Http Intranet Web Server Knowledge Base
What's the URL of another server on the same intranet if it is not http://...? There is a server called web in the intranet and everything in this server can be view through web browser by typing http:// and then the rest of the path file, but what if I want to go and link something that is not in the web server but somewhere else. Tried using file:///mappedNetworkDrive, but what if the server is not mapped on your network drive. What is the appropriate link?
http to https reverse proxy? I am looking for a way to proxy an intranet http server to the Internet over https. In this way, I'd like to watch a network camera connected to my intranet from outside of a firewall securely. I have been using an Apache server on the firewall for http-to-http and https-to-https proxying for accessing intranet web sources, but I am not successful in http-to-https proxying. Thanks.
Is IIS and ASP.NET only for making and accessing local/intranet web servers? Please read....? I'm running Windows XP Professional. I'm pretty new when it comes to setting up and configuring servers. I'm setting up ACT by Sage Premium for Web for my boss, which is a customer database program. When everything is said and done, its supposed to allow you to type in an IP or domain and access the program and information database from a computer acting as a web server. I've opened port 80 on both my router and windows firewall, installed and somewhat configured IIS, SQL and ASP.net, made 3 impersonation accounts etc. I forgot to mention that my IP is not static (I'll be using DynDNS). Anyway, I made a small html file to test access to the host computer web server and put it the webroot. When I type in my public IP (http://99.35.144.###) it doesn't connect to my server or the html page like I thought it should. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks! When I run http://localhost it says my page is now running and gives me the default welcome screen. it was named mytestfile.html I renamed it both home.htm and default.htm and nothing happened. UPPDATE: Figured it out! I was trying to access the server from inside the router. Once I used an outside computer it worked fine.
How to configure Web Hosting in cent OS BlueQuartz? I created a web server in virtual machine with BlueQuartz OS. From intranet I am able to get access to the web server as well as FTP server. From Internet I can get access only to the FTP and not to the web site. I have forwarded port 80 and 21 in my router but still I am not able to access my site through http. Any help would be appreciated Plz.....................?
Cisco Extended ACL CCNA help *please*? =) Thanks!? This is a CCNA type question. 2 is the one I primarily need help with. 1) The company has an intranet Web server host that all systems can reach at IP address 172.16.0.1 with only HTTP access. No other protocols will be permitted to this site. 2) The company also has a server pool in the 209.0.0.0/24 network. The server pool addresses are divided in half. The servers in the upper half of the address range are reachable only by management hosts (200.200.3.75- 78/240). The servers in upper half of the address rnage are not reachable by production hosts using all IP protocols (200.200.3.66- 74/240) using all possible IP protocols. The servers should not be accessible by any other hosts. 3) The company has discovered an Internet Web server at 198.0.0.1 that is known to contain viruses. All hosts must be banned. All needs to be applied to one ACL. So far- 1)access-list 101 permit ip 200.200.3.0 0.0.0.25 172.16.0.1 0.0.0.25 eq 80 2) ? 3) access-list 101 deny ip any host 198.0.0.1
"AMD Athlon 64 X2" CPU or Pentium 4 2.8 for home based intranet? Would the "AMD Athlon 64 X2" dual core processor be faster at file serving than a P4 2.8GHZ CPU? I'm just not sure when the 2nd processor would "kick in" with regard to file sharing/serving. Does the server software affect speed as well, or does the software depend on the CPU speed? I'll be using this server software: Abyss Web Server X1 (free version - see http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/ ). Thanks for any knowledgeable answers! :) NOTICE: The link is here for anyone that needs to refer to my intended software need/usage, I am NOT affiliated with the software company nor it's affiliates, in other words, the link is NOT spam! How can I publish an RSS feed from within a company intranet? I've set up an in-house blog on my company's intranet. The blog's pages are accessbile to employees on the company network or over our VPN at a certain address - say http://10.0.1.127/myblog/index.php I'm looking for a feed reader that will access the RSS feeds generated by the blog pages - these are also hosted at a similar address, say http://10.0.1.127/myblog/index.php?feed=rss1 So far I've tried Google Reader (a web-based service), rssfwd (an RSS to email service) and Illumio (a desktop-based reader). Obviously Google and rssfwd aren't able to get to the feeds directly from their own servers, but I would have thought that the desktop-based reader ought to be able to do this, as my machine is logged onto the company network. So, can anyone suggest either: 1) a desktop- or web-based feed reader that is likely to be able to reach these feeds, or 2) an elegant workaround (using an aggregator, having the blog publish feeds to a public server instead, etc.) Thanks in advance, chrss
Database SQL Question? I am trying to get my homework done and have a question on a portion. First I am doing this in MS Access, the part I don't get is: selecting the right datatypes as outlined in the post titled 'Data Types in Access, Oracle and SQL Server" esepcially regarding the use of the NUMBER datatype. Field data types available in Access (MDB) Note The information in this topic applies only to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb). The following list summarizes all the field data types (field data type: A characteristic of a field that determines what kind of data it can store. For example, a field whose data type is Text can store data consisting of either text or number characters, but a Number field can store only numerical data.) available in Microsoft Access, their uses, and their storage sizes. Text Use for text or combinations of text and numbers, such as addresses, or for numbers that do not require calculations, such as phone numbers, part numbers, or postal codes. Stores up to 255 characters. The FieldSize property controls the maximum number of characters that can be entered. Memo Use for lengthy text and numbers, such as notes or descriptions. Stores up to 63,999 characters. Number Use for data to be included in mathematical calculations, except calculations involving money (use Currency type). Stores 1, 2, 4, or 8 bytes; stores 16 bytes for Replication ID (GUID). The FieldSize property defines the specific Number type. Date/Time Use for dates and times. Stores 8 bytes. Currency Use for currency values and to prevent rounding off during calculations. Stores 8 bytes. AutoNumber Use for unique sequential (incrementing by 1) or random numbers that are automatically inserted when a record is added. Stores 4 bytes; stores 16 bytes for Replication ID (GUID). Yes/No Use for data that can be only one of two possible values, such as Yes/No, True/False, On/Off. Null (Null: A value you can enter in a field or use in expressions or queries to indicate missing or unknown data. In Visual Basic, the Null keyword indicates a Null value. Some fields, such as primary key fields, can't contain Null.) values are not allowed. Stores 1 bit. OLE Object Use for OLE objects (such as Microsoft Word documents, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, pictures, sounds, or other binary data) that were created in other programs using the OLE (OLE: A program-integration technology that you can use to share information between programs. All Office programs support OLE, so you can share information through linked and embedded objects.) protocol. Stores up to 1 gigabyte (limited by disk space). Hyperlink Use for hyperlinks (hyperlink: Colored and underlined text or a graphic that you click to go to a file, a location in a file, a Web page on the World Wide Web, or a Web page on an intranet. Hyperlinks can also go to newsgroups and to Gopher, Telnet, and FTP sites.). A hyperlink can be a UNC path (universal naming convention (UNC): A naming convention for files that provides a machine-independent means of locating the file. Rather than specifying a drive letter and path, a UNC name uses the syntax \\server\share\path\filename.) or a URL (Uniform Resource Locator (URL): An address that specifies a protocol (such as HTTP or FTP) and a location of an object, document, World Wide Web page, or other destination on the Internet or an intranet, for example: http://www.microsoft.com/.). Stores up to 2048 characters. Lookup Wizard Use to create a field that allows you to choose a value from another table or from a list of values using a combo box—-choosing this option in the data type list starts a wizard to define this for you. Requires the same storage size as the primary key (primary key: One or more fields (columns) whose values uniquely identify each record in a table. A primary key cannot allow Null values and must always have a unique index. A primary key is used to relate a table to foreign keys in other tables.) that corresponds to the Lookup field (Lookup field: A field, used on a form or report in an Access database, that either displays a list of values retrieved from a table or query, or stores a static set of values.)—-typically 4 bytes.

PRIVATE blog software for intranet recommendations? Does anyone have any suggestions for some good blogging software that can be placed on a company intranet? Web server supports ASP.NET, and the software should offer the option for customizing the design. Open source software would be preferred. Is there one where only certain people on the company intranet would have access to it? In other words, is it possible to set it up so that only, for example, the accounting department could access it, or particular project team members? Ideally, someone's ability to access the blog would be determined based on their login credentials when logging onto their computers to access the network. Then, only people who are allowed to access can open/see/access the link to the blog. Is this possible? If we install Apache + PHP, what software would then be available? The option to make the blog private for specific team members to see is of particular importance. Is this something that can be done only particular blogging software or is there a workaround regardless of the software used?
How do i set up a Web / File / Printer Server? Here's the hardware: - Core2Duo Pc with 2 SATA HD in RAID mode - Wireless N Router + Access Point - USB Printer OS and software: - Xubuntu Linux I don't want the server to have an internet connection. It will be a home Intranet server. There will be 2 or 3 pcs connecting to it via the wireless router. I need it as a file storage and it will host a php based software supported by a classic AMP config. A usb printer is connected to the server and will be shared by the 3 computers. My major concern is about the printer server, cause i've searched the web and just found tutorials starting from a router or switch with a built in printer server and most of them based on windows platform. Any idea?
Is there an open source web server that I can install in my laptop to run a site I'm building w/ FrontPage'03? Is there an open source Web Server software that I can download or install in my laptop to run and test a website I'm building with Frontpage 2003 before I would finally publish it with any server host vendor? My Operating System is Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 2. I often get a this message..."You have submitted a form or followed a link to a page that requires a web server and the FrontPage Server Extensions to function properly." I need all the expert advise I could get. And please also refer a reliable support group; my future projects after this are company intranets and student portals (elearning website); simple and efficient (outsourcing is also an option provided it comes with very competitive price). Thanks in advance to all of you!

How do I create a virtual drive with Apache? I want to point Links on my web page to a file server.? I have a web page set up but with Firefox people can't open file:// links. with IE it works fine. I am trying to set up a virtual drive as you do in IIS to create a drive that points to the server so people can open files from the web browser. This is an Intranet (business) webpage so I'm not worried that people can get to the file server....that's precisely what I want. Guess I should mention that I know very little about apache..just installed it and put my pages in the htdocs folder. Thanks for any help in advance. I appreciate the answer but what I'm really looking for is a way to point weblinks to files on the file server...this can be done in IIS by creating a virtual drive i.e. a D:\ drive and "virtually mapping" the links to it. Is there a way to do this with apache?
How do I host Infopath 2007 browser enabled forms in IIS server? I have created the from using Infopath 2007 and is browser enabled. I also have an IIS server setup for me. What uses less resources - Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000? I have a home brew web server (made for only at-home web use... it's an Intranet site for my house network) and I have both Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 Server official discs. The specs of the server are: * 64MB RAM * 133 MHz Processor * 8GB HDD * 10/100 Mbps LAN/Ethernet Card Would Windows 2000 Professional (with IIS) use more or less resources than Windows 2000 Server? I want to use the least resources possible, since the specs above aren't really too good... By the way, I'm not asking for "upgrade to xp" answers or anything... Because if you say that, you have no technical knowledge at all. (Winxp won't even boot correctly with the specs above). **update** according to your answers, W2K pro is the way to go, that's established. But would windows 2000 Pro serve pages up faster than 2k Serv? and which one would be better if i was to leave the computer/server on for extended lengths... around half a year or so at a time? (haha it probably wont stay up that long... really, about every month a reboot). which one would be better considering i don't want to fill up a paging file or clog up my ram because the machine's been on...? ok... that wasn't very clear... in quick words, which one will fill up the RAM/Paging File slower so i have more speed? *by the way, i quick tested Windows 2000 server on a virtual machine with 64MB ram and it works quite smooth... just as smooth as 2k Pro does* i'm looking for fastest client response times... like... y'know... the one that pulls the page up fastest. (oh, and I'll be serving a game on another machine, same specs, it'll be running a command line server window) what's better for that? wait, another update... which one will use less background/system processes so I can let the machine focus on serving? I think that's what i was trying to say before... hahah ****ADD-ON!**** if i had a machine with better specs, would windows 2000 server be more useful than windows 2000 professional? i just found some better parts lying around and i now have: * 256MB RAM * 1.5 GHz proc. * ~30GB HDD * 10/100 Ethernet adapter Should i use windows 2000 pro or win 2000 serv on that machine? I want to use that to host a game (which shows up on the server as a command prompt window, but clients connect with a java GUI window)... or maybe I'll use that one for the website... I'm not sure. bottom line - which one, pro or serv, is better for that machine? (which is more useful)?
We are developing an information system to capture client information. Which database should we use? It should be secure. It should be scalable. It will be located on our in-house server. Each of 10 employees computers are connected to the server. An intranet will host a web site that will connect the employees to the database. This internal web site will be how information is stored on, processed and retrieved from the database. Our external web site will be hosted on the same server. The external web site will be used by clients and will pull certain information from the database. We also need mail-merge functionality. Information from the database needs to populate word document templates. We currently use an ACT! database to fullfill this need and an access database for all other information. Our server and all computers run on Windows. I've been leaning towards mySQL however I'm not sure how mail-merge and mySQL relate. I am the least knowledgable about mail-merge. However, the ability to have stored information populate certain documents is imperative.
Need help setting up a local intranet backup site.? Hi Im creating a home intranet web site with the base intent of allowing other systems on my network to install software directly from my "server." Example: Computer 1 is the server while Computer 2 was just formatted. Instead of swapping discs or trying to locate programs through the "My Network" I want to simply open an internet explorer web site (Intranet) and be able to install the software from the other system. Any ideas on how I might go about this? I got the site working and simple one file software works however if I try to install say Nero or anything else with multiple files it generally will not work. Some software even recognizes that Im trying to install from a network and refuses to run. Also I have an issue with it taking FOREVER sometimes to run a program. Please help! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Setting up Intranet in an office? I have to set up an intranet for a small business. We have two offices that are connected by a leased line. I need to set up an intranet that the offices can use to share a database. This database has to be on a dedicated server computer that can be updated by either office. This database has to be accessible by both offices via the intranet. We currently have an intranet set up with a web application that is very inefficient. I want to upgrade to a dedicated server to do this. Is there a way to do this? I also need the database to be accessible to both offices, the database editable by both offices. Hardware and software tips are much appreciated Thank you guys!
How can host ASP pages on tomcat? I have an intranet of my department which we are planning to build in ASP. The server we would given to host it would be a linux box. I want to know if there is any way I can host ASP files on Apache without incurring extra cost (like using some other free web server for linux or putting support for ASP on apache).
I'm having a problem with a certain page after the files moved to new server? A few weeks ago I had to move a website that served as my boss's company intranet to a new server. I copied all of the files over using an FTP program. I thought all was fine at first. However, there are a few pages that are saved as .cgi files that won't open properly in any browser - whenever I try to open up the page, all I get is script (they worked fine on the previous server). I contacted the guy who originally installed the intranet on the old server and he said that it was probably a problem with the installation (or lack their of) of perl scripts on the server. He said that he would work on fixing it, but it's been almost 4 weeks with nothing to done and my boss is getting a little impatient. Can anyone help me with this? My boss is actually my best friend's dad and he gave me the job to help build up my resume and learn about these kinds of things since this is what I want to do for a living. The server is a windows server and the web host told me that the perl scripts are run strictly from the cgi-bin. I tried to CHMOD the files in my FTP program, but there was no option for me to do so. Hi, I'm in the process of making a basic intranet site for our school network and I would like to.............? Send a ping command to our email server and web server then display the results on the home page, e.g. "Server is up" or "Server is down". I have very little (next to none) experience in php and so am looking for a simple piece of code to achieve this. Is it simple? Also, I'm not bad at animating in flash so I thought it would be cool to have indicators like an ECG to represent on/off status, would it be easy to achieve the same result using Actionscript? Thanks in advance.
Need help on creating an intranet... Please help!? Hi everyone! I have a functioning home network with LAN and wireless computers. They have a Shared Files area where I store shared files. I do not have a server computer on this network - instead, it is just a peer-to-peer network. I have created an intranet on Frontpage, but don't know HOW and WHERE to save it, to allow all computers to access it. I DON'T WANT TO PUBLISH THE INTRANET TO THE WEB, but just want my networked computers to view the intranet. Please help me on how to save the intranet and how all computers can access it. SOME EXTRA INFO: I have a XP Desktop and a VISTA laptop. They all have static IP addresses. Please provide links to the web server software please!
Intranet services help!!!? Hi there! I have created a cool new home intranet with things like images of the family, things to do and notes. I now think that I want to add two extra functions on my intranet which is hosted on a Quick and Easy Mail Server; - I want to add ACCESS TO FILES AND DOCUMENTS. How can I save documents such as homework files onto the intranet? How can they be linked to and where should I save them to allow the network to use them? - I would also like a private mail service for the family. How can I add this software? What software do I need to download? How is it put onto the intranet. NB: My intranet was created with WEB PAGE MAKER and is hosted using the Q&E MAIL SERVER. Please help me by telling me how I can add the above two features onto my intranet.
Need MIME type for playing .wrf file? I have a Web Ex recording on a web server --on the intranet. When someone clicks its link off a web page -- it should automatically get the Web Ex player to play it for those who already have it. When clicked, the link asks the user to open or save. Instead, I need it to open up the Web Ex player automatically. It works OK if I play it from my desktop. I tried adjusting the MIME type on the web server but I am not sure what MIME type this .wrf file needs. 'Application/octet-stream' MIME type does not help. The WebEx player usually is in the C drive Program Files/Web Ex/Record Playback/At Author.exe. I can not have individual users associate wrf file with this player since this will be placed on the intranet of my company. Help! MB

SLC_Corrado, please help me with ACL 101? I appreciated you helped me previously. Thank you very much but this one I really need your help with ACL 101 please. Hosts 10.1.50.1 through 10.1.50.63 are not allowed web access to the Intranet server at 10.1.80.16. All other access is allowed. Configure the ACL on the appropriate router, and use ACL number 101. This is what I did: HQ(config)#access-list 101 deny tcp 10.1.50.1 0.0.0.63 10.1.80.16 0.0.0.255 eq www HQ(config)#access-list 101 permit ip any any But I think something is not right. Something is missing. I would appreciate your help. Thank you.

Can I point a domain name to one IP for serving web pages and another IP for managing e-mail? ... and how? I'm helping a company set up a new website... being a design guy... this technical stuff sometimes baffles me.... though I think this could be resolved using DNS (A and MX records). The company has a domain name established which handles their e-mail... and may connect to their an intranet. We registered a new domain name and are hosting it with a different company... we want to redirect the original domain name to the new one (for web pages only). We still want mail routed through the other server and do not want to interrupt the intranet. firstDomain.com = points to HostCompanyOne, server hosts e-mail, no physical website, points to internal network, has several IP's secondDomain = points to HostCompanyTwo, serves website, no e-mail - Could this be done in DNS? - Where does the redirecting or pointing take place (Registrar, HostCompanyOne, etc)? - Anything I might be overlooking ... potential issues? - Thoughts or ideas? your expertice is appreciated... thanks
Code to Run When Session Expires in Tomcat? I'm trying to code up a servlet for my company's intranet that keeps track of which people are online using the site. The problem is that when people forget to click "log out" and just close the browser (which they often do) the web site continues to think that they're logged in. Now, we're using a Tomcat web server, and I know it has a notion of user sessions - and these sessions expire after a certain amount of time (I think 30 minutes). I poked around the documentation, and didn't turn up any information on how to get code to run automatically when sessions expire. Is this even possible? If so, how do you do it? Thanks!
Pay for a Front-End Web Developer??? SALARY AND HOURLY!? This full-time person will be responsible for the upkeep and continual improvement of several Web sites on both the internet and our intranet. The ideal candidate must have the ability to create web graphics and interfaces and the skills to convert those to valid XHTML and CSS. This person will work with web vendors and internal technology staff; we are seeking a candidate who can champion good design, standards, web hierarchy and user experience. In addition, we are looking for someone with the proven ability to create and post interactive content that will keep our users engaged as we seek to communicate our mission to the public. The successful candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of HTML, XHTML and CSS and one year web development experience. Experience with Photoshop and Illustrator is a plus. Viable candidates should already posses some knowledge of JavaScript, Flash and video editing software. Any experience with server-side scripting languages is a plus.Sal. and hour? In oklahoma, what would you think would be the salary and hourly wages for this type of job?
Changing MySQL database location (PHPbb)? I currently have a PHPBB bulletin board running on our Intranet. However the MySQL database is hosted on a web server. I want to stop using the paid SQL hosting and host the database locally. What is the best way of moving the database? Also how would I go about changing the PHPBB settings to look to a different location for the database? Many Thanks!! I am using Apache webserver
JavaScript question? How can I access environment variables from the JavaScript interpreter in Iceweasel / Firefox (or Konqueror)? I'm writing a web application for deployment on an intranet in an all-Linux environment. Since users already have to login to their own PCs, $LOGNAME will be set to the user's login name and $HOME will be set to the path to the user's home folder. So how, within JavaScript, do I refer to environment variables set on the client's machine? (I guess they are properties of some global object.) NB. %ENV in Perl (and $_ENV in PHP) are referring to environment variables set up on the *server* side. This is *not* what I want! I want the environment variables on the *client* side, i.e. the machine where the browser is running. And preferably without having to install a web server on the client machines or recompile the browser (though there are enough machines and they're a similar enough architecture that this would be acceptable if all else fails). I was really hoping to be able to avoid using Java ..... It'd be less bother to put a simple web server on each of the client machines and have a bit of JS do an XMLHttpRequest to find out where it's running (a simple bit of Bash scripting would do fine ..... I could even probably implement the whole thing in a shell script by cunning use of netcat). Doing it that way would keep everything Free too.
how to access an asp.net application via internet explorer in an intranet? hi, I am developing a web site with 2 pages in asp.net.the first page requesting a username and pass and then second page will show some information about the logged in user from sql server 2000. Trying to set up a team site with Microsoft Office 2000 on Windows XP? Trying to set up a team site with Microsoft Office 2000 Professional on Windows XP and I keep reading that Office server exchange is necessary, but I cant find the install download for it, or actual documentation about the product. Right now we use a online file folder storage area and have a web site with hosted storage space. Is this the same, meaning would the exchange server be a better method of having a collaborated team site? With our online file folder we just hyperlink everything. Could anybody give me suggestions of the best, most effective way of organizing a company intranet site?
How do I setup a web server from home? Ok the title is a little misleading... I have installed a WAMP server at home and port forwarded the web server on my wireless router. Unfortunately I have a dynamic IP address and in the past have used NO-IP client to automatically update my IP to a DNS? This had worked fine on IIS6 but as you already know I am using apache. I can only seem to at least get a connection by typing in my computer name into the web browser which I guess suggests is only working as an intranet page? Anyhow when I type my computer name in I get this apache message: "You don't have permission to access / on this server." I need to get a website up and running here and I am all out of ideas I must stress the aim is internet access not intranet
Problem with XP and Vista drive-mapping? I'd like to map the C: of my XP laptop to my Vista desktop. I've done this before, but never with a wireless router. netstat -e shows nothing and ipconfig only shows my internet ip, not my intranet ip. It's set-up DHCP. I am hosting a web server, but I didn't think I'd expose my computer's true IP address to the world... is this what's happened? If not, how do I find my intranet IP address? I just want to make sure I can connect to my laptop which is 192.168.0.64 Thanks in advance.

What's the best tool for a free, hosted, private wiki? I'm looking for a free, hosted, wiki solution to host my small company's intranet site. There is sensative details in there so it can't be available to the public (I'd like it password protected to read it). I've been looking around and trying a few applications and I love WetPaint overall, but they don't offer privacy and seem to have no interest in offering that option. PBWiki is ok, but I need something very simple, and it also needs to be able to place server side include code in there and PBwiki just comments out all that code, so it's useless. What else is out there that you guys would recommend? It needs to be: - Password protected for everything (No one should be able to read it and edit it unless they have the password) - Free, or very cheap - Hosted on the Web - Able to handle HTML code such as pasting server side includes without making them disappear - Incredibly easy to use. (My staff isn't the most technically skilled, nor am I.) Thanks for your help Thanks for telling me not to do what I'm asking how to do. I'm obviously not hosting ultra-sensative information, we just need somewhere everyone can collaborate together on internal rules/projects. Does anyone have a real solution?
I need an HTML code like this page.? I need an HTML code that will create a message board like this Yahoo Answers page. The codes that I have found direct the user to hit submit that send an email to the administrator. Which would be fine except that it grabs our old email server which we no longer use. There is not an option in IE or Mozilla that would use the server we now use (Microsoft Outlook, OL Express, etc…) I do not need to be notified when someone post a message. I just want a simple page that allows employees to keep record of their communication with other companies and have it posted on our intranet. If there is a standard form that could be displayed (company name, submitters name, etc) that would be even better. I am not a programmer of any sort. I’m not even in the IT department. I created and maintain our 'intranet' with Microsoft Web Expression. I am able to decipher most 'computer talk’ but the simpler the better. Your assistance and direction is very appreciated. ~ Disc Golf or Bust
Should I go with ASP.NET or go with the LAMP/XAMPP stack? I've been programming .NET for the last seven years, but only desktop apps and intranet databases. Now I need to branch out into web programming. Maybe ASP.NET and SQL Server Express is the way to go since I already know .NET, but I keep hearing that PHP and MySQL are also good options. What say ye?

How do you add peer-to-peer DNS in a client/server setup? So say you have a few pcs and a server on a LAN and have server 2003 on your server and set this server and all the pcs a domain name, xxxxx.com so that all pcs in this LAN can access the resources on the server via domain name. Firstly i assume that each PC can still access all the other pcs through my network places without having to "go through" the server, IF the server set riights to do this??, this means that each pc STILL has a workgroup name which allows you do to this?? But say each pc has a web server running on it(INTRANET) how do you access from pc to pc through a domain name, i guess each pc would have to have its own unique domain name to do this(different from the domain controllers name). SO....the domain controllers name xxxx.com allows the server to control each pc that has this domain name set as well, each pc still has a workgroup name which allows them to access other pcs without having to go through the server domain system, but if each c has a web server running on it and yuo wanted to call say pc1 yyyyy.com and access pc1 locally through a web browser by navigating to yyyyyyyy.com how to you set up DNS to convert yyyy.com in http://192.168.0.50 or what that pcs ip was?? confusing??
Database using SQL? ? I deal with our company's employee share plans. There are a number of plans that are currently in various Excel spreadsheets. I would like to automate this as much as possible but also allow employees to be able to log on/in using their own passwords through the intranet or some sort of web portal so they can access their own holdings and see the value of their holdings etc. Would an SQL hosted on the company's server enable the above? Would I be able to do some sort of a web interface that could extract the data from the SQL database? If no to the above, is there anything else I might explore that could achieve the above? Thanks in advance for any help.

Active Directory. How can I get the user id? Everybody in my office signs on to their computers using an active directory name and password. Yet on my virtual server (with account on active directory) my .net c# application fails. I have tried everything. I can't even get their user id using the many different combinations of identity, servervariables etc from LDAP. Setting windows authentication fails, setting anonymous won't give me their user id with any type of request. I have tried all of the logical methods and settings in the web.config, impersonate=true, impersonate=false. When I use anonymous login, I can't get any information about them. If I use windows integrated login it fails or a login dialog box pops up requesting username and password. This is all on an intranet site. Ironically, my coworker who uses Coldfusion, has no problem getting information from LDAP and detecting userid. What could be wrong?
Verizon Wireless Data Plans - P2P File Sharing?? Verizon Wireless has a stipulation for their Data Plans including Internet for BlackBerry, Broadband Access, etc. that states the following: Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio/video programming/games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a month. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term. Anyone know if they strictly monitor P2P file sharing? Or do they only look into it if you’ve gone over 5GB?
Intranet Question? Hi, I have set up an Intranet, but I can only access it on the PC I made it with, does anybody know how I can share it with other Computers in my home network. I am using Apache web server if that helps.
Question about Uninterruptible Power Supply...? Okay, here's the scenario: at my work we have 10 servers. 4 servers are used for business database (finances, inventory, payroll etc). 2 servers are used for general file sharing, 3 servers are used for email and 1 server is for the company website and intranet. What is a good UPS that I could get to protect our system? We live in an area with frequent thunderstorms where the power goes down a lot. Is there a good web site to visit? All the info that helps is greatly appreciated.. thanks!
