Wilcard DNS (similar to hosts file) in Windows without a local dedicated DNS server...? I have a local test server running Apache2 with virtual hosting setup correctly. I'd like to set up a system so that *.dev is redirected to my testing server at 192.168.0.4 I know I can do this for each individual site using the hosts file found in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ Unfortunately the Windows hosts file doesn't work with wildcards! I don't have a dedicated local DNS server, but I'd like a system that redirects *.dev to my server without the need to open and edit the Windows hosts file every time. Do you know how this can be achieved? Thanks in advance.

Question regarding hosting your own web server? Hi I just finished 2 websites right now, and I was thinking of hosting my own web and database servers. I have an extra computer at home, which will serve as the dedicated server, and will run windows server 2003. I have the business plan with my isp, so i am allowed to host servers, but my upload speed is only 800kbps With that connection speed, suppose 10 users are downloading a 800kb page and executing 3 select mysql queries all at the same time, how long will it take for the page to be rendered? Is there a mathematical formula that shows this? What is the maximum number of users that you guys think could be browsing my website at the same time? Is there any books you guys could recommend me viewing before launching the server? Thanks! i.e I have 2gb ram, and 2.4ghz processor
How to successfully host a game server? On every single game (which would be Hidden & Dangerous 2, and Black Hawk Down) I Host a dedicated server to start a clan or a "have fun" server and people join but then it says they disconnected in the dedicated server window. Any idea how to let people join on any server you make on any game?
Let's say I lease a dedicated server from some hosting company.? I use a software app like Virtuozzo or VMWare to create 4 Virtual Machines inside the server. I now have 4 virtual machines in the server, each with its own memory, OS, Windows. Would I be able to log into one of the VMs using remote software, and then - from that machine, browse the internet, go to other websites, download software, and basically do anything that I could do on a regular PC? Part of my trouble in understanding my own question, is that the leased dedicated server would probably not have a monitor attached to it, and I am used to using remote software that lets you see what is happening on the desktop of the computer being accessed. I am trying to figure out what I would see from my computer if I was connecting to one that did not have a monitor. Would I still be able to use my local mouse and keyboard in the environment of the remote server, and would I be able to do what ever I want to accomplish on the VM, despite it's status as a webhost server?
Would a Virtual dedicated server host a World of Warcraft private server? Basically the title. • OS: Windows 2003 Enterprise • RAM: 512 MB • Storage: 10 GB • Bandwidth: 500 GB per month
Ventrilo Server for Windows Vista x64? I'm looking for a 64bit compatible Ventrilo Server that I can host dedicated on my computer running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit but on the www.ventrilo.com website, there is only a 32bit version. Is there a 64bit version of the dedicated server or even will the standard 32bit one on the site work for 64bit as well? Running Service Pack 2 if that helps at all. Also will have to portforward for Netcomm NB6Plus4W Router.
Event 4202 in Event Viewer on Windows server? In the server's event viewer (which we can only get to via Remote Desktop - the server is hosted somewhere on the other side of the country), I keep seeing events 4202 and then 4201 a few seconds later (source tcpip). This happens pretty much every day and sometimes up to 5 or 6 times per day. The site is only down for 5-30 seconds each time, so it is difficult to catch it while happening (plus, I can't since I need it to be connected via Remote Desktop). Everything I have read says this could be either a hardware or a driver issue. Unfortunately, GoDaddy has been no help since it is a dedicated server. I have been working with their advanced support team and they are saying the hardware is fine (because they tested it in a 10 minute window in which this didn't happen). They will not monitor it over the course of a few days. How do I know if it is the network card failing vs bad equipment? How can I prove it is the equipment so I can go back to GoDaddy with a solid argument? Event 4202 (8/27/07 8:14:30 am): The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{3CDCEEFE-C379-4C88-AF9D-E1BE872DB9D4} was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers. Event 4201 (8/27/07 8:14:50 am): The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\TCPIP_{3CDCEEFE-C379-4C88-AF9D-E1BE872DB9D4} was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

Server characteristics for online shop? Hello everybody, If you know, could you tell me which are the most suitable characteristics, when buying windows hosting, for a bookstore shop (selling books, cds, dvds, games, etc), that will use ASP and MS SQL? I'm wondering about disk space, bandwidth, shared hosting, VPS, dedicated server, etc, among other things. I've seen many solutions but would not wish to follow one which is too expensive for the shop needs. The shop will do its business in a country of no more that 15 million people by a rather small company. Thanks in advance.

Windows 2003 Server. Which Zonealarm software? I'm running a hosted 2003 server, which is dedicated, but unmanaged. Anyway, I need to install security s/w on it, and wondered if applying Zonealarm Security Suite 6 would work on this, as it is running Windows 2003 Server (and acts as a webserver, database server, mailserver etc). Please help, as I need to secure this box asap.

How to configure DNS and Windows 2003 web edition? Windows 2003 SMTP server help!? Well I am having a issue with virtual SMTP servers. I am trying to make it so each domain on my windows 2003 box (Virtual dedicated) has its own IP address for sending mail. I setup a virtual SMTP server for each IP and domain but when I send mail through that IP/Domain it will use the servers default IP address to relay the mail out. Do you have any idea how to fix this so each virtual SMTP is sending with its own IP address? Or do you know of a SMTP server I can istall that will let me configure it this way? I have a bunch of domains hosted on a windows box and some clients reqire a dedicatged IP with rDNS for sending emails.
How do I stop an IP from connecting to my gameserver? I'm hosting a counter-strike source dedicated server from my Windows 7 64-bit PC (Bad idea i know...). I have this guy who started attacking my server (network-wise) and causes it to lag. I'm thinking the solution to this is to stop the IP from connecting to my PC (or to a specific port on my PC). How would I do this?
How to setup my own DNS server? I am a newbie in DNS server setup. I have registered more than 100 domain names and now I want to put all of them live. I want to do the DNS hosting by myself rather than using commercial DNS servicem, saying I would like to have DNS servers as: dns1.mydomain.com dns2.mydomain.com Currently "mydomain.com" zone file is hosted in the colocation center's DNS server. I have one dedicated Windows 2000 server with many IPs. I want to use this server as dns1, and dns2 with different IP. This server has been setup as a DNS server. The questions are: 1. how can I setup the dns1.mydomain.com as a reconginzed DNS server? Do I need to register dns1,2.mydomain.com with some agents? if so, where? 2. where I should setup the zone file for dns1.mydomain.com and dns2.mydomain.com--my colocation center DNS server or my own DNS server? 3. After I setup zonefiles for my 100+ domain names and change their name servers in godaddy.com to dns1.mydomain.com, dns2.mydomain.com, I won't have any problem on that. Is it right? Any suggestion and instruction are appreciated! Madhu.
How to structure file server to work with database? I need advise on makeing a good site structure. I have folders that contain unique images uploaded by users that are referenced to database entries. Was told this can cause the server to crash as the number of folders grows. Is there a better solution to this? (it's a windows 2003 server) and mysql server. I believe the DB server is separate from the one hosting the site. Not sure how youtube is structured but it's kinda similiar. there are say 1mln users and so there'd be 1 mln folders on the server each named with the unique user id (as referenced in the users table in DB) so for example tehre are entries Userid 1 2 3 ... And on the server tehre are folders 1 2 3 ... Each folder referencing to the user id. And contains files uploaded by that user. Anyway the questions is that i was told this can cause the server to crash as the number of folders increases. Something about permissions being reset for all the folders once a new one is added. Any opinions? is this a bad structure? how can it be improved? I go with what i can afford atm. So i might switch to a dedicated server but that stil would not solve the problem (if there's any with this) I currently ahve 4000 such folders. Each one has couple of folders inside it and the support staff from the Hosting company said this is causing problems. Please advise.

Windows SBS - Exchange and public MX? Hi there. I'm a senior web developer for a small firm and have been charged with looking at the setup of Windows Small Business Server 2008 and migrating our company email to Exchange. This server will be locally hosted by us. I don't see myself doing this, but I wanted to get a bit of an understanding of how it would work, as my primary experience with email is on *Nix based machines. My question is: How is security handled when the email system is sitting on the same box as something so sensitive as company wide data? Usuually our *Nix based soultions are publically accessable machines either acting as dedicated email servers, or dual purpose web servers. This allows us to simply point any domain MX records to the public IP. But I am a bit worried on how this will be done when the email server is effectively within our private network. Firewall is the first thing that comes to mind. But frankly, our internal data servers have been completely offline in the past. Ta Aaron
Approximate hardware to host a web server? Now for a few more specifics: The approximate traffic I expect is upwards of around 35 simultaneous users, Browsing web pages that are mostly composed of text, but may contain large images. The machine will probably be running Windows, most likely Server 2003. The web server is powered by an Apache web daemon. The machine will also be running the Database service (MySQL) that serves As the web site's back end and a mail server that distributes notifications. (The mail server consumes a rather inconsequential amount of system resources though). In essence, the web site is comparable to a forum with a dedicated mail server. What should I be looking at hardware wise to most efficiently Run the server, both performance and cost wise?
Whose fault is it, me or the client when doing web site? Last month my company started work on this person's website which sells awards and trophies. We made a deal with him. It was a $6200 sale for me. On the contract, he didnt want web hosting with us. Let me back up, he wanted to turn his normal website into a e-Commerce website which requires a dedicated server. We run other client's sites on dedicated servers. He refused saying he has sites all on network solutions website and he doesnt want to change hosts. We asked him various times if he is running windows 2003 and dedicated server. Network solutions we later found out doesnt run either. So about a month, we were working on his site which is bs because he didnt So back and forth we were also trying to figure out his name server because he bought his name server overseas which is stupid. Now I had to keep explaining to him why we cant work on his site because he has to have his name server pointing to us and we need his ftp login information so we can upload files to his site. He is so ignorant of all this. Today I called him saying we need to move his site over to our server because network solution doesnt allow us to install sitegalaxy onto network solution. Then he got upset and said " just give us all the images your company has done for us", " we are done working with you , it seems that you guys are not capable of doing the work we asked "...etc I said I will contact him later today. First off, we did finish his site . We gave him access to his own administrative control panel so he can upload the images and files himself. What we are trying to do is turn his site online by replacing it with a site he has now. What we are going to do is trick him by having a redirect routing pointing to our server when he assumes that hes actually going to his server. So whose fault is this? What have we done wrong? I keep telling him that Im just the messenger for my boss and dont blame me because I dont want this to be added to my resume when i find another job in the future. Btw, is market manager worth mentioning in my resume when it has no experience with networking? 1. He did mention he did not want our hosting. We told him that he needs to get dedicated server. He says why not use our network solution hosting we have? We told him its not dedicated because e-Commerce sites need larger space but he kept ignoring and said just use ours. So we just continued work. 2. He didnt pay all. He said once his site is online then he will pay the remaining cost which is $800. Right now, we are trying to figure out how to get his site up and running using network solution's web host which is 100 gigs. We redirect just to get his site up and running and move on. Its giving everyone on our company headaches. Helpful person , let me explain some things to you . First, go back to college and learn to read. We did check network solutions. They dont offer dedicated servers. Period. We told the client numerous times, he still did not understand. We offered him to let us host it since we use dedicated servers, no budge. No, we want to host the site because we do 24/7 backup, free debugging, free antivirus, if anything happens to the site, we can fix it right away. Thats also our maintence combination. Plus, if he has any graphics that needs changing like vacation notice, we can change it for free, no charge. We did find out what operation system they use. Its linux and windows. I told him that he needs to use windows, he says " we'll i'll buy you a windows pro package"..which doesnt help , its not dedicated. His name server is at oznic which is switzerland. We gotten no response from them about this issue as of yet. We are professional. We have over 60+ clients from americasmart.com
What is faster? 100mbit connection port, or 1000mbps connection port that you only receive 80% of the speed? Okay, so I'm upgrading my dedicated server for a small game I host, a private server of course. Right now these are my specs: Memory 2 GB DDR2 667 Processor Single Processor Quad Core Opteron 1354 - 2.20GHz - 2 x 1MB cache Operating System Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 with R2 (64 bit) VPN Management - Private Network SSL VPN Management Uplink Port Speed 1000 Mbps Public & Private Networks I asked my host how much of the 1000mbps power I get, and they replied I only get around 80% of that speed. Okay so I wanna upgrade! I hate my host they're so overpriced. So I found this host here are the specs: Dual Intel Xeon 3.06Ghz CPUs 4GB RAM, 160 GB SATA Drive Unlimited Bandwidth [100MBit Port] Okay the 100mbit port throws me off because my other host is 800mbps (80%). Which host would be better and no lag for my game? Currently I have no lag except when I reach around 440 players my server starts to lag I'm guessing it is the dedicated server or the port speed I do not know... but I need to upgrade! So which dedicated server should I get and what is the differences between the two internet port speeds, 100mbit and 800mbps, which is faster?
Alternatives to Barracuda Networks Spam and/or Web filters? My company is dumping Barracuda Networks. We still need to block the spam from reaching a users inbox and block a user from surfing inappropriately. All options are on the table: Web based hosted filtering services A rack mounted appliance (like the Barracudas) Software to run on a dedicated Windows Server A VMWare device Reusing an old PC/Server with ready to go linux install Other? The only options not available are installing software on the Exchange Server and installing applications at the desktop level. Tell me what you use and why!! Thanks
Old laptop into home gaming server? Two things. First things first, I took the HD out of a broken computer I own and put it into another computer with a dead HD. Windows won't activate. I'm missing the activation key on both computers, it's rubbed off of the working one, and the other laptop is long gone. Ideas? For the second and most important thing.... I have this laptop I want to turn into a dedicated gaming server for our home network. Primarily just for minecraft. We've got 5 people playing minecraft here and it's too much for the computer I'm using to handle. So, what would I do to make this possible? I want it to host the server and addons. It's powerful enough to do it easily. Do I just install a linux based system? Do I make windows 7 function and install something on it? I'm not sure what to do first, so some guidance would be appreciated.
Network of Dedicated Servers? I am looking for a number of servers (say 40 dedicated machines) each with their own IP, not in the same IP address range, spread around the world. It can be Linux of windows PCs. Does anyone know of a good solution or service for this? I have looked into EC2 from Amazon but they do not have the support I need. Ideas? Note: I am not looking for caching services or exclusively web hosting. The machines should have different external IPs, possibly different locations and also be able to run desktop windows applications. The servers will be working independently. They will also be running a .NET desktop application and another 3rd party windows application and need a connection to the internet. Linux or Mono wont work. Linux would work if the version support vmware.
Is it possible to run a CS:S server through a website, such as "http://google.com/csserver"? I have a yahoo small business website, and it says I have unlimited bandwidth/storage space, and that would be perfect to run a server off of I would guess... I have a proxy on my site at the moment that most of my school uses, because our school blocks every website (including google images) and the site doesn't lag, because it runs at yahoo, and yahoo has some DEDICATED servers. Can I load the pre-made files onto the website through FTP? Is it the same? or would I need to actually get a VPN or whatever it's called, where it hosts an actual operating system (ie windows, linux, etc.) Also, by "CS:S" I meant CounterStrike: Source
AVG Firewall And Windows Firewall Questions? Hey, I have a few questions. I want to host a dedicated Mount&Blade Warband server, however, it seems that no one can find my game on the list. I have port forwarded correctly (I think), added the exceptions to my windows firewall, disabled my AVG Firewall and enabled my windows firewall. The port M&B Warband uses is 7240 and 7241 for steam versions. I have forwarded 7240 and tried with 7241 at the same time as well with no success. The current router here is a DLINK G604T. Is there anything I may have missed in port opening and forwarding?
how powerful of a computer do you need to host a minecraft server? Here is the scenario: Me and about 5 friends wish to play on our own server, At most maybe 10 people on it. It will be running over LAN (will Hamatchi) since the college won't let me set a static ip address on the server. I planned on re-purposing my old (I mean really old desktop) as a dedicated minecraft server. Here are specs: Intel Celeron 1.6GHZ (It's a slightly newer one, though probably equal to the Atom CPU at the same speeds.) 2GB (I believe DDR2) I think it can be boosted to 4GB but not 100% certain 250GB Sata drive 80GB Sata drive that's pretty much all I know. I don't know Linux too much and use other things for minecraft for Windows so it'll be running Windows 7 32-bit (Since I know only having 4GB of ram or more will benefit only the 64-bit.) My question is simply this: Will this pc let me run about 10 users at the same time? If not how many? And will it allow for a little bit of user adds in the future? I really don't want to spend alot of money on repurposing it. So as is for the time being is preferable. I do know some about the minecraft server and know I can limit the user amount. So I can set that. Thanks for all the help. Suggestions, comments, ideas would be great.
I am new to servers ? I'm very new to server platforms, but since a lot of people have been asking me to create web pages for them i figured the easiest way would be to get my own server and host off of it however i'm a newb when it comes to servers and was confused when I was looking for one seeing racks blades and regular ones in desktop cases . I'm unsure of the type I should get but i do know that i would probably be hosting web sites and i made need one if i actually do get my game finished. I do know that any pc has the potential to be a server and i could very well use the one I have but i'd rather a dedicated server. Can anyone advise me of the type of server i should invest in. Also i've been researching on how servers run and i came to find that ubuntu has a server edition but its GUI-less. Would i be able to control everything from my computer even though i primarily run windows (I do have a wubi installation) or say i invested in and used dreamweaver would i be able to upload that to the server and run it, without having to remember a host of terminal lines @ You did what? RTFM! : If I rented a server would I be able to create a mail server and several different/ unrelated web sites?
How can I fix this Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multi-player problem? Okay well i bought Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and the Multiplayer works fine but i'm trying to play with my friend and he is hosting a non-dedicated server that is using the PeZBOTS mod which I have as well. So I added the ip address to my favorites but when i try to join then it says waiting for connection and times out. I know its not then internet because it works fine for normal CoD4 games and stuff. it does it whenever i try to join his ip. But joining his ip worked before so... I'm using logmein hamachi and that could be the problem because when I installed it a new connection started which is network 2. when i go over the wireless thing it says: linksys(the internet connection I'm on) internet access, and then it says network 2 no internet access. Whats wrong? I think it must be something with the network 2 thing but i can't get it to connect. I'm on windows 7 by the way. Please help. Thanks!
Is Windows XP good for a home network with shared external hard drives? I have setup one of my computers to be dedicated to host all of my external hard drives at home. I find that the transfer rate suffers greatly (from 2 times to 10 times slower than being directly connected to the computer needing the files). All hard drives are usb external. I was wondering if a WRTSL54GS storage router with USB hard drive sharing could be faster for data access on a home network than going through a winXP computer? Would linux work well enough to dispurse the data faster? Something like Ubuntu server edition or something? How does linux work with other windows os based computers on a small home network? All I need in the end is to have a place where all my ext. drives are connected and accessible with good transfer rates from other computers. Thanks.
Cooling a home server room? I have a dedicated server room in my house with 3 racks' worth of equipment (I host websites and use part of it for rendering), so as you imagine, it gets quite hot in there. This is a newly remodeled house, and at the moment, the room has no AC/heating duct. I can add it in easily enough, but I'm worried that it will reduce the efficiency of the central air by forcing it to run when the rest of the house is cool. Does it make sense to get a large window air conditioner instead, and leave the room disconnected from central air?
Some people can't see my site, they get a page not found, but I can and most can. Please HELP? Help please? On my PC and most others, my site can be seen, no problems, any browser. However, on my wife's laptop my site can not be seen on any browser (however it's ok going through a proxy site) We have the same windows and wireless and she has no problems with any other sites. This problem only came about after we migrated our site from a shared host to a dedicated server. One desktop at the office can also not see the site and get's a page not found. The standard, Oops, page not found. A friend has a MacPro and PC Laptop, his PC sees the site no problem, his MacPro does not see the site. The confusion and strangeness is driving me wild and i need this sorted before we go live. Please please can you help, we've tried many things and nothing is working? Site is Expatodyssey.com hosted in the Netherlands. We located in Seoul, Korea
Need help with port forwarding.? I have a 2wire router/modem (uverse) and a netgear wireless router. I have the 2wire router plugged into a LAN port on the netgear to make it a wireless access point. From the netgear router I have my computer plugged in. I can get internet and do whatever. The problem is I cannot port forward, and I need to to be able to host a dedicated game server. I have tried port forwarding strait from the 2wire router (no netgear router at the time) and still nothing. I have even put the server into DMZ Plus mode to let all traffic flow and still nothing. I also have AVG internet security (windows firewall turned off) and the AVG firewall is set to allow all. So I don't think it's a firewall issue. I can connect to the server from another computer at home but that's of course because I'm on the same LAN. If anyone else wants to connect it says "Failed after 10 retries." Can anyone help me? You gotta remember netgear router is handing out ipaddresses..DHCP is turned off so its only a wireless access point. And the server is in DMZ Plus mode
How can I register domain names for my clients? I'm from India (Chennai) I've planned to start a Web hosting company here. I got the server configuration and i'm going to use linux/windows. The problem is how can I register Domain Name for my Clients. If I purchase a dedicated server they provide all details but i have to pay in monthly basis but i'm not interested in dedicated servers and resellers. So I want my own server in my office. What should I do now? What is cpanel/plesk how it will help me? Where can I get cpanel/plesk?

Need an extremely simple web server setup? I'm planning on hosting a simple static, html website. I have everything setup I'm just deciding on what software to use. I have a dedicated machine 40 GB Hdd. I just need http support and an easy way to change files (windows share would be cool) from a computer on the same LAN. I've used HFS before in windows I would love to have something that simple as a dedicated OS. Just throw in a few files and go. The PC i'd like to use has no video card. any headless friendly Web hosting live CD's out there?
How can I embed a long video on my website? I have a ~90 minute video I'd like to have available online. Youtube and Google video are not options for this. We have a dedicated web server, but I'm curious as to how to host the file. The video (.wmv) played with an embedded windows media player is 270mb (too large), while the same video as a flash (.swf) file is only 20mb, but doesn't load properly. Is there a web service or a universal way to embed video files with relative ease?
sg tcp optimizer ruined my connection? I've used the sg tcp optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php) in the hope that i might increase my speed but instead it ruined it by making it awefully slow. My speed used to be 500-700 kb but now its limited to 50kb. Also, while using the optimizer, i've been following a guide for it : Connection speed: This should be set to your max download rate. So if you download at 256 kilobytes a second, it would be 2 Mbps. Here is a list of speeds: 128 KBps = 1 Mbps 256 KBps = 2 Mbps 512 KBps = 4 Mbps 1 MBps = 8 Mbps 2 MBps = 16 Mbps The calculation to find your exact speed is you take your highest download speed you've ever reached and multiply it times 8(assuming it was in megabytes) and select the closest number on the slider. You can also use this site to help you with any bit/byte calculations. http://www.matisse.net/bitcalc/ Now, select your network adapter. You're MTU should be set as high as your ISP can give you, and you can find your MTU by using the MTU/Latency tab. The PPPoE setting will not be explained in this guide due to the rarity of use. TCP Window Auto-Tuning should be set to disabled because windows tends to make it TOO large, and can cause some bandwidth slow down. Congestion Control should be set to CTCP. TCP Chimney is set by depending on your NIC. If you run a non-dedicated(attached to motherboard NIC) then this should be set to disabled. If you run a dedicated NIC like the Killer Xeno Pro or any other NIC attached via USB or PCI then set this to enabled. Receive-Side Scaling State should be set by how many cores(CPU cores) you have. If you are running a Single core processor then this should be disabled, but if you run a dual, triple, quad, or hexa core then set this to enabled. DCA should be left at Auto due to not many people knowing if their systems supports DCA(most multi-core systems do, you can test this on your own.) NetDMA can be enabled to take advantage of Direct Memory Access. TTL should be set to 64, but if you notice a loss of connection or increase disconnects set this to 128. ECN should be disabled due to game instability ex. Battle Field Bad Company 2. Windows Scaling heuristics should be disabled unless you want all these settings to be set back to default. Checksum offloading is just like Chimney offload, non-dedicated = disabled and dedicated = enabled. Windows Scaling should be ticked to allow website to use high TCP window sizes if the website supports it(helps with TCP window auto-tuning disabled) Timestamps should be disabled to free up some bandwidth. Now for the Advanced tab. You can leave the IE optimizations alone or play with them if you want. Best to set them to your max connections per server. There is a site to help you find your max, but I forgot the link. The host priorities should be set accordingly. Local = 4 Host = 5 Dns = 6 Netbt = 7 SynAttackProtect should be set to disabled to stop any internet checks(can cause slow downs). Leave on if you feel paranoid about the internet. TCP Max Data Retransmissions is best set to 7. I personally use a low value of 1 because I have a good computer and ISP.(no packet loss) Large System Cache can be enabled if you have a lot of RAM(random access memory). If you have less than 4 gigs then leave this to disabled. Size should be set accordingly: Default = Good for average internet user. Balanced = Average user with slight LAN use. Optimized = Lots of LAN use(local file transfer) and heavy internet use like torrents. QoS should be set to 0 AT ALL TIMES! This setting can heavily hurt your games if set above 1, due to it's trying to control bandwidth. Going to skip DNS errors because they are not needed to be changed, Gaming tweaks: TCP Ack Frequency is best left at default, though some users like it at 1, I've noticed that MW2 and internet browsing perform better at a value of 2. TCP No Delay should be enabled to allow for instant transmission of TCP packets. TCP Del Ack Ticks shouldn't be messed with unless you don't want TCP No Delay on. Dynamic ports can be left alone. They are fine at default. Is there anyway to return my speeds to normal? My computer specs: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz, 2.00gb RAM
Who buys Windows collocated servers? Why do they use that instead of dedicated hosting? I'm doing an internship and I need help figuring this out. Basically as I understand it, people use collocated servers instead of dedicated hosting because they have customized servers whose add-ons can't be replaced by the ones provided by dedicated hosting companies. What kinds of people and businesses need this service as opposed to dedicated hosting?
Can someone help me out with this Networking Assignment? Well here is the link to this assignment in full so you can view all the networking diagrams associated with the questions.. http://www.kucourses.com/ec/media/store/mediainfosys/IT273B/Unit9/Project9WorksheetStudent.pdf Here are the main questions I need help with though..  Part A: NOS characteristics Below is a table with NOS types and a list of statements that describe one or more of them. Table 9-2: NOS features NOS ABCDEFGHIJ Novell Open Enterprise Windows Server 2003 UNIX/Linux Mac OS X Project 9 BDetermining Server Placement Part A: LAN configuration The questions in Part A refer to the configuration shown in Figure 1. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. Some of the current network servers are shown. The servers are as follows: •Serv1—Domain controller •Serv2—Domain controller and DNS •Serv3—Domain controller •Gen1—File and print server •Gen2—File and print server Figure 1 shows the logical network organization. Physically, all servers are kept in the same secure room. The network supports approximately 90 hosts, including servers. Figure 1: Routed LAN 1.The network was configured as a routed LAN without completely considering network requirements. You are considering combining the subnetworks. What is the main network characteristic that you must consider before doing this and why? 2.Other than removing the routers and physically connecting the central connection devices, what would the change require? 3.What is the most likely impact on the network if Serv2 fails? 4.How can you minimize the potential problems? 5.If you were deploying a single DHCP server for the network, where would you place it to minimize overall network traffic and why? 6.What if you were deploying two DHCP servers?  Part B: Demand-dial configuration The questions in Part B refer to the configuration shown in Figure 2. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. It is also configured as a Windows Active Directory domain. Some of the current network servers are shown. The servers shown are as follows: •Serv1—Demand-dial router •Serv2—Demand-dial router •Serv3—Demand-dial router Currently, connections between each subnet are made over the public-switched telephone network (PSTN) using dial-up modems. Each server is configured with one modem. Access permissions are configured so that access to print and file servers is limited to hosts on the same subnet. Figure 2: Demand-dial network 1.What are the biggest concerns in relation to communication between subnets? 2.You are planning to deploy a domain controller in each subnet. Justify this decision. 3.What traffic will be required between the subnets? 4.Each subnet’s NetBIOS name resolution requirements are for the local subnet only. What do you need to do to support name resolution while keeping traffic and administrative requirements to a minimum?  Part C: Heterogeneous network The questions in Part C refer to the configuration shown in Figure 3. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. Some of the current network servers and clients are shown. The computers shown are as follows: •Linux1—Linux file server also used as a user workstation •Mac1—Mac OS X computer used primarily as a graphics and multimedia file server •Mac2—Mac OS X client used for commercial art and high-resolution graphics •Mac3—Mac OS X client used for commercial art, movies, and high-resolution graphics •Serv1—Windows Server 2003 file, print, and intranet web server •Serv2—Windows Server 2003 database I DONT FEEL LIKE STUDYING THIS BULLSHIT! Need help with a VPS? Hello everyone. I recently purchased a dedicated server and have been having trouble with putty. I have been using the server to try and host the game called minecraft. Hosting the server is not a problem however. What is the problem is being able to exit putty without stopping the server. I looked this up, and it sayed to create a screen. I did that after installing screen. I then created a screen, ran the server, then tried to disconnect using the ctr-a-d. However only two things happen when i push the buttons. The majority of the time the window just closes, along with my server stopping. The other thing that happens is putty just stops. I cant type in anything, but I am still notified when I try to close putty. Can anyone help me?
I need unlimited reseller hosting? I need an unlimited reseller hosting, unlimited bandwidth. In this hosting I need both OS in same control panel, that is I need an option of choosing windows OR linux while I host an domain. With personalized Name server for free. Like the following hosting providers. http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/ http://ecowebhosting.co.uk/ The above providers are not providing dedicated name servers.
Setting up a VPN Server/Network.? Our company wants to set up a VPN Server, basically there will be two office branches that will use this server. On the head office we will be using a 384 KBps burstable line, the second office will be using a 512 KBps dedicated line. Applications such as quick books and instant messaging will also be hosted in the server. The server will be physically based in a third location. As this is our first time setting up VPN, Our main concern as of now is how to actually configure Windows Server to run this kind of set up. Like what are the things i need to install (Active Directory,DHCP, DNS, etc...). Any tips, tutorials? Thanks.
How can i set windows firewall up to do this? I have a dedicated server running on windows 2008 with windows firewall. I have a program running on it that connects to 8 websites, and sends loads of packages to them. There are some flaws in one of these websites, which made my program send loads of packages to the local network of my dedicated hosting provider. It wont happen again, since i contacted the other website and told them what happened. They have fixed it. However, my hosting provider didnt agree and need me to prevent it on my own server aswell. They gave me the followin instructions: I need to reconfigure my server so that it doesn't forward requests TO private IPs into the public network. I know i can do this with default routes for 192.168.0.0/16 or 10.0.0.0/8 or i can configure my firewall so it blocks outgoing connections over the public interface to private IPs. This is all i have. I know my way around the server, i just dont know how to do this. Can anyone give me some guidelines on how to start out or how to fix it?
