Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium on 2 Servers? Can I install Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium's Exchange on one server and the Domain and GP on a different server in the same environment? So basically, Server A: Domain and Files Server B: Exchange and Applications? Thanks!
Where can I buy Windows 2008 Small Business Server ? I have looked everywhere ( newegg, jr.com etc. ) but I can not find a link to buy Windows Small Business Server 2008. can you someone answer please?
Does Windows Small Business Server 2008 have built in FTP access? I know we can access our email remotely. I would like to use the FTP for employees and clients to upload large files that sometimes can't be emailed.
Windows Small Business Server 2008 question? We already have a windows 2003 server in place that runs the domain, we need to add another server to act as an application server, and were thinking about using Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium. My question is can we still use the 2003 server as the domain controller and use the 2008SBS as just a member server? Or do we have to upgrade the 2003 to 2008?
Microsoft Technet Small business server 2008? I was wondering if I buy the subscription to technet what is included. Specifically I'm looking for information on small business server 2008 such as how many cals are included, and if its possible to use terminal services with the version downloaded. Server 2003 is an option also
I need to practice techy skills on a MS 2008 Small Business server. I can't afford to buy one.? So I want to access one in the cloud for 2 weeks. Do you of a company that provides such a service? Or is it impossible? Thanks Ian
Where are user profiles stored for Active Directory in Server 2003/2008? I'm migrating a server from 2003 to 2008, both are Windows Small Business server. I need to know where the user profiles are stored in 2003, and where they should end up in 2008.
Should we use RAID1 or RAID5 for a Windows 2008 Server (acting as database/file server for a small business)? BACKGROUND: Our IT suppliers are telling us that hard disk reliability is such that RAID1 (using 2 hard disks) is sufficient and that we do not need RAID5 (using 3+ hard disks). We are a small company with less than 25 employees. What are the pros & cons? Any thoughts? Ship Shiperton Henethe
Account Grouping in SBS 2008? My company uses Windows Small Business Server 2008 Standard and I am trying to make 3 guest accounts for volunteers who come in to help. Is there any way for me to group those accounts so that someone can login with one user name and have it login to 1 of the 3 accounts?
Do I need to buy a separate OS for a backup server? I recently upgraded the computer network for the family business which involves a pretty expensive server (for the size of business). Anyway it's working great and has back up removable hard drives in case of failure so we don't lose our accounting and sales data. However, if the server were the fail, although we wouldn't lose our data. We would have no server to operate our software until we were to get the server fixed/replaced which could be anywhere from a day to a few weeks, which for any business is bad. Anyway I am thinking about buying a stripped down server just for in case of emergency type of situations that I can restore the data and get us back up and running within hours. The most expensive cost of the server though is actually the OS. Which is in this case Windows Small Business Server 2008 with about 10 licenses (it's like $2k alone). My only issue is I would be buying this whole new OS for a server computer that would literally just sit in a corner in case of emergency. Do I need to buy a whole new OS. Or theoretically could I just use the same OS and product key from my current server considering the licenses would be used for the exact same computers and the two servers should/would never be running at the same time anyway? ~G
Windows Server 2008 /2003 and exchange 2007/2003? Hello, On our company we have 70 pcs and we are going to change windows server 2000 small business server to another windows server with new hardware. It is a good idea to change to windows server 2008, or use the 'old' 2003 ? (2008 is enough 'ready' ?)... the same question goes for exchange 2003/2007. I suppose we don't have to change our xps machines and our officeS 2003 clients, isn't it ? Somebody have experience on it (blogs, webs,...) ? Thanks in advance !
Which development and server platforms should I employ for a new small business? Hello, I am looking to get back into programming as I really enjoyed it at uni in Cape Town and now have a few business ideas I'd like to try in the UK. I'm a bit out of the game over the last few years and I need some advice as to software. Requirements are: A. It must be legal for commercial, small business (profit) use, B. It will be used in development by no more than 4 programmers I plan to use one server with some redundancy built in; now should I have a standalone with windows server 2008 r2 installed along with SQL Server 2008 r2 installed? Which version of each based on the above requirements as there are so many choices with vastly different prices (I will be using 64-bit)? I plan to use web forms and ASP.net 4.0 so should I use visual studio 2010 professional edition or should I be looking at premium for more than one programmer? Or in fact is there a cheaper version I can use for commercial employment given that it's ASP.net I want and not all the application tools that vs.net offers? Many thanks for any help you can offer. Cheers, Lynton
Windows Server 2008 vs 2003? Hello, I am the manager of a small IT department for a small company. Only have 3 servers but we want to buy all new servers with new OS's. Should I buy them with Server 2008 or 2003? I know 2003, not so much about 2008. With a small business is 2003 enough? What are some of the major differences and what would you recommend? Thank You, Adam
What kind of server should I build for our small business network? Hello. I am a little new to the server world. I was wondering what type of server I should get for setting up active directory, DNS, FTP, mail, and a web host. I want all of our users documents to be on the server, I want to be able to deploy Windows XP through every computer (in other words I need a network boot with a ghost image or any image to restore the OS and drivers for that type of computer specific to the image). Here are my current specs: http://presidentialdebtsolutions.com/ServerRig/Server%20Build.htm This is what I wish to build. It will be running at most about 25 computers. Will this suffice? Using Windows Server 2008. Also. Is it possible to leave the 2nd CPU slot empty until we decide to add a second Xeon CPU? Thanks. I will be running Raid 1 on the two 1TB drives to preserve data.
small business network help!!!? OK so i'm setting up my small business network, i have a server running windows server 2008 R2, 3 computers running windows 7 professional (all 64-bit). my problem is i have 8 users for the 3 computers, I want to have it so all my users can log onto any of the computers and have their files that are on the server. Where should i start to do this. a friend told me i need to set up active directory and a domain for my network. However, after endlessly trying to configure it i have slowly given up.Starting a fresh re-installing server 2008 i am hoping someone may have a good guide that is suited to me or can tell me what i need to do. thanks
Can someone advise me on this network setup? As storage is my main emphasis in this network (I plan to have 2 Terabytes of data total and I would like to have a backed up copy of this size as well). Will I need two servers because the one with my software on it doesn’t want an active directory run on it? I’m also a little confused about how the file sharing will work with the Network Attached Storage device, does Windows Server have something in it to implement this? Also from a security standpoint what would I need to address in Windows if I have a NAS, will Windows file sharing be secure between the users/server/clients? My point with the NAS was to save money and separate the data from the server processor (only OS+apps)…also the cheapest servers on Dell have about a 2.4GHZ processor and a 160GB hardrive for about 1600….would buying a nice desktop and putting Windows Server 2008 on it be a better option?? I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned? The biggest point is that I want my system to be low maintenance, easy to setup, and my switch to be un-managed (aka no IT expert needs to be around to configure the ports…etc) I've heard that the remote device can be a security issue....but I've looked around and it seems difficult to find a server (such as from dell or HP) that has 2 Terabytes of redundant (RAID 1) hard drive space. Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I also thought separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldn't have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous.

How do I set up my network? I own a small business and I want to set up a server-based network for a central data location. I only have 5 computers and I want a server that will also provide email, web, file & printer sharing, database, application, etc. I don't know if I need multiple servers or not and what all should I have, do I need an external storage or something extra besides the servers. I am pretty good with computers and how they work but I have little knowledge of servers. I would like to use Microsoft Small Business Server 2008.
Small home office file server vs. dropbox.com? I have a small home office business. I need to network my 4 computers. I use quickbooks, proseries (tax program), LaserApp, microsoft office, etc. I want to have all the files for all my computers in one location, instead of having 4 different versions, moving files back and forth with a memory stick. I also need to share my 2 printers. I am not proficient with computers, and I can't spend 30 hours learning to use a file server. My requirements are as follows: 1.) Very simple, with as little to learn as possible 2.) Shared files stored in one location, accessible from any computer on my home network 3.) Ability to use all printers from any computer 4.) Speed and efficiency, low tolerance for downtime/wasted time 5.) Storage space of 500GB should be more than sufficient My first question is, would a file server such as HP's Proliant MicroServer with windows server 2008 Home or standard edition be suitable to my needs? What server software would be best, I only know the little info that I have googled. I have heard that Linux is more complicated to learn than Windows OS's. Is there a better small server with an OS pre-installed that is still in the price range of $500-$1,000? Secondly, I have tried the free version of Dropbox.com's file syncing software. It seems to work as advertised, though the saving/uploading seems a bit slow. The main advantage that has drawn me to it is the simplicity. After a couple hours of tinkering, I already feel like I know the basic ins and outs of the program. Dropbox would cost more in the long run and syncs kind of slow, so the file server would be preferable IF a simple to set up, easy-to-use model existed. What is your opinion on Server vs. Dropbox? Do you have a third alternative that you believe would better suit my needs? Is there any other info I should be aware of?
Windows SBS - Exchange and public MX? Hi there. I'm a senior web developer for a small firm and have been charged with looking at the setup of Windows Small Business Server 2008 and migrating our company email to Exchange. This server will be locally hosted by us. I don't see myself doing this, but I wanted to get a bit of an understanding of how it would work, as my primary experience with email is on *Nix based machines. My question is: How is security handled when the email system is sitting on the same box as something so sensitive as company wide data? Usuually our *Nix based soultions are publically accessable machines either acting as dedicated email servers, or dual purpose web servers. This allows us to simply point any domain MX records to the public IP. But I am a bit worried on how this will be done when the email server is effectively within our private network. Firewall is the first thing that comes to mind. But frankly, our internal data servers have been completely offline in the past. Ta Aaron
Search across shared outlook contacts within Exchange 2007? We are running Small Business Server 2008, I have created a security group for office staff, added that group to all user mailboxes with full permissions. I can add any users contacts to an office staff contact page. We need to be able to search all users from a single search pane, not having to click on each users contact folder to search. Goal is to be able to locate a particular person or address if a client calls in and does not know the name of the salesman who called on them. Public contacts will not work since we need to be able to notify the specific salesperson who initiated communication with the contact.
Windows 2008 Server and Peachtree? Hello, I need a little help on my project. I want a get a server where clients can access to it remotely (5 clients at the most). The server must have a software program that my small business uses which is Peachtree (will buy the 5 client license version). I will buy the computer server and install the software on it myself (first timer). Any suggestions on the best way to do this? Thanks for your help, if there is another-better way to do this project let me know please! So far I know I need: Computer Server, Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit 5CAL, Peachtree 5CAL, and a location for the server which is the office.
do I need to do anything when disposing of a business computer? I run a small business and bought several computer servers in 2008 and 2009. One became faulty recently and I got rid of it (donated on freecycle). The other is a bit old and needs replacing I claimed VAT and business expenses on these. Are there any records I need to keep to prove I've disposed of them (either giving them away or selling them)?

what are the best magazines to determine the best components to buy to set up a network for a small business? (e.g., dell or hp, ms server os 2003 or 2008? should we match the server equipment to the desktop equipment?)
Is SQL Server skill marketable? I'm currently a State employee worried about cuts and layoffs looming in governments. I have roughly 9 years of IT experience, not all of them FT, and some of years were slacking years. I'm currently expected to be jack of all trade, and some of my work includes with SQL server 2008 R2 administration, and SQL reporting server administration and development. I am studying for MCTS 70-432 and after that I'll also do MCTS in SQL server 2008 business intelligence because they're related to my current job tasks. However, if I were to get thrown into the job market, are such skills marketable? It seems like in medium to large companies, Oracle still has large market share so some companies may say they're not interested in SQL server skills. Small companies simply may not have enough money to use SQL or Oralce so they seems to be using Access. So I expect problems from Oralce and Access market shares if I get thrown into the job market due to the current economic problems in US. What it your observation and/or opinion? To employers, SQL and Oralce may be like Windows Vs. Mac. They may say, "Ok, you're a Windows person, but we're looking for someone who knows both WIndows and Mac."
Few questions about servers and server software? If anyone can answer any of these then thanks a lot. 1) What to use mssql for in server, i know it's a database but it would be overkill for a small business right, would it be used mainly for email storage with MS exchange, what else would you likely store in it, i guess mysql would be as good? 2) How do you setup outlook on the server, you install office on the client pc, do you just install the extact same office files on the server or do you not need a "back-end outlook server setup", just configure it in exchange? 3) How good, or bad, is windows home sever, how would it compare to server 2003, can you run all the apps, like excahnge, ISA server, can you configure, dns, dhcp, routing etc, what would hold you back you with this server OS? 4) I have just heard of Windows Essential Business Server and it has a pricey tag, so again how does this compare to server 2003/2008? Thanks.
Remote access to Sharepoint with SBS 2007? My company just bought a small business server which will run SBS 2008. Will our remote employees be able to connect to our sharepoint site to view/checkout documents? Will I need additional software (besides what comes bundles with sbs 2008) to do this?
Backup software to run on a server? for my small business we have a new server that holds our shared files and we would also like to run backups of our individual computers but we need a program - free, if at all possible - that is windows server 2008 x64 compatible thanks in advance
Where Do I Go From Here? Hi, This going to sound strange, but I am in the process of finding another job, and i am scared to death about it. The last job I had was back in 2002, and haven't worked a REAL job as some people put it in 8 years. I went back to school in 2003 and finished in 2004 for Server and Desktop Administration and walk down the stage with my head held high for graduating, despite not having family supporting me. I had self employed for a short period to have money in my pocket for a while. After suffered a illness back in 2005. I filled out the paper work for the feds, state, and county for my business back in 2008 to make my business legal. People here in Detroit, do not appreciate the services I provide as a computer repair tech., and I am damn tired of them wanting a discount off the price I charge. And now, I just feeling like giving up my business and do something else. I have 5 years of experience of troubleshooting and repairing PC's, laptops, virus removal, installing hardware and software, using a 3rd party for data recovery, upgrading hardware and software, and showing people how to use their computers, and setting up wireless and wired networks for homes and some businesses. Since, I updated my resume, and looked at the want ads, I am so scared to fill out the applications, due to the fact that they are looking for people with degrees and experience with other software that I am not familiar with like 2008 server, 2003 server, and 2003 server small business. It feels like its my fault when I got sick for going further than other people. But, I know some tricks of the trade by watching others get a dead PC started and etc. I am good with Windows, 95, 98, NT, 2000 Professional, Windows ME, XP, Vista, and last, Windows 7 . Do I just give up and do something else or just say Dammit, i'm good enough for this position and go for it. Or just get my business off the ground and just do it. Last, just start all over again, because of some people say that I am loser at the age of 35 and I should just work mopping a floor and flipping burgers. Any words of encouragement is welcomed. Any negativity will be deleted. Thanks
Advise of who to hire in my business? Hello. I am in a bit of a quandary. I am the owner/chef of a small, fine-dining establishment and recently had a server position open up. My wife manages the restaurant. I had many applicants but only two meet the experience requirements that I deemed necessary to qualify for the position. Most of the other applicants didn't have enough or have any experience and this is NOT an entry-level job. I am truly at a loss as to which of these applicants to hire. I'm curious as to what others think. I've already asked the advice of some other small business owners and I will detail their recommendations as well. Candidate #1 is a full-time college student (Jr. year) who lives at home. She attends classes in the mornings and the position is a late afternoon/evening only job. She meet the minimum requirement that I stipulated which was 4 years experience in a full-service restaurant (2 yrs. fine dining). I informed her that this job would demand that she work at least five nights a week and, on ocassion, six nights. I also told her that I couldn't permit any off time for final exams or special projects and whatnot. Her references were generally good but hesitated when I asked if they would rehire her. They didn't say no, but two of the three declined to answer. Also, she's worked at four different restaurants in the last four years and I'm looking for someone who is going to stay for at least 2 years if not longer. Her major is fashion marketing and she will graduate next spring but told me she planned on doing graduate studies at the same university where she is currently enrolled. She came across as friendly and personable in the interview but was sketchy on her knowledge of wine (this is important) and new American cuisine. She did express an eagerness to learn. When I asked for her alcohol seller's permit and food handler's certificates, she explained that she had allowed them to lapse but would be able to renew them easily before beginning employment. I do know that this is fairly easy for someone who has already had the permits. Candidate #2 is a professional waiter who has a total of 12 years experience, seven of them in fine dining. He had fairly extensive knowledge of both wines, the cuisine that I cook, and general operations and expectations in a fine dining environment. His permits and certificates were current and valid. His references were good but somewhat dated. He came across in the interview as articulate, knowledgeable, and was considerably better dressed than candidate #1. He is also college educated but with a 2 year degree. He is not attending college currently and is living with his wife. For me, this gentleman would have been the clear choice except for one thing: he is a convicted felon who served two years in prison for prescription fraud. He also had a DWI a number of years ago. He was released in 2008 and has completed all of his legal obligations. I have verified this. Candidate #2 explanation in the interview was that he was involved in a serious car accident in 2005, was prescribed narcotics for pain management and subsequently developed a dependency on the medication he was taking. When he disclosed his dependency to his physician, the doctor abruptly cancelled the prescription. He said that he was unable to cope with the severe withdrawal symptoms that accompanied the discontinuation of this prescription and thereafter forged the prescriptions. He was caught, convicted, and was confined for two years for this crime. His employer during this time period told me that he was a good employee; They weren't aware of his dependency and didn't know why he resigned (this resignation coincided with the begining of his prison term). I have received conflicting advise from other business owners on this matter. Some believe in giving Candidate # 2 a second chance particularly since he is by far the more qualified of the two applicants. Others have told me that, for reasons of legal liability and insurance, they would never hire an ex-offender no matter what their level of education, skills, experience, how good their references were or how distant in the past the conviction was. The conviction itself is an automatic disqualifier (even though my application says the opposite - "not necessarily a disqualifier"). Both the references and the interview tipped in favor of candidate # 2 and I genuinely liked this man but I just can't get past that felony conviction and prison term even though this gentlemen is free and clear now. I'm curious as to what others think, particularly if you are a small business owner or manager. Thank you for your time in reading this.
Advise on who to hire for my business? Having trouble even getting an interview for a graduate IT job? Ok i lost my job about 3 months ago now under a stupid 90 day rule and the business said they couldn't afford me. I went to my employment agency afterwards and redid my CV etc. I handed out a few cold CVs to businesses and some of those businesses were really impressed with my CV but had no positions available. Plus a lot of other people have seen my CV and say its great and I even have an IT guy I know act as a mentor and he really likes it. The big problem is when I apply for an IT graduate job that has advertised I can't even get an interview. They just say there are candidates better qualified and have more experience. I know they are full of BS when they say that. I have an IT uni degree and 6 months IT work experience applying for jobs that require no experience. My CV is below. Anyone have any ideas why I keep getting turned down at the first step. Problem with Networking Two PCs? Networking Problem Internet is a magnificent medium to find solutions for your PC problem. I got help from it on numerous occasions and I am really thankful to the technology for it. However, despite of asking many times on many forums and trying everything given on the internet, my networking experience has been a nightmare so far. In 2007 I first tried to connect two PCs through LAN wired router, both PCs were using windows XP and guess what, my first try was a success but it was a matter of time when I realised that it was not more than just beginner’s luck because since then I’ve tried countless times but it never happened again. Now let me go into the detail. I’m using two P4 PCs with Windows XP professional, both have LAN built-in to the mother board. I have Broadband internet connection which can be used at one PC at a time. Both PCs can connect to the internet without any problem but when I try to connect them to each other, Ping request gives request denied. The only change since the first successful try I remember of is the use of Avast Antivirus, at that I time I had McAfee installed but I stopped avast antivirus and tried again with no success. Here is the list of things I did to setup networking on my computers. 1.All the wires are connected properly; I am sure about this because they both can connect to internet. 2.I ran the Setup for Home or small business netwrk in XP. 3.In PC-A I gave it IP address 192.168.10.1 subnetmask 255.255.255.0 and in PC-B I gave it IP address 192.168.10.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0. 4.Enabled Netbios over TCP/IP 5.Disable firewall 6.Disabled avast antivirus 7.Workgroup of both PCs is MSHOME 8.Following services necessary for networking are running Server, Workstation and Computer Browser. (Please note that other services related must also be running because both PCs can connect to internet). 9.File sharing is on With all these things done, I cannot still get even a ping reply. I did the same in 2008 but at that time I was able to ping the computers and could not share the files because I could not access the PCs and kept on getting Unreachable message. This time around I cannot even ping the computers. Please please help me Muhammad Ali
Please help me with this case study.? Gem Infosys a small software company has decided to better secure their computer systems after a malware attack shut down their network operations for two full days. The organization uses a firewall, three file servers, two web servers, one Windows 2008 Active Directory server for user access and authentication, ten PCs and a broadband connection to the Internet. The management at Gem needs you to formulate an incident response policy to reduce network down-time if future incidents occur. Develop an incident response policy that covers the development of incident response team, disaster recovery process and business continuity planning. Yes, that's one way to look at the meaning of case study. A case study is where you analyze a situation and give a solution "The case should have enough information in it that can understand what the problem is and, after thinking about it and analyzing the information, the readers should be able to come up with a proposed solution." Ever thought that this is an example case study to be answered? I'm trying to answer different exercises in this book to review myself for the upcoming finals and it says "case study" so don't blame me if you want a real "case study." The question, can anyone help throw in more ideas to find a solution? "Develop an incident response policy that covers the development of incident response team, disaster recovery process and business continuity planning."
network design homework? Adventureworks Corporation is a business process outsourcing (BPO) company catering to a clientele who sought out their needs for call support and back-end processing to 3rd party vendors. The company started in 2007 as a small enterprise focusing on call center operations with 100 agents divided into two 8-hour shifts (morning and night shifts) that accepts incoming calls. As the company outgrew its targets and expanded massively in 2008, they hired 80 additional agents for its call center operations. For their expansion into medical transcription business, they also hired 60 medical professionals. By 2009, 50 more employees were hired to focus on back-end processing, where activities include data encoding, journaling and finance support. Today, the company has 320 employees and is targeting to double this number in 2 years’ time and by 2015, their stretch goal is to increase their coverage and cater to global customers with 1200 employees. Adventureworks Corporation currently serves 14 call center, 4 medical transcription and 2 back-end processing accounts. They have an IT staff pool of 4 personnel servicing the desktops and servers which are currently not centrally managed. A total of 160 desktops, 140 of which are deployed to the account projects while the remaining are used by administration, finance, human resources, sales, marketing and IT personnel. Each desktop was purchased with applications pre-installed. For each of the accounts served by the company, a dedicated server is purchased for the repository of documents and files related to each. During a review, the following concerns were raised and the top management is determined to make the necessary changes that will have the optimum impact to the productivity of the employees while minimizing cost: • Lack of security in the file servers • No central management tool for the users as well as the desktops and servers • Information and resources are redundant and not shared • Access to email and information via internet is unavailable to employees • No web presence or website where prospective accounts or customers may view the profile and case studies of Adventureworks Corporation The requirements defined above are just some of the things they identified as priority requirements although the management acknowledges that additional services may be implemented to further improve their efficacy and efficiency as an organization. As an IT consultant, you were asked to submit a bid for this project. You are required to submit the following as a proposal for the said project: 1. Scope of the project 2. Network infrastructure design 3. List of all components that needs to be purchased and cost 4. Total project cost (including your company’s service fee)
DHCP server hardware help? At work we have a closed, multi-location network. I'd like to assign static IPs to a few of the computers. I know the IP address of the device acting as the DHCP server for the network, but I have no clue which piece of actual hardware it is. (Originally I had assumed it was the server running Windows Small Business Server 2008, but as it turns out, I was wrong.) Is it possible to determine the actual hardware from the IP address?
Server upgrade question? We already have a windows 2003 server in place that runs the domain, we need to add another server to act as an application server, and were thinking about using Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium. My question is can we still use the 2003 server as the domain controller and use the 2008SBS as just a member server? Or do we have to upgrade the 2003 to 2008? Thanks

Approx how much would someone charge to set up a small network? I have 5 WinXP machines on a router for internet access and very basic file sharing. Approximately how much would a computer guy charge to set up a Windows domain, Windows 2008 Small Business Server, and also reinstall windows on 2 of the WinXP machines? All server hardware will need to be purchased. Just looking for a ballpark range.
Is this a good argumentative speech? I wrote this in about 7 hours and I need to know if this is a good speech or if there is anything I should change or fix. The Subject is Censorship, and I am arguing against censorship. So Please give me your honest opinion. (Sorry for my messy grammer/spelling it's 2:39.) Censorship effects us all, be it through race, religion, government party or income. Everyone in this room will be effected by censorship one way or another. There are so many types of censorship: Moral, Military, Religious, Political, Corporate and Creative just to name a few. Corporate Censorship is when media outlets intervene to stop the publishing of information that may depict their business or business associates in an adverse light. Privately owned corporations that report news also can refuse to share information that may cause loss of advertiser revenue or shareholder value which negative publicity may bring. The Telecommunications Act is a law that Canadian telecommunications common carriers like Telus, Bell Canada and Verizon are regulated. The Telecommunications act at the time was not favored by the media. Records show that there were only 12 major news stories about the Telecommunications act and a total of 19.5 minutes of air time accumulated over those stories. Much of the coverage of the new act was centered around the television content ratings and the V-chip while the considerable changes to the ownership rules of the media were almost completely ignored. Only bits and pieces of the opinions that the Critics of the legislations had were shown on air, because the legislations directly profited the media. Newspapers can actually refuse to run commentary they don’t agree with as well. Black Press owns over 95 newspapers in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and other places outside of Canada. If the owner of these newspapers disagreed with new laws that were passed that could change lives, they could not print it. That is complete corporate censorship. Religious Censorship has been an issue that has been occurring as far back as you can flip any text book. Far back in ancient times Sorcery books worth 50,000 silver were burnt by Paul’s converts at Ephesus. They have tried to completely eliminate an entire religion all together with the Holocaust! The Da Vinci Code was attacked by various religious groups, saying that Dan Brown was a Satanist and was going to hell. The movie was even banned in Samoa. Everyone knows who Harry Potter is, the FICTIONAL orphan boy that learns he is a wizard and goes to a school for wizards. Religious groups want to ban these books from being sold, and these movies from being seen. Some Catholic followers believe that Harry Potter glamorizes Wicca, a religion involving the thought that magic can be created by “Manipulating through the form of Witchcraft or Sorcery”, but at no time is the religion advertised during the books nor movies. If this is not evidence that censorship is occurring more than anyone would have thought, take a look at China. Though blocks to certain websites may not apply to different cities, and they have been lifted for certain occasions, they are still BLOCKING websites. Their most recent major website was access to The New York Times which was blocked on December 20, 2008. Most foreign websites are still available for mainland China, but a few websites such as the Chinese-language service of BBC continue to be blocked and unblocked. Regardless of the small number of blocked sites, the mere fact that the government is starting to block off sites that have no reason to disappear is enough to raise suspicion. The Golden Shield project ( Also referred too as The Great Firewall Of China ) was created and is owned by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China. It was created in 1998 and was actually used In the beginning of 2003. The Golden Shield Project’s job is to block Content on the internet. It does this by stopping IP addresses from being routed through and is made up of standard firewalls and proxy servers at the Internet gateways. The system also selectively engages in DNS poisoning when particular sites are requested. The government does not appear to be methodically examining Internet content, because it is technically impractical. The Censored Content includes but is not limited too: *Websites that are about or are related to the Falun Gong spiritual practice, which is not only internet censorship but religious as well. *News Sources that cover topics such as: Police Brutality, Freedom of Speech or Democracy *The Chinese Wikipedia which has been recently unblocked *Any major Newspaper and television media that contain information on the Taiwanese Independence. *Sites that are linked with the Dalai Lama and his involvement with the International Tibet Independence Movement If you think that China’s internet problems could never get to Canada, Think again.
