Cheapest dedicated Linux server hosting in Chicago? What is the cheapest dedicated Linux server hosting package available in Chicago? I'm looking for something similar to fastservers.net, but cheaper. The data center and servers MUST be physically located in Chicago for my purposes. Thanks Thanks, but cihost.com is pretty expensive too, even worse than fastservers.net.

How much memory/disk/cpu do I need for my dedicated server? It's going to run linux, host a MYSQL database and time scheduling application that needs to be able to support at least 200-300 concurrent users. It is an AJAX application for time scheduling so there's no big number crunching going on or anything. Is the server side bottleneck more likely to be memory or disk or CPU? I don't want to spend more than I have to on dedicated hosting but I need to make sure my server is powerful enough to support the app.
I am planning on getting a dedicated server, what do you recommend? I have a small webdesign studio and I need the server to host my clients. The best deal I've found so far is godaddy.com what do you think of that company? What I need is: - Linux server with cPanel and unlimited domains - low cost - great stability, speed and great service what do you recommend?
How can I make my own dedicated web server? Hi, I'm currently trying to convert an altered (suped up) IBM Aptiva which was originally made for windows 98 into a web server. I would like to use this to host several sites. I'm trying to choose between either windows server 2003 or linux. Anybody have any advice?
How do I change my nameserver to my new dedicated hoster? I am finally moving my (usually) high-traffic site from its inadequate hosting to a dedicated server. Having already replicated the site at the new server, I now guess it would be prudent to transfer domain management and nameserving over to Fasthosts too (they are renting me the dedicated server). My current hosting is with 123, and they hold the domain record too. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW ALL THIS WORKS !!!! :S C-NAMES, domain records, I am clueless. They are meaningless words to me. I have Plesk V9 on the new server but it comes with no instructions for the uninitiated regarding DNS records. I am no Linux/hosting nerd. I have one successful site that I want to move to its own server, and that's it. I would rather not have a successful site offline for weeks while I buy/read books and so I want to get this right first time. Does anyone know of a web-guide for this process that is aimed at someone of my limited capabilities? Thanks in advance!

Sony PS3 Running Linux Server? Was wondering coz i know ps3 you can run a seperate OS i've made a choice of goin for Helios/yellow dog. Usually with my pc for example if i were to run any game and make a server i have to do some port forwarding in order for people to connect to me and stuff coz i'm behind a router. But when i play warhawk on my ps3 i make a server dedicated or non dedicated i dont need any port forwarding or DMZ. Was wondering if i install another OS on my PS3 and decide to run a server will it work the same? will i need to forward any ports for people to connect to me like when my pc hosts any kinda server or can it just do it on its own? And will my public IP address be the MacID or my normal ISP ip address?
What was the violation? What was the violation? No reason given. Details of Violation: If you are using Apache to host your site just go to the logs section. If it's shared hosting log into your site with ftp then cd ../logs and download the files there. If you are on a dedicated host it depends on where your apache conf file tells apache to put the logs. This is different on Linux, windoze, BSD, etc. Even under Linux it's different depending on what distro. If you have control panel or plesk you can just log in and view your logs. I have a shell script I used to use that downloaded my logs dailly and put them into a DB sorted by which server and what kidn of page hit it was. There are also free log analyzers if you are using Apache as your web server and Linux as your home OS. If you are running a dedicated Linux host you can install these and view the results from windoze machines as web pages. Reading others post. Alexa is not going to be remotely accura This is the part that was cut off. No reason given in the reason field. They are only accurate to represent a small fraction of web users who adopt the toolbar and find it compatable with thier web browsing. I was rather disapointed. Running a Server from Home - How do you do this? We work on some projects, scripts, which needs sometime dedicated server to host to run. As dedicated servers are just an extra cost for us, as we do need this hosting for just testing purpose for 10 to 20 days for script. So i am thinking to run own webserver for this job from my home. Can anyone tell me what is needed for this type of task, and is it feasible... have you done this before, if so what have been your experiences? Note: I have extra desktop pc. with DSL internet Connection with unlimited bandwidth.... --- I want to run Unix/Linux, with Apache.... but I am not much sure, how to link our domain name with this server.... Hope you can answer the question asap Thanks in advance.

Help with Socks5 Proxy? I would like to run a socks5 proxy on a web server from a hosting provider. It is a Linux server, but I do not have shell access. I can run some simple terminal commands (cd, dir, pwd) with a simple php script that uses system() but I can not run ./configure, make, or make install. Is there a way to run socks5 on this server? I tried using phproxy, but it doesn't seem to work on anything but port 80. Is there an alternative socks, http or https proxy that I can use with programs like Firefox. Note: I would prefer to have a dedicated server, rather than use tar Thanks
Would it make sense to run my own Wordpress server? My wife is getting into the website creation business as an adjunct to her internet advertising sales and believes she want to run it on wordpress. Being the former IT professional I am I have considered setting up my own Linux box on my LAN to test this. While it could be internet facing through my dedicated DSL connection the purpose of this is mostly for learning. It would be hosted outside for live clients. Other than a bunch of headaches, what would I get out of running my own dedicated server over running a free wordpress site or using a dedicated external host for this? Note: the main reason I am considering this is that she wants to be able to offer her clients http://www.yourdomainname.com access to their site versus http://wordpress.org/yoursitename. I know there are sites wherein this can be done but those cost money. I thought, if it wasn't too hard, that I could set up a host to use for learning before paying money. At the risk of sparking a religious war, if this would make sense does anyone have an recommendations? My goal is to get the system up and working as easily as possible. I am not going to do ongoing Linux development; I simply want a box on which I can host a wordpress site. I found this site http://technologycrowd.com/2010/01/02/install-wordpress-on-local-ubuntu-server/ with complete step by step instructions. I am open to alternatives if something easier exists. Thanks to those that already answered. To add to my question, I would never run a client site from my house. The purpose of this is so that she could try something out, decide she doesn't like it and tell me "reset it so I can try again." I know all about domain registration (my bulkregister account still has 47 domains registered for clients) but again, the point was to give myself a sandbox over which I have full control. Yes, I have a static IP address. In fact, I run a Windows 2003 small business server as my mail server and domain controller for my house.
I want to start a web hosting business. How do I start? I always wanted to start a business, in the web hosting industry. I installed server 2003 on an old laptop I had, played with IIS and Active Directory. I also played around with linux, and Apache. I'm more experienced on Apache, than IIS. I want to manage customers, websites, and feel cool. I wanted a business like this since I was small. I'm 17 now, a senior in high school. I want to do networking and security when I get older. I would like to start a web hosting business. It would make me harder worker, and then money to look at and tell myself I did a good job. I see web hosting companies all the time, not providing support all the time. :/ Once in a while, they log in to their support, then back out. I'd like to be the host that does provide support all the time. I sold Microsoft keys a while ago on eBay, and in two weeks - I managed to sell over 100 keys, and got $3,200. I haven't had one person say my support was bad. They all thanked me for helping them out right away, after buying the key. So, anyhow, does anyone know where I can start to start my own business? Should I buy a dedicated server, advertise, gain customers. Then when I get money, I can advertise more, buy a bigger server. With more and more money, I can buy my own server and bandwidth and host at my house. Does that how other businesses start? I have about $3000 I can use to start my business, but I would only like to spend $200 of it now because I need to look for a car.
What is the best CMS for a website? I am in the process of building a website. Unlike my other sites I wan't to use a cms this time. In your opinion what do you think is the best cms. I have tried joomla and drupal and wordpress. Joomla seemed sluggish and the admin panel wasn't very good. Drupal worked great until I tried to convert my html theme to it. Wordpress worked great! Really liked it but it is just to much of a blogging system. I wan't a website. I also tried surreal cms it was the best so far all I had to do was ad class="editable" to the divs and spans that I wanted to edit. The problem with it is the actual admin panel is hosted on their site. Is there anything like this that I can host on my own server. It would need to be PHP I am a linux dedicated server. I have no ASP support and I refuse to install the apache mods. Thank-You! PS For anyone wondering on how surreal cms works it hooks up to your ftp system.
What does it take to host a game server? What does it take to host a game server? say a Counter-Strike 1.6 server. NOT SOURCE. with maybe 16 people in it. Do you think I could do it from a dedicated Linux laptop? The laptop won't even be running a graphical UI so it can have all the resources will go toward the server. The laptop isn't too special, but I also have a really kick ass desktop computer that I could host if from if need be. So what I'm really wondering, is if it is practical to host a cs 1.6 server on my local home network. My results from speedtest.net: Download speed 3.29 Mb/s Upload speed 0.49 Mb/s with ping 52ms An additional side question is, whether or not you think I'd be able to also play on this server from the same network (but on a different computer) or do you think that's pushing it? Thanks for any feedback. (as long as it's constructive).
Why did MAILER DAEMON return my e-mail from an e-mail address I never sent to? I have a dedicated linux server of which I sent an e-mail from (account A) to another email address account (account B) of mine on a different shared host and I did successfully receive the email in account B. However, from account B, I also received a MAILER-DAEMON email from my server stating: I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. <abc@abc.com>: Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. vpopmail (#5.1.1) I don't know who abc@abc.com (email changed for privacy) is and I never even e-mailed this person. Does this mean my server is hacked or has a spam bot overriding my mail server or something? Sorry I meant to state that I had received the MAILER-DAEMON email in my Account A, with the same returned message on the bottom as the email I had sent to Account B!
Which is best offshore hosting service? I like to start a website that registered users can upload and download files. As I know, many hosting providers does not allow all my requirements. And a few service providers allow some of them, not all. I need your help. Please guide me the right hosting service. or give me any links that could help me. My requirements: > At least 200 GB webspace > 3 TB (or at least 500 GB) monthly bandwidth > Fastest and Reliable Connection and Servers > PHP 5 or 4 > MySQL 5 or 4 > Apache > UNIX/Linux/freeBSD > Fantastico Package > Shell Access > At least 50 FTP Accounts. (controllable user accounts via control panel) > 1000 Email IDs with webmail, POP3, SMTP > Spam filter > At least 99% Uptime - Guaranteed > Allowing any file types (including mp3, mpg, avi, swf, exe, zip, pdf, doc, exl, .....) > offshore hosting (means the server is in a country where there are few/no laws regulating online activity, porn, warez, etc...) I will not allow porn, warez, cracks. If I find such a file is in my website, I must remove it as soon as possible. But, in the meantime, my hosting service should allow it. > My hosting account should not be removed/suspended for my user's file. > Managed Service > Dedicated IP/Server > 24/7 Support I'm waiting for your replies. Please give me the advice and links. Thanks in advance.

Old laptop into home gaming server? Two things. First things first, I took the HD out of a broken computer I own and put it into another computer with a dead HD. Windows won't activate. I'm missing the activation key on both computers, it's rubbed off of the working one, and the other laptop is long gone. Ideas? For the second and most important thing.... I have this laptop I want to turn into a dedicated gaming server for our home network. Primarily just for minecraft. We've got 5 people playing minecraft here and it's too much for the computer I'm using to handle. So, what would I do to make this possible? I want it to host the server and addons. It's powerful enough to do it easily. Do I just install a linux based system? Do I make windows 7 function and install something on it? I'm not sure what to do first, so some guidance would be appreciated.
Network of Dedicated Servers? I am looking for a number of servers (say 40 dedicated machines) each with their own IP, not in the same IP address range, spread around the world. It can be Linux of windows PCs. Does anyone know of a good solution or service for this? I have looked into EC2 from Amazon but they do not have the support I need. Ideas? Note: I am not looking for caching services or exclusively web hosting. The machines should have different external IPs, possibly different locations and also be able to run desktop windows applications. The servers will be working independently. They will also be running a .NET desktop application and another 3rd party windows application and need a connection to the internet. Linux or Mono wont work. Linux would work if the version support vmware.
Is it possible to run a CS:S server through a website, such as "http://google.com/csserver"? I have a yahoo small business website, and it says I have unlimited bandwidth/storage space, and that would be perfect to run a server off of I would guess... I have a proxy on my site at the moment that most of my school uses, because our school blocks every website (including google images) and the site doesn't lag, because it runs at yahoo, and yahoo has some DEDICATED servers. Can I load the pre-made files onto the website through FTP? Is it the same? or would I need to actually get a VPN or whatever it's called, where it hosts an actual operating system (ie windows, linux, etc.) Also, by "CS:S" I meant CounterStrike: Source

how powerful of a computer do you need to host a minecraft server? Here is the scenario: Me and about 5 friends wish to play on our own server, At most maybe 10 people on it. It will be running over LAN (will Hamatchi) since the college won't let me set a static ip address on the server. I planned on re-purposing my old (I mean really old desktop) as a dedicated minecraft server. Here are specs: Intel Celeron 1.6GHZ (It's a slightly newer one, though probably equal to the Atom CPU at the same speeds.) 2GB (I believe DDR2) I think it can be boosted to 4GB but not 100% certain 250GB Sata drive 80GB Sata drive that's pretty much all I know. I don't know Linux too much and use other things for minecraft for Windows so it'll be running Windows 7 32-bit (Since I know only having 4GB of ram or more will benefit only the 64-bit.) My question is simply this: Will this pc let me run about 10 users at the same time? If not how many? And will it allow for a little bit of user adds in the future? I really don't want to spend alot of money on repurposing it. So as is for the time being is preferable. I do know some about the minecraft server and know I can limit the user amount. So I can set that. Thanks for all the help. Suggestions, comments, ideas would be great.
Self-Hosting vs. VPS: which is right for me? I have two hosting needs: PHP and Rails. I've had (a bad) experience hosting a PHP site on a shared server. I've also briefly run a simple PHP server for a hobby site with low-availability standards. Now that I'm considering running a serious, large site (Ruby on Rails), in addition to a few small existing PHP sites, should I host myself, or choose a Virtual Private Server? * I have a 3.0GHz P4 / 1GB ram machine I could dedicate to hosting. * I am familiar with general computer security principles, programming, and Linux * I have a Comcast cable connection (no static IP) * I can't imagine spending much more than $50 / mo. to start. I'll add any details you consider relevant.
How can I register domain names for my clients? I'm from India (Chennai) I've planned to start a Web hosting company here. I got the server configuration and i'm going to use linux/windows. The problem is how can I register Domain Name for my Clients. If I purchase a dedicated server they provide all details but i have to pay in monthly basis but i'm not interested in dedicated servers and resellers. So I want my own server in my office. What should I do now? What is cpanel/plesk how it will help me? Where can I get cpanel/plesk?
HELP: I need a crash course on Servers? hi. i really need to know this ASAP? the more detailed answer w/extraneous information, the better. 1. so i've read you can take an old PC and turn it into a "server". so why do companies purchase these: http://www.townsendassets.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Cisco_AS5350.jpg 2. what is the difference between this server: http://www.townsendassets.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Cisco_AS5350.jpg and this thing: http://www.advancednetworkingsolutions.com/Content/Images/server.png 3. pls explain the difference between a server, dedicated server, and a virtual server (and any other kind of servers). why would a company purchase a dedicated server as opposed to a virtual server as opposed to just buying godaddy or bluehost hosting or something??? 4. what is the difference between a server and a "universal gateway"? for example CISCO AS5350 why is it called a "gateway" and not a server? 5. how do you access this: http://www.townsendassets.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Cisco_AS5350.jpg do just connect it to a monitor? and then access it through UNIX? or do you connect that thing to a computer? or...??? 6. what is the difference between UNIX and LINUX?
How many people can view my website at the same time? Hi i have a website with some funny videos on a static page , some flash games and a forum the number of total visitors i expect to visit it is about 100k+ a month i have some shared hosting on godaddy but they allow only 200 connections to be made at the same time they told me i need to upgrade to a VPS or Dedicated server. How many people at the same time can those servers handle? Do you think this plan would be ok or would it be slow and low bandwidth? Thank you for your time. • OS: Linux CentOS • RAM: 2 GB • Storage: 30 GB • Bandwidth: 1,000 GB/mo
Alternatives to Barracuda Networks Spam and/or Web filters? My company is dumping Barracuda Networks. We still need to block the spam from reaching a users inbox and block a user from surfing inappropriately. All options are on the table: Web based hosted filtering services A rack mounted appliance (like the Barracudas) Software to run on a dedicated Windows Server A VMWare device Reusing an old PC/Server with ready to go linux install Other? The only options not available are installing software on the Exchange Server and installing applications at the desktop level. Tell me what you use and why!! Thanks
Is Windows XP good for a home network with shared external hard drives? I have setup one of my computers to be dedicated to host all of my external hard drives at home. I find that the transfer rate suffers greatly (from 2 times to 10 times slower than being directly connected to the computer needing the files). All hard drives are usb external. I was wondering if a WRTSL54GS storage router with USB hard drive sharing could be faster for data access on a home network than going through a winXP computer? Would linux work well enough to dispurse the data faster? Something like Ubuntu server edition or something? How does linux work with other windows os based computers on a small home network? All I need in the end is to have a place where all my ext. drives are connected and accessible with good transfer rates from other computers. Thanks.

Recommend a good shared linux hosting service for my wordpress blog? Hi, I hosted with squarebrothers.com and series of problems haunted me and my website. I wanted to transfer to net4.in but online reviews are reminding me my past horrible experience. These are for static portfolio websites I guess. I run a daily updated blog that grows rapidly in both size and number of unique visitors. I run a wordpress blog with at least 2500 unique page views. I don't want to have any problems like "bandwidth exceeded" or "CPU resource abuse" or anything else Can anyone recommend a shared linux hosting service? money doesn't matter much Do I need to go to VPS or dedicated server otherwise? I invite all recommendations with any plan of web hosting though I prefer Indian company. Do I need to host with US companies for shared or VPS or dedicated server palns? any recommendations on which company? I am standing with just backup, I don't want to end up like this again so please help me if you know a hosting company with very good customer support. Thanks in advance Nix
Can someone help me out with this Networking Assignment? Well here is the link to this assignment in full so you can view all the networking diagrams associated with the questions.. http://www.kucourses.com/ec/media/store/mediainfosys/IT273B/Unit9/Project9WorksheetStudent.pdf Here are the main questions I need help with though.. Part A: NOS characteristics Below is a table with NOS types and a list of statements that describe one or more of them. Check the boxes for the letters that best describe each NOS. Each statement applies to at least one NOS. Some statements may apply to multiple NOS types. A.Defaults to TCP/IP as a network protocol. B.Supports bindery as a downlevel authentication method. C.Supports NTLM as a downlevel authentication method. D.Provides a user interface for running standard applications. E.Deployed as a dedicated server. F.Based on or emulates a UNIX kernel. G.Uses a directory system to locate network objects and resources. H.Can be downloaded, deployed, and used at no charge. NOSABCDEFGH Novell Netware/Open Enterprise Windows Server 2003 UNIX Linux Mac OS X Part B: NOS features Below is a table with NOS types and a list of features. Check the boxes for the letters that best describe each NOS. Each statement applies to exactly one NOS. A.Uses Samba to support Windows clients. B.Uses the Open Directory system. C.Includes NWLink protocol support. D.Provides a management interface only. E.Uses X Windows as GUI user interface. F.Saves documents in PDF format as native file format. G.Runs on SUSe Linux. H.Native requests for services use SMB protocol requests. I.Native support for printers and printer management uses LPD/LPR protocols. J.Includes Keychain for password storage. Table 9-2: NOS features NOS ABCDEFGHIJ Novell Open Enterprise Windows Server 2003 UNIX/Linux Mac OS X Project 9 BDetermining Server Placement Part A: LAN configuration The questions in Part A refer to the configuration shown in Figure 1. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. Some of the current network servers are shown. The servers are as follows: •Serv1—Domain controller •Serv2—Domain controller and DNS •Serv3—Domain controller •Gen1—File and print server •Gen2—File and print server Figure 1 shows the logical network organization. Physically, all servers are kept in the same secure room. The network supports approximately 90 hosts, including servers. Figure 1: Routed LAN 1.The network was configured as a routed LAN without completely considering network requirements. You are considering combining the subnetworks. What is the main network characteristic that you must consider before doing this and why? 2.Other than removing the routers and physically connecting the central connection devices, what would the change require? 3.What is the most likely impact on the network if Serv2 fails? 4.How can you minimize the potential problems? 5.If you were deploying a single DHCP server for the network, where would you place it to minimize overall network traffic and why? 6.What if you were deploying two DHCP servers? Part B: Demand-dial configuration The questions in Part B refer to the configuration shown in Figure 2. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. It is also configured as a Windows Active Directory domain. Some of the current network servers are shown. The servers shown are as follows: •Serv1—Demand-dial router •Serv2—Demand-dial router •Serv3—Demand-dial router Currently, connections between each subnet are made over the public-switched telephone network (PSTN) using dial-up modems. Each server is configured with one modem. Access permissions are configured so that access to print and file servers is limited to hosts on the same subnet. Figure 2: Demand-dial network 1.What are the biggest concerns in relation to communication between subnets? 2.You are planning to deploy a domain controller in each subnet. Justify this decision. 3.What traffic will be required between the subnets? 4.Each subnet’s NetBIOS name resolution requirements are for the local subnet only. What do you need to do to support name resolution while keeping traffic and administrative requirements to a minimum? Part C: Heterogeneous network The questions in Part C refer to the configuration shown in Figure 3. The network is a routed TCP/IP LAN. Some of the current network servers and clients are shown. The computers shown are as follows: •Linux1—Linux file server also used as a user workstation •Mac1—Mac OS X computer used primarily as a graphics and multimedia file server •Mac2—Mac OS X client used for commercial art and high-resolution graphics •Mac3—Mac OS X client used for commercial art, movies, and high-resolution graphics •Serv1—Windows Server 2003 file, print, and intranet web server •Serv2—Windows Server 2003 database I DONT FEEL LIKE STUDYING THIS BULLSHIT! IM NOT EVEN A INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY MAJOR AND THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY DEGREE, I JUST HAVE TO TAKE IT AS AN ELECTIVE. SO CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT WITH THIS NONSENSE!
