Can anyone recommend a good hosting and dedicated server company? I have been shopping around for a web hosting and dedicated server provider for an online game being developed. But my brain is beginning to hurt as they all claim to be the cheapest/best! My current hosting company does not provide MySQL/PHP database support nor does it have a forum template, both things I need. I'm not too fussed on the price and in my opinion, word of mouth usually works best, so does anyone have first hand experience of some good hosting companies that also provide dedicated servers? I am based in the UK.

When hosting a dedicated server on Garrys Mod? I host a dedicated server, and I want to know if it is possible to pass off models and textures to people who join? They get the 'downloading files' and some things work, but for example: the Pikmin addon works, but the Final Fantasy ragdolls are big red ERROR's. Also Starship troopers ragdolls/npc are big ERROR's. they both have CS Source which is the only game I have, so I dont know what the problem is. How do I transfer the files through garrys mod? Alright well since they cant download it directly, which files can go through? The Pikmin addon went through fine, but the others didnt. Is there a reason?
Let's say I lease a dedicated server from some hosting company.? I use a software app like Virtuozzo or VMWare to create 4 Virtual Machines inside the server. I now have 4 virtual machines in the server, each with its own memory, OS, Windows. Would I be able to log into one of the VMs using remote software, and then - from that machine, browse the internet, go to other websites, download software, and basically do anything that I could do on a regular PC? Part of my trouble in understanding my own question, is that the leased dedicated server would probably not have a monitor attached to it, and I am used to using remote software that lets you see what is happening on the desktop of the computer being accessed. I am trying to figure out what I would see from my computer if I was connecting to one that did not have a monitor. Would I still be able to use my local mouse and keyboard in the environment of the remote server, and would I be able to do what ever I want to accomplish on the VM, despite it's status as a webhost server?

What are some reliable yet inexpensive hosting solutions for dedicated servers? I have developed a java based web application using struts, tomcat, mysql etc. I want to host all of these on a server (OS platform should not matter since it is all Java and mysql) that runs in some reliable data center. I want to get the benefit of all the managed services (they take backups etc right) but have my own server for dealing with the user-load and also that the Java apps dont run nicely on shared hosted systems (and they will not have all the tools and libraries we use). I am looking to see if there is any data center in India as well that has proven connectivity. Whatsoever information on this topic is much appreciated.
Can I have some game server hosting advice? want to host a Star Wars Battlefront II dedicated game server on my PC. But my connection is only 384K, so you can imagine the lag... :( I want to host a server with 32 or 40 people on it, using my computer as a server. I will also use the same computer to play in the server (this is so I can have a dedicated server while still being able to play in it). What kind of bandwidth do I need? 3M? 6M? Thanks :D
Shared host or dedicated server? Not sure which way to go. I am wanting to start up an information website that i am sure will get quite a bit of traffic. Just not sure weather to go shared host or dedicated server? From all my Research they both have good and bad points. Shared host- I am worried that my site may be blocked due to someone else i am sharing with say if they were selling pron or something? Slow page loading times? Do shared hosts get up in the top 10 for searches? But definitely the up side is it costs alot less. Dedicated server- Just costs so god damn much! Bt maybe its worth it? If i have faster page loading times etc then maybe id get even more traffic and cover alot of the costs through the money from the advertisements? I know i could go VPS but i just saw this as a mix of both, yes it costs less, but you are still sharing so I'm still worried about page loading times and the possibility of being blocked due to their content. My honest thought are if i am going to do it i may as well give my site its best possible Chance of succeeding. But maybe i don't need to go as far as the expense of a dedicated host? or do I ?? Any opinion or information would be help full. Thanks, Lisa
Dedicated Server? I will like to start my own web hosting and designing company...Do I need a dedicated server to start?

Game server hosting help? I have Star Wars Battlefront II on PC, and multiplayer is a lot of fun. Lately I've been trying to host a dedicated server with 32 people on it. But I only have a 384k DSL connection, and even if only a few people are on, they have high pings and tons of lag, making them hate the server and they'll never want to come back :( . I made it dedicated so that I wouldn't have to have Battlefront II running all the time (I'm using LucasArts's Server Manager). Yet, I can still join the game whenever I want. All I'm saying here is that I play Battlefront II on the same computer that I host the server on, which, yes, I know, is not the best option I suppose... But I don't have the luxuries of a thriving steady income. So, if I want to host 32 people, what kind of internet connection should I be looking into? What kind of connection is good enough so that the server won't hog bandwidth from the other computers my family uses? 512k? 1M? 3M? 6M? What other advice do you guys have for me? And I dunno, I have a feeling that I'm currently getting ripped off by my current provider ($29.95 for 384kbps). Thanks very much!

How can I shape server traffic on a "Maximum Trafic" model (dedicated hosting plan)? OK. I'm looking at purchasing a dedicated hosting plan with a local provider. This provider offers 2000GB traffic into and out of the server. What I want to do is shape traffic into the server based on how much traffic I have left. Example: I start off with a budget of 2000GB a month (66GB/day). This comes down to about 6Mb/s continual use. Of course, servers aren't continually used like this, so just "capping" bandwidth to 6Mb/s would waste bandwidth on spikes. After half a month has gone by, I've only used 500GB of my bandwidth, leaving 1500GB/Month, or 100GB a day. Traffic can now flow at 9Mb/s and I won't go over. I want a system that allows me to use as much traffic as my "budget" will currently allow. Extra points if I can "borrow" bandwidth from the future to help "pay" for spikes. I want "always on" while keeping under my bandwidth budget. Any ideas?

How do I startup and run a Counter Strike Source dedicated server to host over the internet so others can play I want to be able to have a computer specifically made for just being a server on the internet. I have some friends across the US that would want to play. I have started one before using the GUI interface, but when it is running, and I can join the server, when I send the IP to someone, they cannot connect to it. Ideas? Also, give me as much info as possible to something I may be missing out on or explain the entire process of starting up an internet server for CS:Source. THANKS!
Video Site script and a website with cheap dedicated hosting too run the site? Hello, im not exactly trying too make "the next youtube" its more for personal reasons. My current host doesnt allow streaming video (even though it says it clearly) for webhosting, incase your wondering its Hostgator. I asked them about it and even the dude at support didnt know it says it supports it... so he tells me too email support (since it was a chat session) and support tells me it just takes way too much bandwidth too allow webhosting have streaming video with some sort of video plugin FFMPEG .. so anyway they then tell me their dedicated server does.. but the prices are a bit high for me at this point and i wanna know if theirs a site that has a cheaper price.. if not then i have no choice but too use gators.. much thanks in advance :)
Mirror server hosting !!? We’ve been asked to offer a technical proposal for a new established TV station, and the IT manager of the station has a long list of requirements, we covered it all, only one issues lift as we never done it before: They want about 20-60 GB server for hosting and they want to have a mirror server, incase the 1st server was down, so it would redirect the visitors to the mirror server, I'm thinking of getting them a dedicated or semi-dedicated server, but how do you do the mirror issue. Some one said to get two dedicated servers, but: 1. How we make it that when one is down, it automatically directed to the other. 2. Should they be from two different companies and to different countries? 3. The web site will be with CMS and DB, how do you make sure that the mirror server have all the new data that was updated in the 1st server’s DB, do they have like shared DB or something, and how.. P.S. We use PHP/ MySql technology.
What steps must be taken for perodic maintaince of a web server? My company will be moving from a shared hosted server to a dedicated server (Unix). I understand that on a dedicated server, we will be responsible to do everything which includes maintaince. Can you please tell me what must I do on a regular and perodic interval to keep the server running smoothly. I am aware that it depends to a large extent on the applications running, but other than that (application independant) what do I need to do? Like for example (just from the top of my head) reboot it on a regular interval (whats a good time frame) or should I never reboot it unless it give a problem? How do I monitor that the server is always up and running, are there any tools which will monitor the server status and send a message to my cell phone when the server goes down? I am sure there may be many such things, everyone, PLEASE tell me everything you know in this issue, I want to be prepared as much as I can. Thanks a TON everyone.
How much memory/disk/cpu do I need for my dedicated server? It's going to run linux, host a MYSQL database and time scheduling application that needs to be able to support at least 200-300 concurrent users. It is an AJAX application for time scheduling so there's no big number crunching going on or anything. Is the server side bottleneck more likely to be memory or disk or CPU? I don't want to spend more than I have to on dedicated hosting but I need to make sure my server is powerful enough to support the app.
