Web Server? I am on a project in my EAST Class in my school that requires me to make a web server to put web sites made by other students on the internet. What is an easy and free/cheap way to setup a computer to do that?
What is the EASIEST way to setup a Linux Web Server? I have a need to host some web sites, and have been trying to do so with an evaluation copy of Server 2k3. And while I have been able to get more than a few simple sites up, I am having trouble doing anything advanced, like setting up a simple in and out bound mail server, or getting PHP scripts to run. One option I am considering is seeing if there is a SIMPLE (meaning totally newby friendly) Linux build that might work. Does anyone have a recommendation on a Linux build that would include a web server, mail server and php compiler (or whatever the appropriate term is) that someone who has NEVER used linux could install, configure through some sort of reasonable "wizard," plug source files into and then go from there? Thanks in advance!
What do you recommend for a free and large web server? Hi, I already have a website but unfortunately it limits me to only 4 MB disk space. I have several audio files (of my radio shows that take up hundreds of all together MB) and I want to upload them to the site but can't because of the space. So I figure I could just upload these files on a larger server and then put a http link on my other website that would direct them to the file so they can download it. What web server do you recommend so I can do this? If you don't think there are any large, free servers out there, what do you think I should do? Should I just compress my files? Would that work in the first place? What free software would you recommend if I should do that? Much thanks in advance.

How can I find out what operating system is running on a remote web server? I'm running desktop Linux on my home computer, and I would like to know of a program I could use to find out the operating system of a remote web server. Is this possible? I know that web servers have access to information about the operating systems of client machines that view their website, but does something similar happen in reverse? The protocol is HTTP.
How can I record audio directly from the browser to the web server? For a podcasting application, I'd like my web server to be able to receive audio straight from the browser. Something like a "Push to talk" button. It seems it's possible to do this with Flash. Is there any other way? With Flash, do I need to buy a Macromedia server licence, or are there alternatives to have Flash on the browser talk to my server?
What is the best way to host a million images on a web server? I have a web site where members can sign up and upload images. Thinking large scale, say I have 100,000 members and each one uploads 100 images (averaging 1mb per image). That would require roughly 10,000 gigabytes of storage. What is the best way to set up a server(s) to host something of this scale?
How do I find out if I have a Linux Web Server or not? Checking the Properties of My Computer shows: System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2. I found out that I can have a Windows XP Operating System as well as a Linux Operating System but I don't know if this also determines my web server or not and how to determine whether I have a Linux Web Server or not. First: The reason why I need to find out this answer is that I was told in answer to another Yahoo question about how to install a redirect: "If you have a Linux Web server, then do this..." Secondly: Microsoft Help says "NOTE: Windows XP and Linux can coexist on the same computer. For additional information, refer to your Linux documentation." Well, I know I have windows. I don't know if I don't have Linux. One problem is that I don't know where to find my Linux documentation--isn't there some place on my computer where I should be able to look this data up?
How hard is it to create a web server? I have a few computers sitting around that do little more than serve music. I create several web sites a month that will only receive a few hits a day. Is it relatively simple and cost effective to create a web hosting server that uses PHP? If so, can you point me to a link that would show me how to set it up.
How do I set up my own web server using Ubuntu Linux? I'm sick of having to spend my hard earned cash on renting 60 gb of a hard drive on someone else's computer! I've got a server ready to have Ubuntu installed, but I don't know where to begin with setting it up as a web server What do I do? Is there any security software that I need? (Though I suppose that's a silly question because Linux is so secure anyway) I know that many ISP's don't like you uploading tonnes of data, but I never get all that much traffic anyway. If I do start getting lots of traffic, I'll change ISP!
How do I secure my web server using a certificate on a USB key? I have a web server running IIS 6 (sorry, UNIX guys!). I'd like to secure the access of my site to only some users. In my wildest dreams, I'd like my users to have a USB key with a key/certificate on it, then they could plug it in any PC and, if the certificate is not blacklisted or expired, the users could access my site. Otherwise, it would be blocked. I'd like the user interaction to be minimal, from the time they plug in the USB key. So, I'd like to avoid any configuration on the part of the users. Ideally, the solution should work on both Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox. Any ideas how I could make this happen? Thank you in advance for the detailed steps!
How can I make my own dedicated web server? Hi, I'm currently trying to convert an altered (suped up) IBM Aptiva which was originally made for windows 98 into a web server. I would like to use this to host several sites. I'm trying to choose between either windows server 2003 or linux. Anybody have any advice?
How so I setup a web server with two lines? I currently have a web server connected via T1. I also have a backup DSL line in case the T1 goes down for temporary use. The DNS points to, for example, 1.1.1.1 but if the T1 goes down, I would like it to go to 2.2.2.2 which would be the DSL line. How would I be able to accomplish this? Thanks.

How can I use my web server to host other websites? I'm a computer engineer so spare the detailed code (registrations and logins) but please point me in the correct direction. I want to create a web server (with very very large disk space of course) and serve others, similar to like 1and1.com hosting or yahoo.com hosting or godaddy.com. How can I do this?
How to allow Internet user to connect to IIS home web server? I installed Internet Information Service (IIS) on my home PC and the web service is running successfully when I access http://127.0.0.1 or http://localhost. But I can't access it using my public IP address, of course I can access it through internal private address. I am using a 2wire 2700HG model and configure port forwarding which is port 80 but to no avail. However FTP server is successful through port 21 setting, can anyone tell me what's the problem? I am in Singapore using ISP Singnet, is it that my ISP blocks this cability?
Link bars in Frontpage showing in offline browser preview but not on live site after uploading to web server? I do have Frontpage extensions enabled on the server. The site has page banners, link bars and a discussion forum and only the discussion forum works on the live site. So it seems that the Frontpage extensions do work, but not for the link bar and the page banner. When I open the live site (remotely) in Frontpage, it says in the location where the link bar should be something like: "add page to navigation structure to show linkbar" whereas it works perfectly well offline (locally) and I copied the entire file structure over to the web server. Do I have to re-create the navigation structure remotely? Is that normal? My ISP is 1and1 and I have Linux hosting.

How can I redirect a domain name to a directory on my web server? Hi, I have a web server with a number of different domain names registered. I'd like to re-direct domains like this: www.domain1.com goes to index1.php www.domain2.com goes to /directory/index2.php etc. But I want www.domain2.com to appear as: www.domain2.com/index2.php not: www.domain2.com/directory/index2.php I can edit the .htaccess file and have PHP installed and running... Any solutions? Thanks.
Which processor is a better choice for a web server? I am purchasing a web application server for our company. There are two processors I am trying to decide on: Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 5050, 2x2MB Cache, 3.00GHz, 667MHz FSB or.... Dual Core Intel® Xeon® 5130, 4MB Cache, 2.00GHz, 1333MHz FSB The Xeon 5130 is a newer model, with higher FSB speed (1333MHz) than the 5050 Xeon, but the 5050 has a higher overall clock speed, 3Ghz. Which is better? The 5130 model will cost about $245 more, but doesn't the faster clock speed on the 5050 mean it's faster?
