS virtual PC to install windows 2003 server and xp as guests? I am preparing for my mcse and wanted to install and work around windows 2003 server, i have managed to install windows 2003 server and 2 windows 2000 as guests OS in my winXP host machine. I have used the Shared Networking (NAT) setting for all three guest operating systems. the NAT provides the ip address for all 3 pcs, however Im Unable to join the 2 windows 2000 machines to the domain. Have manually configured DNS for the 2 pcs to point to the server ip address. 2k3 server- Shared network NAT enabled - MS loop back adapter enabled other 2 pcs use Shared Networking (NAT). I dont want my HOST pc to be connected to this network in anyway. I know there should be a simple way to do this. Windows 2008 server on virtual pc - no internet connection? Im running Windows 7 64 bit. I installed windows virtual server and then installed Windows server 2008 on that for testing/training purposes. I have the integration features turned on, and i can access files on the host computer from the virtual machine. However, the actual server cannot connect to my internet connection. I have an Ethernet card plugged into a cable modem; no network or anything. Can anyone help me with this? I have a good bit of technical knowledge, but my networking/connectivity knowledge is limited. How do I setup virtual hosts in apache, I need two that do this? The first virtual host should let me type in localhost and look at the "Index of /" with all of my projects in it. The second virtual host should use a subdomain for the ServerName and have its DocumentRoot set to one of the specific projects. VMWare Server 2 - Assign public IP to virtual server? I have a virtual environment of 3 guest servers all running Windows Server 2003R2, with the host OS running Windows Server 2003R2 as well. On the host I have 4 network adapters, one for the host and the others 3 for the gust machines. I am trying to set this configuration up so that I use a public IP (I have a pool of 5) for each virtual server, but I just cannot figure out how to assign this configuration to the server. Also, with the limited documentation that I have been able to find, I am not even sure if I am doing this process correctly. I would really appreciate any help on this topic. Addendum: I am attempting to assign a physical adapter to each guest OS. Do I set the manual configuration on the host or on the guest OS? This is a business DSL connection, so we have 5 public static IP addresses in our pool. Let's say I lease a dedicated server from some hosting company.? I use a software app like Virtuozzo or VMWare to create 4 Virtual Machines inside the server. I now have 4 virtual machines in the server, each with its own memory, OS, Windows. Would I be able to log into one of the VMs using remote software, and then - from that machine, browse the internet, go to other websites, download software, and basically do anything that I could do on a regular PC? Part of my trouble in understanding my own question, is that the leased dedicated server would probably not have a monitor attached to it, and I am used to using remote software that lets you see what is happening on the desktop of the computer being accessed. I am trying to figure out what I would see from my computer if I was connecting to one that did not have a monitor. Would I still be able to use my local mouse and keyboard in the environment of the remote server, and would I be able to do what ever I want to accomplish on the VM, despite it's status as a webhost server?

Wilcard DNS (similar to hosts file) in Windows without a local dedicated DNS server...? I have a local test server running Apache2 with virtual hosting setup correctly. I'd like to set up a system so that *.dev is redirected to my testing server at 192.168.0.4 I know I can do this for each individual site using the hosts file found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ Unfortunately the Windows hosts file doesn't work with wildcards! I don't have a dedicated local DNS server, but I'd like a system that redirects *.dev to my server without the need to open and edit the Windows hosts file every time. How do sites like blogger store virtual hosts? I know that you can have virtual hosts in app servers like tomcat and apache. Most of the solutions I know of require you to list the vhosts in a text file which, I understand, requires tomcat/apache to be restarted. So my questions are two: - Is there any way to store this information in a database? I've seen an apache module somebody wrote, but a large-scale solution would require that information to be cached because it changes so seldom. - If it is stored in text files (perhaps automatically copied there from database contents), do all the servers have to be restarted? And doesn't that take a long time, during which the servers are unavailable? I cannot see a system like blogger.com having its servers being constantly taken down and back up.

If you use Access to create a database, and a web form for input is it easy to host it on a website? I am just trying to find the easiest, idiot proof way of creating a webpage to view and enter data in one basic table. Virtual host setup question Linux? I have setup a virtual domain setup on my server but on firefox for mac it requires that I have WWW as a prefix or it points to another virtual host if I don't but only on firefox for mac.
