Network With Small Business Server Knowledge Base
Can someone advise on best internet security suite for small business network set-up? We have a small office set-up of 10 computers and we are connected to a small business server. Currently our network is protected with Sophos anti-virus but would like to know if there are other products available that can provide a higher internet security suite for our network? You can also comment on how satisfied you are with your current internet security provider. Would greatly appreciate your comments. Obviously would like to hear from users rather than sales persons. Thank you!
Whats the difference between "Small Business Server 2003" & "Server 2003 for Small Business Server"? I was placed in charge of setting up a network and server at work a few weeks ago and I've been having a lot of trouble getting things to work. They bought "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Small Business" in addition to an extra set of licenses that is for "Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003" I am realizing that there is a difference between "Small Business Server" and "Server FOR Small Business". What is the difference and most importantly what is "Server FOR small Business" used for? Currently my server is running Server 2003 for small business server. This is my first built server and network but i have built over 25PC's so am somewhat familiar with hardware and Windows OS. Can anyone help me? So far it is confirmed that what I have allows only 15 user clients and geared toward file and print sharing. It is also a seperate OS from Small Business Server 2003.
Wireless on a small business network? I have a friend with a small business, about 8 computers. All hooked up to the main server via Ethernet. She has one room that does not have access to Ethernet and would like to put that one computer on wireless. I am not sure how the server is configured. but i do know she needs to use resources from the server on this wireless PC How is the best way to hook up a wireless router to enable her full access to her network and server? Thanks
Will a new 64-bit Win7 Pro laptop be compatible with a 32-bit XP server/network? I need to add a new laptop to a small business network. The server is running MS Small Business Server 2003 SP2 on a 32 bit machine, with 7 desktops and laptops running 32 bit XP SP2. All software is running from the individual workstations, the server primarily is for central data storage. I'm on a budget for a new laptop, and all the good deals for the laptops I'm looking at are Win7 Pro 64 bit. Will there be any compatibility issues? Lenovo cust svc said no problem, Dell cust svc said it won't work. (I know I may need XP mode for any old software we use). Any more information about the data transfer rate issue? I have not been able to find anything about the difference between Pro and Ultimate regarding transfer rate.
How do you set up a server network card to accept a static IP address? I'm working with Windows Small Business Server 2003 on a Dell Poweredge 1900. I've manually entered the IP address and preferred and alternate DNS servers. BT suggested I use 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet Mask, and the static IP address they've issued as the Default gateway, but I cannot get a connection. If I switch back to 'Obtain an IP address automatically' I get a connection but the card is generating an IP address of 10.0.0.7. I need to have the card retain the static IP address so I can access the server remotely. The server has two NICs; one for the external broadband connection (which is the one I am having problems with) and a second which is hooked to our network switch. I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can give on this. Many thanks.
What kind of server should I build for our small business network? Hello. I am a little new to the server world. I was wondering what type of server I should get for setting up active directory, DNS, FTP, mail, and a web host. I want all of our users documents to be on the server, I want to be able to deploy Windows XP through every computer (in other words I need a network boot with a ghost image or any image to restore the OS and drivers for that type of computer specific to the image). Here are my current specs: http://presidentialdebtsolutions.com/ServerRig/Server%20Build.htm This is what I wish to build. It will be running at most about 25 computers. Will this suffice? Using Windows Server 2008. Also. Is it possible to leave the 2nd CPU slot empty until we decide to add a second Xeon CPU? Thanks. I will be running Raid 1 on the two 1TB drives to preserve data.
Small Business Server Keeps Shutting Down? Hi everyone I have a frustrating problem with the Windows Small Business Server at my office. It regularly keeps shutting down and provides me with the following error: event id: 1011 Multiple domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server have been detected in your domain. To prevent this computer from shutting down in the future, you must remove all but one of these from the domain. The only problem is I do not have another another DC on the network! We have another Server 2003 machine running file and print services but it is not configured as a domain controller. Any Ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks In Advance
Setting up a small business network? Okay, so I have no real experience with setting up networks and need to set one up for a small business. I am very tech/PC savvy though, so dont worry about using technical terms etc. Basically we have three PCs two of which are used for accounts and one for CAD work and we need the 'my documents' folder to become a common folder for all three PCs so that any file saved or created will be immediately accesible by all three PCs directly. We tried using a 'shared folder' on the network, but its not very conveniant. Ideally this setup would involve a network server that acts as the primary storage system for which all three PCs share their files in one place at any time regardless of whether the other two PCs are turned off or not. It would also act as a backup for all of our files and ideally be accesible through the internet (guarded by username and password) so we can access all of the files from anywhere on any computer if needed. If someone could tell me what I need to get and what to do that would be brilliant! Thanks in advance. Joe Harrison
Vista will not connect to Small Business Server 2003 R2? I recently set-up a domain on my Windows Small Business Server 2003 Premium Edition R2 machine. Well my office has both XP Pro systems and systems running Windows Vista Business Edition. The XP systems connected to my server (Domain) with no problem but the Vista Business systems can't seem to locate it. If I search for the shared files on my server under the run command I am able to locate them but as far as locating the domain no luck. I have received a number of error messages ranging from can't locate the Small Business Server to some router set-up issues, to can't locate the users or computers on the server. I am confused because the XP systems connected just fine. The http://servername/connectcomputer does not work for me nor does locating the server through the network set-up. Any suggestions will help.
Small Business Server - Linux or Windows? I have a small business office, 15 computers all are on wired LAN. Also have a wireless network setup, with about 15 devices. Which software would be better to run on a desktop for a small server. I need the following: Performance/Speed Many/Multiple Users FTP/SSH Access Performance is my big issue. I need this to be quick and fast when my employees are accessing the server at the same time. Just wondering which OS would be better. Thanks! Ok I guess also, what are the pros & cons of each Linux and Windows?
Help Setting Up Secure Small Business Network with Static IPs? I am setting up a small office network that is composed of the following: Hardware: - 1 Windows 2003 Enterprise server (R2) - 3 to 5 Windows XP and Vista computers Software / Services: - An FTP site will be necessary for uploading files - We will receive 5 static IPs from Verizon (DSL). One will be exclusively assigned to the FTP server. - VPN using 2003 server I have a basic idea of what needs to be done, but I am not too sure if this is the best way to do this. I am planning on getting a firewall to go between the DSL modem and a router. However, I am not sure what kind of router/switch to use because I am not sure how to handle splitting the static IP addresses. The FTP server will need to reside on the 2003 server (either via IIS or Linux running in virtualization). I also need to configure incoming VPN using Windows 2003 Server. I would like to know what the Best Practices for this situation would be. I'm having a a hard time finding this info on the web. Thank you!
how can i disable the windows xp sp2 from deploying from windows 2003 small business server? i have recently installed windows 2003 small business server service pack 1, which comes with an installer for windows xp service pack 2. however, we're on a wireless network, and it can take over an hour and a half at times when transferring all the data and installing sp2 on the client. is there a way i can disable this from being installed, since the "remove" function in "setup client applications" wizard won't let me!! thanks, dan
Windows Small Business Server 2003 Cache Issue. Help!!!? We have a server at work running Windows Small Business Server 2003 that is located behind a hardware firewall. We have 8 workstations going through the server before working their way out to the internet. We have been having a problem with getting older versions of websites on our computers when people outside our network can see the newer version. For example, we upload data to an outside computer system that works in tandem with our main company software. However, when we then go to that website through Firefox or IE, the new information does not appear to be there, but if I call someone at home and have them check the website, it's updated. I can only assume it's some sort of cache problem here at work, but I have no idea how to remedy the situation. Anyone else have any idea?
problem with a small business network? I work at a small business. They had several 10/100 10 ports switches all daisy chained together branched off the cable modem. They did not like the look of it so they asked me to come up with a solution. I ordered a netgear WNDR3700 wifi router and a Dlink 1024 24 port 10/100/1000 switch. I also rerouted all of the network cables into a storage closet to clean up the area. I pretty much left everything at default and most of our equipment is set up for DHCP. This improved the network traffic. over the past 6 months we have added several pieces of equipment that also connect to the internet through the network. We have a small business domain that runs off a server running windows 2003 server. All of the workstations are desktops or laptops. the desktops running xp the laptop running windows vista. There is one software program that we run our scheduling and inventory and invoices from that resides on the server and is accessed by the workstations. This software has always ran rather slowly (it is very poorly written software, always has been) but was at least acceptable. The other day they asked me to also move the server into the storage closet. So I shut everything down and moved the server, ran a shorter Cat V cable to it and fired everything back up. The internet access and everything seems to be fine the software on the server is moving so slowly that it's unusable. My question is would grouping the plugs on the switch and managing the IP addresses of the equipment so the domain PCs and server had static IP addresses in a certain range and switching DHCP to like 50-250 instead of 1-250 improve this problem or should I be looking for other factors? There is not an abundance of heat or anything else at work here i just simply moved the server 15 foot into the closet. I am not a networking guy but I know enough to make some changes and setup some things (just enough to be dangerous as I describe it)
I want to go into business for myself offering server space, but I'm not sure how to get started...? I'm fairly new to business, but I want to go into business for myself. The company I'm with now works with a kid who is only 19 years old and went into business for himself offering server space and now makes enough that it's self-supporting. One thing I DO know is I need to build up capital, but I'm fairly young (22 years old) and I don't think my credit is decent enough to apply for loans. However, before I even consider raising capital for this venture, I'm not sure how I would even get started. Do I just purchase up servers and a high bandwidth? Do I need to start buying up domain names? Is this something I could do out of home or should I lease a facility? I was thinking of purchasing one of those pre-built barn-type buildings and insulating it myself and converting that into an office at home. I guess a side question would be what are some good books to read on the subjects of small business and networking/servers? Should I focus on Windows or Linux servers? HELP!!
How easy is it to set up a small business server with Microsoft Small Business Server i have good IT knowledge? I have a main high powered computer that will run the Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 as a OS. This is connected via Ethernet into the router switch with the 15 computers attached to the switch too. I want to set up a system with free roaming user accounts on the 15 computers. How easy will it be for me to set up this system, I have great knowledge in most areas of IT like Networks but not much experience with servers. Also what operating system will need to be installed on the client computers?
How to setup a small business network? Here is the scoop...We will have 3-5 desktops and probably one laptop, alll running Windows (xp or vista, not sure yet) I want to know how to setup a network for a small business with the following criteria (links to sites would work too!). 1. All will be connected to the internet 2. Would like to have a shared file server (somewhere all computers can go to access and edit files). 3. Link email accounts to these computers. Ideally, once someone "logged in", they would have there own C drive and email, but still have access to the shared files 4. I assume once the network is setup, all printing could be routed thru one of the computers for all to use? Really more important than the procedure to set this up, I would like an "equipment list", including software, needed to do this. Thanks in advance for the help. 11111111111111111111111
Windows 2003 Small Business Server? I will be setting up 2003 SBS with DNS, Exchange, FTP & Web server, file server, etc. Should these services be installed on separate servers, or will it be ok with them all on the same machine? If all on same machine, should they all be on separate hard drives, etc? Network will only have 40-50 users, plus various devices. If you need more info, let me know and i'll post it, or contact me at imwalt@hotmail.com. Thanks.
How To Setup Small Business Server? I currently use GoDaddy to host a non-profit website. I would like to be able to cut out the middle man. My home/office network (all wireless) currently has **NETWORK DETAIL** 5 Desktops, 5 Laptops, 2 printers, 1 Linksys wireless-N router, 1 Hawking Hi-Gain Dual Band Wireless-N range extender, 1 Silver Motorola DSL modem (6Mb/s max downstream) 3 Wireless entertainment systems, and 4+ mobile devices at any given day. DSL>Router>Network A > Computer(stop) OR DSL>Router>Network A > range extender> Network B> Computer(Stop)) **NETWORK DETAIL** I would like to be able to host my site from my home/office. I'd also like to be able to share files over two separate networks (Network A and Network B) I am good with networking, but I don't know what I need to setup a server to host the website and have file sharing for the two networks. I know its not advisable but I would like to keep this wireless.
Starting a small business- designing small business/home Networks? I would like to start a side business designing and implementing small business/home networks. I'm just wondering how feasible this is at my current experience/education level. I am currently in a Bachelors degree program; at an associates degree level in Information Technology with a main focus in Network Administration (4.0GPA to date). I am familiar with and understand subnetting (VLSM concepts), Windows Server topics, such as, Active Directory, DNS, file management and utilities etc. I believe I'm very close to taking and passing CompTIA A+ and an MCTS exam, specifically 70-640. My course line ups are all geared towards Microsoft Server and Linux Administrating. I also have 5+ years of desktop support in a call center environment. I've setup several small networks over the years and a small Windows Server 2003 domain at home. I do not have any wiring experience (recommendations on how to learn that would be helpful- with limited income).

Network Design - Client Server? Would someone be able to give me some suggestions on how to design a client server network for a small business with two floors. Floor one has 15 computers and a colour printer and floor two has 10 computers and a black and white dot matrix printer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Setting up a server environment for a small business? Hi. I am the CTO of a new small sized company (15 employees) and would like to provide the following services on my network without using windows server 2003 (cost reasons) or linux (not enough knowledge reasons). 1. Mail server - I intend to use Mdaemon as a mail server along with the outlook connector to replicate what exchange does without having to go thru the tedious task of installing server 2003 and exchange and not to mention the money saved. A few employees will be using blackberry's.. so i wanted to know how to integrate the same with the mdaemon server? 2. I want to set up some sort of file server system wherein each user is assigned space on the server which only he /she can access. 3. Is it possible to have automated backups from each node on the network every evening? I want to implement this entire setup on XP professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
How do I set up a small network? Okay, here's the scenario. I am going to work for a very small realty company in a few days. They are a new company, so not much work has been done in the office. The office is a small home (3 bedrooms) that was converted into the business office. There are 4 workstations, 3 in different rooms (offices) and 1 at the front desk. Each office has a computer (brand new) with a printer (some are different printers than others i.e. the front desk computer prints better brochures while one of the printers in the back is a laser jet used for bigger print jobs. None of the computers can currently share any files. They are all running on the same internet connection (from Time Warner). The workstations are unable to print from different areas in the office (i.e. I can't print something at the front desk from any of the office computers.) I will also need to have quickbooks running on ALL workstations and I need ANY of the workstations to be able to pull up the quickbooks to see exactly what is going on at any given time. My question is, with 4 workstations, 4 printers (doing different jobs) and quickbooks needed to be accessed from each computer, what is the BEST and most COST EFFICIENT way to get this done? Would I need a small business server? What about microsoft file sharing instead of a server? Any information at this point is helpful. Randall - does there need to be a server to share all the printers with the link that you gave? Or because they are all using the same network connection (as far as being all connected to the internet via Time Warner) I can use this method and not have to get a server?

Can someone advise me on this network setup? As storage is my main emphasis in this network (I plan to have 2 Terabytes of data total and I would like to have a backed up copy of this size as well). Will I need two servers because the one with my software on it doesn’t want an active directory run on it? I’m also a little confused about how the file sharing will work with the Network Attached Storage device, does Windows Server have something in it to implement this? Also from a security standpoint what would I need to address in Windows if I have a NAS, will Windows file sharing be secure between the users/server/clients? My point with the NAS was to save money and separate the data from the server processor (only OS+apps)…also the cheapest servers on Dell have about a 2.4GHZ processor and a 160GB hardrive for about 1600….would buying a nice desktop and putting Windows Server 2008 on it be a better option?? I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned? The biggest point is that I want my system to be low maintenance, easy to setup, and my switch to be un-managed (aka no IT expert needs to be around to configure the ports…etc) I've heard that the remote device can be a security issue....but I've looked around and it seems difficult to find a server (such as from dell or HP) that has 2 Terabytes of redundant (RAID 1) hard drive space. Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I also thought separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldn't have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous.

Any ideas on a small business network? Five doctors have formed a partnership and are consulting my team and I for creating a network between the five offices. We will be using existing T1 lines to connect the offices but are not sure on the network and subnet design. Four of the offices are each about 15 miles from the central office, which has an existing LAN in place. Also, the east and west offices have existing LANs. All five offices have outdated hardware and software, so we will be replacing all of the computers with new systems running Windows XP. Each office will require ten computers, a printer/scanner/copier, and a fax machine. We will be using SUSE Linux to run the server. It will also be using Samba in order to work with the XP clients. We aren't sure which would be easier: if all of the offices should be on one subnet or if each office should have it's own subnet. We also plan on having Voice Over IP for each office. If it's all one subnet, then VoIP will be no problem. But, if we go with multiple subnets, should we get seperate VoIP services for each subnet? or have one VoIP provider on the central server? I should also mention that the doctors have not given us the job yet. They are "shopping around" for the best deal for them. any help with this would be much appreciated.
Best e-mail server options for a small business? I work at a small company and we're trying to find a better solution for e-mail. Currently we use Outlook retrieving mail by POP3 from a hosting service, however their servers are becoming increasingly unreliable. Also, we want all email to be backed up on a local central server instead of having mailboxes on each PC or depending on a remote server for our critical data. I suggested using some service that works by IMAP, but my boss is weary of relying on unreliable ISPs. The main problem with our system now is that all email retrieved by POP3 has to be stored locally on each PC, which leaves us vulnerable in case of a PC crash or data loss (and also makes accessing our mail from home or by mobile device cumbersome). We've tried storing the Outlook mailboxes on a local network file server, but this has proven to be extremely problematic as well, since any lag or glitch on the local network makes Outlook throw a fit. 1) Our internet connection is not reliable enough for us to host the e-mail servers locally 2) We've had bad experiences with a number of ISPs in the past, so whoever we go with needs to be extremely reliable and also have proven remote backup solutions, and ideally we want some kind of local backup 3) We send and receive a lot of large file attachments so the service needs to have a large disk quota and fast transfer rates at reasonable cost Is there any kind of solution like a local IMAP caching server or something like that, which mostly relies on the ISP but allows us to still read already-downloaded mail when the internet connection is down? Any other suggestions? Will give best answer! Thanks!
The Password to my SERVER's operating system is lost. What can I do.? Back in 2003 a person who is no longer with my company installed WINDOWS SMALL BUSINESS SERVER 2003 into my network server. Last month a new Tech employee I hired changed the password to access the server - AND HE FORGOT what it was. The Real Problem: It turns out we could solve our problem if we had the KEY that came with the program but that is lost as well and no one seems to remember who ordered it, when it was ordered or anything else for that matter. The original installer now lives in Russia and connnot be contacted. I need access to my server because there are current issues that must be corrected. Is there any way to get the numbers for the KEY. Instead of having to reformat the hard drive and lose tons of extremely valuable information?
A home-business file server question? If I've connected a Professional File Server device (such as this one: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11248) to a small home business based network, do I need server software...? (We are running a couple of iMac computers along with one PC desktop in our home office at the present time.) Is there any advantage to having server software in place in association with such a situation (e.g. Mac server software)? Or is it unnecessary...?
Best way to build a dedicated server for network storage.? I am trying to come up with the best way to add a dedicated storage that can be accessed from any computer on the network. I want this to be a small business file share system but we need to be able to store over 4 TB of data. So what is the best way to go about doing this?

Network / Computer Business : Cost of Services Question.? Thank you very much for any response. If asked, I can give more details. I have a Small Business on the side (because I hav a day job too.) and was wondering the following : 1. I charge $50.00 - $75.00 per hour for my services. This includes services such as Desktop Service to Server Networking Services. Does this charge sound fairly low to you? Please keep in mind I am just one Consultant. 2. I have found I am not charging for the hours worked. This may sound like 'duh... But when you are first starting from the ground up... Things are different and you learn from your mistakes. The question is, how do you work with a customer to have these Real Hours compared to Charged hours worked out? I have considered creating a form (that has to be signed of course) clarifying this and demonstrating the actual cost change would be. These sound like simple questions, but when you are involved with 6 different customer sites things can get a bit complicated. Any answers are greatky appreciated. Links are welcome, answers are preferred.
Do you need a server on this small office wireless network? Ok so basically its a small company and there are about 6 computers and there will never be more. They are all connected to the BT Business Hub (router) via wi/fi and a couple of printers connected to individual computers which are shared through the network. Only basic tasks are performed on the computers such as documents and internet browsing, nothing necessarily important. Everything works fine at the moment so i don't see the reason for a server. I did want to add shared storage to the network so i thought i may need a server for that but i realised i can just get a NAS and plug it straight into the BT business hub router so i still don't see the reason for a server. So will it be better be better with a server and how will it be? and how could i have a server on a wireless network anyway? im just wondering because i always hear that an office network should always have a server Thanks
servers for a small network? If i had a small business with 2 office workers and 6 mobile workers who used laptops in a video production company. It is necessary to send files back and forth between mobile workers and the office. Files must be available for downloaded during the day and also at night, when we are away from the office. These film files are usually between 512 MB and 2 GB in size. What servers would i need and y? i don't know much about servers.
Small Business Networking Help? I am replacing my business with macs instead of PCs. We are also adding internet connection to them, as well as them being all networked together. With that said: We are going to use a single mac pro as the file server. I know how to link all the computers using a network switch and ethernet cables, but this just links them together. If I also want to add them to the internet, do I have to have another open ethernet port, or can i somehow incorporate the internet into the other network switch, so it all runs on one cable? Also, if I want to print using just one printer, can i just plug the network printer into the switch with all the other computers? Thanks. also, a router means that the network has to be wireless right? I would like it to be all wired, as it has very secure data stored on the machines. And, if I did do it that way, would I just plug the internet source into the switch too?
DCHP Server? Hello, I am using Windows Server 2003 SBS. Now, a few months ago we had Windows Server 2003 running with a domain on it. That server broke down so we decided to get a new server and got Windows Server 2003 SBS with it. I have installed it and am configuring it how ever... I am trying to create a Domain and each time I try it comes up with an error "Setup detected an existing DHCP server. The network can support only one DHCP server. We recommend that you disable your existing DHCP server. Setup can then install the DHCP server provided by Windows Small Business Server." Now, we havent had a domain running on this network for months. The computers (all 5 of them) were running on a WORKGROUP and will soon be running on the new domain (once I set it up). The server with the other domain was taken off the network a while ago. What else could be causing this error? If this isn't the right place to ask this question where else could I go for assistance?
How do I set up my network? I own a small business and I want to set up a server-based network for a central data location. I only have 5 computers and I want a server that will also provide email, web, file & printer sharing, database, application, etc. I don't know if I need multiple servers or not and what all should I have, do I need an external storage or something extra besides the servers. I am pretty good with computers and how they work but I have little knowledge of servers. I would like to use Microsoft Small Business Server 2008.
NetWork + Server? I'm in process to start a small business, around 10 to 16 employees 16 hours with 2 shifts. Here is a bit of information before I ask my questions. I want to put a server in the office so that my employees can run the same application minimum of 6 and maximum of 10 employees will be using the same application at the same time while working. How many servers I should use? In what capacity of Hard Drive and RAM? What else should be included in the server? What do I need in order to connect all those computers with servers? Do I need fire wall? Can I use Internet at the same time with Network On? Do I have to pay to some company for the connection after the networking is done? I have been all over the internet and found alot, I would like to know it from members here what I should have/use? Please do not refer me to dell.com hp.com or any other website. Please reply only if you have had knowledge of Networking. Thank You.;
Small home office file server vs. dropbox.com? I have a small home office business. I need to network my 4 computers. I use quickbooks, proseries (tax program), LaserApp, microsoft office, etc. I want to have all the files for all my computers in one location, instead of having 4 different versions, moving files back and forth with a memory stick. I also need to share my 2 printers. I am not proficient with computers, and I can't spend 30 hours learning to use a file server. My requirements are as follows: 1.) Very simple, with as little to learn as possible 2.) Shared files stored in one location, accessible from any computer on my home network 3.) Ability to use all printers from any computer 4.) Speed and efficiency, low tolerance for downtime/wasted time 5.) Storage space of 500GB should be more than sufficient My first question is, would a file server such as HP's Proliant MicroServer with windows server 2008 Home or standard edition be suitable to my needs? What server software would be best, I only know the little info that I have googled. I have heard that Linux is more complicated to learn than Windows OS's. Is there a better small server with an OS pre-installed that is still in the price range of $500-$1,000? Secondly, I have tried the free version of Dropbox.com's file syncing software. It seems to work as advertised, though the saving/uploading seems a bit slow. The main advantage that has drawn me to it is the simplicity. After a couple hours of tinkering, I already feel like I know the basic ins and outs of the program. Dropbox would cost more in the long run and syncs kind of slow, so the file server would be preferable IF a simple to set up, easy-to-use model existed. What is your opinion on Server vs. Dropbox? Do you have a third alternative that you believe would better suit my needs? Is there any other info I should be aware of?
Will network performance improve if the server has a better internet connection than the users? My small business (3 employees) is getting rid of it's office. I'm thinking about putting our data server in my basement. I've been told the latency of my home broadband connection will be a problem (though the bandwidth is fine), and I should buy space from a hosting company. What I'm wondering is, with only 3 users accessing the server, since they are are all using home broadband connections, how will it help if my server has a better connection than my users?
Do I need to buy a separate OS for a backup server? I recently upgraded the computer network for the family business which involves a pretty expensive server (for the size of business). Anyway it's working great and has back up removable hard drives in case of failure so we don't lose our accounting and sales data. However, if the server were the fail, although we wouldn't lose our data. We would have no server to operate our software until we were to get the server fixed/replaced which could be anywhere from a day to a few weeks, which for any business is bad. Anyway I am thinking about buying a stripped down server just for in case of emergency type of situations that I can restore the data and get us back up and running within hours. The most expensive cost of the server though is actually the OS. Which is in this case Windows Small Business Server 2008 with about 10 licenses (it's like $2k alone). My only issue is I would be buying this whole new OS for a server computer that would literally just sit in a corner in case of emergency. Do I need to buy a whole new OS. Or theoretically could I just use the same OS and product key from my current server considering the licenses would be used for the exact same computers and the two servers should/would never be running at the same time anyway? ~G
How can I share an Outlook address folder, and map a drive over the internet on my office network? I'm running an 8 user peer to peer network in my office with Office and Outlook 2000, and currently everyone has their own Outlook folders, address books and we all map one server drive as a network shared document drive. We want to be able to firstly share an address book and set of folders for client emails whilst retaining private folders on each PC for personal emails/contacts, and also be able to map the network drive whilst working at clients premises. Is Microsoft Small Business server the answer and is it backward compatible with Office 2000? Thanks!
Windows 2K3 Server hardware failure. How should I proceed? At my house I run a Windows network complete with an Exchange server. This morning I got a message on my server ***Hardware Failure: Contact your vendor for support*** This message comes up after the Windows logo appears so it appears that the hard drive is okay and that some part of the hardware has failed. I have backups of my server but I am still left with a server that dies during loading Windows. Last week I purchased a server on which I had been planning to install W2K8 Small Business server to which I was going to migrate, in fact I started the install of the server software over the weekend. (I am halfway convinced that my old server detected the new one on the network and died in protest. :-) My home network is pretty simple. 1 server, 2 workstations and a laptop. 3 users; myself, my wife and my oldest child. I am now left with a couple of choices. I can figure out what is wrong with the hardware of my old server and finish the migration in a normal mode. My alternative is to simply bring the new server up as a fresh incarnation of my network infrastructure and find some way to import the 3 mailboxes from the old server. The only migration I have ever done was my upgrade from W2K to W2K3 and Windows took care of that for me. This a little different since I will have to transfer the mailbox files and get the new Exchange 2007 server to use the files. Any advice would be appreciated that does not recommend switching to Linux or some other Un*x variant. For clarification, it blue screens on the part of Windows when the system is coming up. I get the "Choose your operating system" choice and select "Windows 2003 Server" or let the timer expire. The Windows logo comes up and the system starts the part wherein it is loading the OS. It goes for a while and then blue screens, so I am guessing that it is failing when some device driver is trying to load. I never get the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to log in" message.
Any advice on starting a webhosting and computer consulting business? I have a friend of mine who has offered to set me up with a linux-based VPS, and was thinking of starting a webhosting business with this? In addition I was thinking about doing some consulting like setting up servers for small businesses, setting up home wireless networks, and PC repair? Any advice?
why dosen't my small business acct e-mail work? The e-mail account associated with my small business acct stopped working today - who do I report this to, and where can I find out about network or server problems and/or interuption that affect my services?
What is the best way to force users to use a VPN? The company is a small (50 stations) business with a number of the stations off site and we use a VPN to connect the computers to our network to update clients. How can we 'force' the users to log into the VPN as data for the clients is health related and needs to be secure. We use Microsoft's small business server.
How do you set up SBS2003 to work seamlessly with a separate linux postfix mail server? I have a working linux postfix mailserver on a windows network and I would like to set up the Small Business Server 2003 so that it works seamlessly with it if possible to be able to get the users email to and from it via outlook via their windows logon. The Linux mailserver has a different email domain to that of the domain controller. The email accounts are in the UNIX username format. IE. joebloggs which goes to joe@emaildomain.com. I can connect to the linux server via pop3 and imap no problem but just wondering if there is a fairly painless way to integrate this into the system for easy email transit? I think the sbs2003 server doesnt have roaming profiles set up and the users store their files locally for some bizarre reason. The sbs2003 wasnt set up by me as i'm more a Linux person than Windows Server. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks In Advance.
I need to find a IT Consultant to help me set up my Small Business? Where can I find a good one for good price I am in the process of opening an Online Business and I need a IT Professional (something like what Geek Squad does) to help me set up my Network, Business Systems, etc. Does anybody know what websites I can check out that might be helpful for me? I tried searching on google but found nothing, so if someone has some helpful information, some advice to point me in the right direction I would highly appreciate it. I just want to be sure that my business is running at full speed with everything that I need. I want to know how big of a Server I need, what type of systems I need, etc.. So anybody that can help with that information would be doing me a big favor. Thanks
I need help with my server? 4 Networking? I have a Windows Server 2003 Small Business Home and i want to use a wireless network for it, its a USB plug in, I need a software that can be use on it. INFO: Linksys Adapter Model : WUSB600N Server INFO: Computer converted into a Server, Windows Server 2003 Small Business Home. @RUTE I've try to do that but still won't work.
Get rid of IT company and do it myself? I was recently hired by a small company as a webdesigner/webdeveloper and general tech guy. My boss and coworkers don't know anything about computers so I'm pretty much the go-to guy for anything tech related. My boss is very displeased with our current IT company that takes care of our local network and website. The IT company has terrible service, they take forever to respond and charge huge fees. Since I'm the only person in our small company (15 employees) with computer knowledge (although limited networking experience), my boss wants me to find out how to get rid of the IT company and wants me to take care of the network/server in-house instead of paying the IT company lots of money for bad customer service. I did some research and found out that we're running Windows Small Business Server 2003 and use Exchange Server 2003 for email. The IT company is the registrar of our website domain name and they host the website files on their server (we pay them for hosting). They also do all the local network maintenance (I don't have the login info for the computer that runs the server). This is my plan of action so far: 1. Get the IT company to transfer our website domain name registration to us, and then I want to get a hosting plan somewhere else instead of the IT company's overly expensive plan. 2. Get the IT company to give me the login details for the Small Business Server so I can do the network maintenance myself. My main question is: How is our Exchange Server 2003 email system connected to our website domain? When the IT company transfers 'ourdomain.com' to us and I change the hosting location, does this affect our email system in any way? In other words, how can I transfer the website domain ownership and change the hosting location without affecting our email system. The IT company registered our domain with 1&1 and do the hosting on their own server. Any advise would be highly appreciated. Thanks.
The http://servername/connect... does not work for me nor does locating the server through the network set-up. Any suggestions will help.

IT Jobs in Ontario - Certifications? Hello I will be repatriating to Canada next year, after having lived in Europe for a few good years - and I was wondering if anyone who works within the IT industry can tell me which Microsoft certifications will help me land a job when I get there? I have a few months to take a Microsoft course, and I hear CompTIA A+ is required for many job postings... I have ten years working experience doing computer repairs, software and hardware trouble shooting, setting up networks and trouble shooting networks for small businesses (30 users), maintaining and updating small business servers, backup, building desktop pc's, managing networks and wireless networks, network printers, etc... so basically I need some certifications to show my various skills. I have been in contact with some Microsoft test centers where I live and they told me I should do the MCSA certification - but I'm not sure if this is widely asked for in Canada? Feedback from IT techs/network administrators/computer technicians would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Creating a small office Network. Should I consider thin clients? Hi, I am not a computer geek so must questions here may sound stupid... I am starting a new business (travel agency) and I would like to have a small network composed by 1 x server and 3 clients. I was browsing the Internet and I must say that I am very excited about how affordable are these thin clients...My question is if these thin clients would be the right thing for me... - I will be using a lot of Skype, Word, Excel and PDF files, Outlook email, MSN Messenger, My own live chat application, and be accessing my Customer & Sales program/database from the thin clients with a network Software called ACT! - Will these thin clients work right for these applications? Do you think that the small RAM memory of these thin clients can cope with these pre-loaded applications? My Skype out calls will be breaking up because of the slow processor of the thin client or its a matter only of Internet Bandwidth? Any restriction about using these programs with this Windows Embedded? Maybe I should use an external Hard Drive with Outlook/Internet browser (portable versions) to minimize network traffic? Your help is much appreciated! Roger.

Small business server network problem, please help? We just bought a new server and installed it, and the old one is still running. When we try to print something out or view the printer list the print spool kinda dies, and somehow you cant browse the server and network, until you restart the print spooler, and restarting the print spool takes ages. And also, we put the option for auto searching for printers off, and still the printers keep showing up after we removed them from the list Please help us, Thanks in advance, Havoz The new server is a windows small business server 2003

What's the best Server DR/Backup solution for a small business? I have a small business network of 15 computers currently running off of a single server and am currently using tape backup. I am looking for a new more comprehensive way of backing up as the business & number of network users etc is growing. We don't currently have a huge amount of data (sub 500gb) but as they company expands our requirements are too growing. Anyone have any advice on a cost effective solution? Thanks
A client has a small business network. She has asked you for advice on the operating systems to? use for five work stations and one server. She is interested in an operating system that can protect data stored on local systems. It is particularly important for her to be reasonably sure that some employees cannot access certain directories, even if they are logged on to the local system. She has more employees than systems, so they will share machines, and she wants to make sure that employees will not be able to read each other's files. The following is a list of additional requirements. • She wants all the operating systems to support native encryption. • The server she wants to purchase will store user accounts for the users on her small network. This server must be able to use USB ports because she also wants to use it as a scanner. • She wants to install the latest stable operating system
How does Microsoft® Small Business Server 2003 work? Will this program allow me to automate backups to external hard drive, network MS outlook 2007 and access user names and admin from any computer on the network? Does it have any type of easy - set up for new users?
Approx how much would someone charge to set up a small network? I have 5 WinXP machines on a router for internet access and very basic file sharing. Approximately how much would a computer guy charge to set up a Windows domain, Windows 2008 Small Business Server, and also reinstall windows on 2 of the WinXP machines? All server hardware will need to be purchased. Just looking for a ballpark range.
How much does it cost (service fee) to install Windows Network? I want to know how much the service fee to install the following: 1. Windows XP Professional Peer-To-Peer Network 2. Small Business Server 2003 Question? I have SBS 2003. All client computers are XP Pro SP 2. Everyday almost exactly 9 hours after logging on to the client computers, the connection to network resources (such as shared folders) seems to become unbearably slow until the client computer is restarted. Then it continues to become slow about every hour after. Granted I shouldn't be working 9 - 10 hour days, but i do. Anyway, it is not a utility or something that runs at the same time everyday because it completely depends on what time the client logs on. Also, logging off for lunch or whatever through the course of the day seems to make no difference. I am not even sure if this is coming from the server or the clients or the router for the network, but I have tweaked every setting I can find and had no luck. Any thoughts. Thanks
Estimate for a Small Business Network? I'd appreciate a rough estimate cost for a small business network might cut some corners by running Windows SBS 03 in a 7 user environment. I believe CAL's are only sold in blocks of 5. I will be building it myself. Cost from server it self to OS, switch , cat 6 etc etc. Mainly as a file server and manage users. Wanting to build a small network for business, someone plz help? OK. For this small business, I need to be able to access the "server" I guess from three users. Maybe just a past PC serving the trhee users would be suffice? What I need are three users, all being able to print to two seperate printers of thier choice. Three screens and keyboards, obviously, but all sending/recieving information wirelessly. Now, does each person have to have thier own tower? NO I dont thinks so, but, I do need this "server"(?) to be able to allow at least two people use the same programs at the same time in an efficient mannor. Like office programs and printing programs. Is this possible? I am certain I can walk into any store like best buy ar what have you and buy some type of wireless routing switch wich all three people send and recieve info to the host computer. So does anyone know what would be best? And Easiest? I know we need to stick w/ windows. So i suppose just a fast ass PC would work. So which OS should I use too. Thanks 4 all help
My server lost it's internet connection, but everything else works fine... how should i troubleshoot it? My small business network server (Dell) is 1 yr old and was set up by a local computer pro, whom I trust. I noticed recently the antivirus package wasn't updating the file defs, but everything else locally worked fine (local file sharing, etc). The server can't "see" the internet. I've checked the obvious (hard wire connections) and can't find any reason for the inability to connect. We can't really afford to hire a network pro to come troubleshoot, especially since productivity isn't affected. Can anyone please suggest what I should check in troubleshooting this problem. I would like to have the antivirus package working again. What to do???
What type of server for my small business? I am looking at purchasing a server for my small business and putting it in our new office. I am looking for a server that can house our phone system and house programs that we all use. I would like to be able to place the programs on the server, get a network license and allow anyone in the company to access and run the programs from anywhere they are at. What type of server should I be looking at? We are not very large and will not need a server that is too beefy, but one that can handle our growth. What are some good brands and types that I can pursue?
what is the best Client-server network to use ? What is the best Client-server network to use ? What would you suggest for the type of network topology and architecture for our small business? As well as trying to keep down cost becasue money is a factor as we are not a big enough business yet to dump tons of money on a IT department. What would be the advantages and disadvantages of your proposed network ? Ok if cost wasn't an option what would you suggest ?
Windows Server 2003 and Vista Clients? If I were to connect multiple client machines to a Windows Server 2003 or Windows Small Business Server 2003, is there a specific Vista version required? Would even Vista Home Basic clients be compatible. I was on the Dell website and I was customizing a machine, and it gave the option of "Upgrade to Vista Business so you can connect to network server". This I thought was kind of wierd, but anywho I am asking this just to make sure.

How to set-up a secure network and connection between multiple business sites? We are a small business that needs to integrate multiple (4) sites across the US. We are implementing a new CRM/ERP system that I would like my employees to access. Currently the CRM would run on a dedicated server at one specific site (thus securely available to all those network users), but the other three sites need to be able to access it. What is the best (and most economic) architecture? Thanks for all your help. Oz

Need information about creating a network for a business! Security, file transfer, comm, user accounts, etc!? Greetings! I am looking for as much information as I can get about creating a network for a small business. I was considering using Windows Server 2003, as I've heard good things about it. Does anyone know any specific advantages to this OS? Also, what is the best way to manage the way users access files. The company is going to do site hosting, programming and software design, and graphic design. Should the files be running from different servers for different departments? What are the best ways to manage the files? Can someone tell me about DFS? I've heard it is a good way to gives your employees access to the files? What are the advantages and disadvantages? How about user accounts? Which program is easy to manage, and gives me the most security options? I am looking for answers to these and other related questions, essentially I want to know everything there is to know about creating a network. Any advice is appreciated, and thank you in advance! Network hardware suggestions for small business.? Okay this is what we have and not sure what would fill in the gaps and work the most efficently. DSL coming into Netopia wireless router Patch cable to a Linksys 8 port switch from that we have ethernet cables running to: 2 desktop pc workstations (xp/os) 1 server (xp/os) additionally we have 2 desktop pc workstations (xp/os) wireless ----------------------------------------------------- The big gaps we need to fill (I think) include: 1. Adding a firewall and virus software (we only want internet access on our network for scheduled software updates) We have been advised that AVG Pro might be a good choice. 2.Would making and breaking that link to the internet be best done at the patch cable from the router to the switch? 3.Adding a network printer in the 200-300 dollar range. 4. How do we plug a cable modem to dial out from software to a phone line for credit card authorizations? Server to cable modem to phone jack? Thanks for any suggestions.
Out Look Web Access...!? Hello to All, My exchange server is configured for the external users to access OWA by putting the domain name like www.mydomainname.com/exchange, which is perfectly fine, and working. But one thing I have noted when I put the public IP of my router to access directly line http://XX.XX.XX.XX I found that the welcome page of windows small business server is coming like this:- My Company's Internal Web Site Collaborate and share documents on your company's internal Web site. Network Configuration Wizard Join a client computer to the Windows Small Business Server network. Remote Web Workplace Connect to the Windows Small Business Server network over the Internet. This seems to be a security hole & I don’t know how it is coming can any one please let me aware how it is coming and how can I disable but OWA users must continue access OWA without any interruption. Thanks for this favour.
