How do you change the domain on Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003? I've got SBS2003 running on a server. When we set it up we used a xxxx.local domain and that's not what I want anymore. I want to run it as a normal domain (a different one than is used right now) and I'm not sure how to change it other than starting over with a new reinstall which I think is a bad idea. So, can I make some changes to point the server to a new domain name that will change Exchange, Sharepoint, etc.? I'm trying to make it so that I can have a Sharepoint website be external (http://www.xxxx.com/sharepoint or something) and also change the domain that Exchange references. I used to have a business and that's the domain that's being used but now I want to change it to something else. Any help is appreciated.
Whats the difference between "Small Business Server 2003" & "Server 2003 for Small Business Server"? I was placed in charge of setting up a network and server at work a few weeks ago and I've been having a lot of trouble getting things to work. They bought "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 for Small Business" in addition to an extra set of licenses that is for "Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003" I am realizing that there is a difference between "Small Business Server" and "Server FOR Small Business". What is the difference and most importantly what is "Server FOR small Business" used for? Currently my server is running Server 2003 for small business server. This is my first built server and network but i have built over 25PC's so am somewhat familiar with hardware and Windows OS. Can anyone help me? So far it is confirmed that what I have allows only 15 user clients and geared toward file and print sharing. It is also a seperate OS from Small Business Server 2003.

microsoft small business server setup problem? i recently buy a microsoft small biz server 2003 standard edition, i started out to install the software by booting my system from my DVD drive on my intended computer for server installation, but when i try to install on the selected drive, it notify an error saying my harddisk do not have the compatible partition with the windows, but in fact i have an ntfs format on that partition,i delete the partition and try again, but it notify me the same error and tell me to create a partition with the compatible format, i know from my prior experience that the partition can only be created during installation, but it refuse my to install, so how can i do
Microsoft Server 2003 and Windows Update? I have a small Business with a server running Microsoft Server SQL 2003 and i was wondering if there was a way from the server how i could update computers on the network without doing it for each computer individually? I know you can do this with a mac server but i wasnt sure how to do it with windows
Microsoft Windows server 2003? I have a small business with around 5 computers on a home style network with the computers accessing a folder through a network drive. However I am looking to upgrade the network by installing a server onto which I can store and backup my data. I am looking for a Windows Server license but I am a bit confused to how the licensing works. Will this product alone enable me to install Windows Server onto a computer and allow workstations on Windows 7 to connect to the domain and access the files?
Microsoft Server 2003 CAL license check? I found a set of new original discs of Windows Small Business Server 2003 that i believe were never used before. So i want to sell them on ebay. The problem is i have no idea how many CAL licenses are included in the set or how to check that the keys were really never used before. There are 3 different product key stickers. One on each DVD box (2) and another one on the Front Page 2003 cd sleeve. Is there anyway to check online the status of these keys and find how many CAL this set of discs support, and also confirm that it was never activated? Thank you BTW. this is a "Promotional sample, not for resale" set, but i removed the stickers and don't care about it. I believe the keys will not have any difference or limitations because of this anyway right? Please answer if you really know about how these licenses work. UPDATE.. i just found the CAL agreement papers inside the getting started book and it is for 5 licenses. So never mind about that. What i would like to check is if the keys were never used before. Thanks again
How to choose server and transfer from old server to the new one? We have some severs on Windows NT including domain servers (for about 20 machines), web server, email server, ftp server and the firewall. We wanted to buy a new server to combine all these existing servers into one machine. What kind of machine we need to choose (we will choose among Dell servers). What kind of operating system we need to choose (Microsoft Small Business Server) ? How to make the transition from the existing servers to the new server as smooth as possible? Thank you for your reply!

Starting a small business- designing small business/home Networks? I would like to start a side business designing and implementing small business/home networks. I'm just wondering how feasible this is at my current experience/education level. I am currently in a Bachelors degree program; at an associates degree level in Information Technology with a main focus in Network Administration (4.0GPA to date). I am familiar with and understand subnetting (VLSM concepts), Windows Server topics, such as, Active Directory, DNS, file management and utilities etc. I believe I'm very close to taking and passing CompTIA A+ and an MCTS exam, specifically 70-640. My course line ups are all geared towards Microsoft Server and Linux Administrating. I also have 5+ years of desktop support in a call center environment. I've setup several small networks over the years and a small Windows Server 2003 domain at home. I do not have any wiring experience (recommendations on how to learn that would be helpful- with limited income).
Can you download Microsoft ActiveX control using Mac OS? The website/server (Windows Small Business Server 2003) I use to acces my PC at work comes up with this message when I try login, anyone know how to bypass this using Mac OS vs. Microsoft? "This portion of the Remote Web Workplace requires the Microsoft Remote Desktop ActiveX Control. Your browser's security settings may be preventing you from downloading ActiveX controls. Adjust these settings, and try to connect again."
Windows Server 2003: How large a company to stop thinking about buying CALs? Everyone, thank you so much for looking at this! We are researching Microsoft's licensing policies, and there are certainly lots of options...some even have to be uncovered by stealthy negotiations! Small business buyers of Server 2003 have to buy CALs...no way of getting around that. But, larger companies can buy unlimited CAL licenses, right? Or site licenses? To get around buying the individual CALs? My question is this: What is the threshold of company size, where it no longer makes rational sense to buy individual CALs or CAL-packs, and instead buy some non-CAL type of license? Where can one make a mistake...hidden pitfalls? Thank you again for your opinions and answers! -Suzi

Window Server 2003 share point services 2.0 error? So the our windows 2003 small business server automatically was updated last night by Microsoft. It was then automatically restarted. Normally this works fine. When I got into the office i noticed the error message that at least 1 service or driver failed at start up and then it said to see events log. So I checked the events log and it is giving me this error message. Windows share point services 2.0 error. It is giving me this error 3 times or so per minute in the event log. None of our desktop computers can access the server. Anyone know what the problem might be? thanks

NDR message from Exchange, status 5.1.3, action failed? Any message I attempt to send to any user on the server either from another user on the server or from an outside user is immediately returned undeliverable with the following message: Reporting-MTA: dns;mydomain.com Final-Recipient: unknown;robin@mydomain.com Action: failed Status: 5.1.3 These users are already setup in "Active Directory Users and Computers" each with an Exchange mailbox. I've verified that I'm using the correct alias from within the "Exchange General" tab and that is the same alias as the SMTP e-mail address already specified in "E-mail Addresses" (except the e-mail address ends with the appropriate "@mydomain.com", specific to my actual domain). I'm running Exchange on Microsoft Windows 2003 Small Business Server Standard.
Can someone advise me on this network setup? As storage is my main emphasis in this network (I plan to have 2 Terabytes of data total and I would like to have a backed up copy of this size as well). I will also be using cat 5 wiring, Kaspersky Anti-virus, and I am thinking about using either Microsoft Ftp publishing (comes with Windows Server 08) for file transferring and maybe Filezilla or WinSCP for remote access The odd thing is that my main software program (EClinical Works) specs a minimum of: Quadcore Xeon 1.4 Ghz, Windows Server 2003/2008, 4GB of memory, at least 16GB (OS) + 30GB (Data) But the oddest thing is that they say the server with this EClinical software shouldn’t run an active directory, RAS, and/or terminal service. Will I need two servers because the one with my software on it doesn’t want an active directory run on it? My point with the NAS was to save money and separate the data from the server processor (only OS+apps)…also the cheapest servers on Dell have about a 2.4GHZ processor and a 160GB hardrive for about 1600….would buying a nice desktop and putting Windows Server 2008 on it be a better option?? I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned? The biggest point is that I want my system to be low maintenance, easy to setup, and my switch to be un-managed (aka no IT expert needs to be around to configure the ports…etc) I've heard that the remote device can be a security issue....but I've looked around and it seems difficult to find a server (such as from dell or HP) that has 2 Terabytes of redundant (RAID 1) hard drive space. Also how much onboard memory would I need to have on one server that would someday have 2 Terabytes of memory...wouldn't that be really expensive? I also thought separating the data from the OS+apps would result in better performance and a server that is easier to manage and the server wouldn't have to cache data storage. The NAS emulates a windows share (CIFS). Also I will contact the software company about the active directory thing because I don't want to have to buy two servers that ridiculous.

Operating System on Server for client Computers? I am in Charge of setting up a server with about 8-10 business stations. So far we are going to get a PowerEdge 840 as a centralized server. the question i have is once i get that up and running... 1. How expensive would going wireless connectivity be, and if not they are all connected using ethernet? 2. We are going to get 20 license keys for Microsoft Small Business Server 2003. That is an operating system, but does that get installed on all work stations, not just the server? I guess what i am asking is if i am running a workstation connected ot the server, is it neccesary to get the Operating Sy stem Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 on every computer as opposed to continue running on Windows XP thank you Brian

Small home office file server vs. dropbox.com? I have a small home office business. I need to network my 4 computers. I use quickbooks, proseries (tax program), LaserApp, microsoft office, etc. I want to have all the files for all my computers in one location, instead of having 4 different versions, moving files back and forth with a memory stick. I also need to share my 2 printers. I am not proficient with computers, and I can't spend 30 hours learning to use a file server. My requirements are as follows: 1.) Very simple, with as little to learn as possible 2.) Shared files stored in one location, accessible from any computer on my home network 3.) Ability to use all printers from any computer 4.) Speed and efficiency, low tolerance for downtime/wasted time 5.) Storage space of 500GB should be more than sufficient My first question is, would a file server such as HP's Proliant MicroServer with windows server 2008 Home or standard edition be suitable to my needs? What server software would be best, I only know the little info that I have googled. I have heard that Linux is more complicated to learn than Windows OS's. Is there a better small server with an OS pre-installed that is still in the price range of $500-$1,000? Secondly, I have tried the free version of Dropbox.com's file syncing software. It seems to work as advertised, though the saving/uploading seems a bit slow. The main advantage that has drawn me to it is the simplicity. After a couple hours of tinkering, I already feel like I know the basic ins and outs of the program. Dropbox would cost more in the long run and syncs kind of slow, so the file server would be preferable IF a simple to set up, easy-to-use model existed. What is your opinion on Server vs. Dropbox? Do you have a third alternative that you believe would better suit my needs? Is there any other info I should be aware of?
how could i download a virtual machine for windows xp? hello, friends i hope to download a virtual machine for my pc to simulate a small server function like web based business app however, microsoft no longer support download page for windows xp to download virtual pc, how could i do that, or is there alternative version of that virtual machine. thanks
How much onboard memory do I need on a server that will eventually have about 2 Terabytes of data? Also I have an idea of the configuration but just want to see about recommendations on my products. My problem is that sites like (dell) dont even offer 2 Terabyte hard drive space for one slot in the server...because I would want to use Raid 1 and have two 2 Terabyte hard drives connected..maybe I'd have to use Raid 5 or find a different website to buy my server? I haven't bought any of my products yet but here is my idea of a small business network for 5 people with 2 printers, 1 scanner, 2 desktops, 3 laptops: internet connection--> wireless router (belkin N+)--> switch (3com officeconnect gigabit ethernet 10 ports)-->pc's,printers,server,scanner, access point I will also be using cat 6 (550Mhz) wiring and Kaspersky Anti-virus, and I am thinking about using either Microsoft Ftp publishing (comes with Windows Server 08) for file transfering or maybe filezilla or Winscp My server specs are as follows (from dell): Quadcore Xeon 2.4 Ghz ?? memory, 1 Terabyte x 2 drives Are these products sufficient for small business use? What access points do you recommend? All my laptops will meet the 802.11 n standard. I forgot to mention that my network is for a small doctors office...and I can almost ensure that it will not grow beyond 5-10 users I looked on cnet.com and certainly found that the Buffalo Terastation Home Server NAS (2TB) is my best option...but its uses mirroring and spanning instead of RAID and its write performance is slow due to its RAID 5 configuration. Should I be concerned? Also from a security standpoint what would I need to address in Windows if I have a NAS..will Windows file sharing be secure between the users/server/clients? Oh the other thing i wanted to point out was that we are running this program eclinical works on our server and they specify that the server for this software should not play any other role such as active directory, ras, and/or terminal service..clients with multiple tenant architectures will require an ewCW technical architect to specify hardware requirements. But yet they spec a minimum of a Quad Core 1.6Ghz processor and 4 gb of memory....they also specify the OS to take up 16GB of memory and the data to take up 30GB of memory....is this all the room I need on that server??
Im setting up a client/server network. A simple one. 1 fileserver, 2 desktops and 1 notebook.? Will be using Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and Windows server 2003 premium edition. Printer Networking With Vista 64? So in our small office, when I try to mount a network printer that is connect through someone else computer instead of a print server OR if they try to connect to mine I get a error message that it is basically invalid print drivers installed. I Figured this is because xp cant install vista print drivers and vis versa. The question is when I brows to locate the propper print driver for the propper OS it still gives me this error. It would be nice if it let me installed the printer anyway and allow me to update the driver manually, but it forces me to cancel. Is there something I am doing wrong? What Programs from this list are safe to uninstall? My computer is very cluttered from stuff a previous owner left on there. What is safe to get rid of, and what isn't? Need help setting up sales terminals? We are looking to move to the 21st century at our dealership, and we need to setup a system for our salespeople. We want them to be capable of responding to Internet inquiries, as well as uploading pictures and videos when their customers request them, engage live customers in chat on the website. Also, they might need to do other small tasks as well. Our first initial idea was to setup a terminal for each office and run them off a central location (WBTs)... but then processing power became an issue because if they need to edit a video, etc., it might become problematic, also, concerns with the wait time on uploading the content to the server, and usb, cd-rom drives, etc. Secondly, we've discussed a desktop workstation in each office with full capabilities (hard drive, cd, usb), and simply locking them down to just a few applications. Third, again, a workstation but with smaller hard drives and setting up a Windows server and allowing everyone to log on via it. But to me, the most logical solution is the full workstation and enabling logging software/remote access to monitor for misconduct. Speaking of which, do you know any decent applications (free?) to do so? We need to setup 10 offices total. We would like to keep the cost below $400 per terminal. Thanks for all your help! 1 day ago - 3 days left to answer. Additional Details Thanks for all the info! I believe I left some information out, we do have a pretty decent server room already, and we are fiber connected to the Internet. We must use Microsoft because our business software relies on it. And as for the "dummy terminals," could you describe what you'd normally stock the tower with? You see, everything we use related to inventory, billing, sales, etc, is Internet based and we can access it from anywhere. There's some software that needs to be installed on each computer though. Could you offer any more insight? Thanks!
Which antivirus application should I use for my needs? I have seven computers. 5 of which have 512MB of RAM, and two have 1GB of RAM, and all are running Windows XP Pro with 2.6Ghz Celeron CPUs. I have tried Microsoft Security essentials and it seems to use up a lot of resources. We are using these computers for a small business at the moment and for the time being we do not have a server so individual scanning is necessary.

Job interviews are becoming hard to find; let alone the job. And the scenario worsens if someone needs an H1B sponsoring to work. I know asking favors like this in the Yahoo Answers community is weird. But its just a hope that programmers from different companies would have a look at my skill sets and may be someone would refer me to his company thereby helping me to get an interview slot. I would be very thankful if you could help me out by forwarding my resume to your respective companies if they are looking for entry-level positions. I apologize for posting a favor like this here. If you need additional info, please let me know. I have already posted in job boards like collegegrad.com, careerbuilder, etc. But today, everyone knows that a person with a reference has more chances of getting an interview than the one who comes in through the job sites. I am also aware that I may have to be patient to get my interview calls for all those companies which I have applied. But from your side, I hope a small reference might help a long way.
Having trouble even getting an interview for a graduate IT job? Ok i lost my job about 3 months ago now under a stupid 90 day rule and the business said they couldn't afford me. I went to my employment agency afterwards and redid my CV etc. I handed out a few cold CVs to businesses and some of those businesses were really impressed with my CV but had no positions available. Plus a lot of other people have seen my CV and say its great and I even have an IT guy I know act as a mentor and he really likes it. The big problem is when I apply for an IT graduate job that has advertised I can't even get an interview. They just say there are candidates better qualified and have more experience. I know they are full of BS when they say that. I have an IT uni degree and 6 months IT work experience applying for jobs that require no experience. My CV is below. Anyone have any ideas why I keep getting turned down at the first step. Microsoft Office Outlook Calendar Question? I have a client who currently uses a 3rd party calendar from a company that is no longer in business. They have used this 3rd party calendar for over 15 years with no problems and it met all their needs. They are configured in a workgroup and use 2 different calendar databases. The main one every one shared and a second one that 2 users use in addition to the main one. Unfortunately this will not run on Windows 7 64 bit. They only have 4 PCs in the office and they were recently replaced with Windows 7 64Bit Home Premium. They only use Word, Excel and Outlook so they bought MS Office Home and Small Business 2010. They want to use Outlook calendar and share it with the 4 PCs in the office. However, Microsoft venders are telling me this will require the addition of an Exchange server, Adding a server with exchange is not a financial feasibility at this point for this company. Is there any way to get MS Outlook Calendar to work in a workgroup and share 2 different and separate calendars (with out a server) or does any one know of a 3rd party calendar package that can meet these parameters,
Windows Vista & networking Micrsoft Access problem? I have a small business with 3 networked computers all running a smallish access database. We have recently invested in 2 replacement computers with Vista. They hooked up to the network easily but we can't open up the access database, which is on the server, on these 2 new machines. It looks as if there is a conflict but can't find anything on microsoft's website to help. Can anybody help me please??
Microsfot 2007 and student messed up boss's computer? My boss decided to buy and download microsoft 2007 and student, it did not down load properly thus silly me volunteered to help him out. i called microsoft and they made me install Windows XP small business again because they said that the one in the computer was corrupt and was not allowing microsoft 2007 and student to down load. I did as they said ; I asked if i did this if it was going to change my bosses' defaults and outlook mail. Of course after installing XP small business after removing the corrupt one and finally instally microsoft 2007 things were not ok. My boss's outlook was receiving emails but not sending. I had to call the email server to hook me up and it starts running fine but then it starts acting up again and if you want to open the new word 2007 or excel 2007 the program starts installing again. I warned my boss to let the pros take care of it and for us to get a refund for the software he bought before all of this, i should've just let him go down in his own boat. Any suggestions on what is going on and what should i do ?
Tough one here, XP install related - need true guru.? I have a machine that will not allow me to install windows xp. As a background, i have multiple microsoft MCP certs, i have done thousands of OS installs using every microsoft product from windows 3.11 through vista premium 64bit. I was using this as a second home PC, used mainly in the bedroom to watch DVDs and access the internet or play games if someone else is on our primary PC. XP home was installed and running fine until I upgraded the CPU from celeronD 2.66Ghz (single core) to P4 2.8Ghz HT (xp and vista see this as a dual-core cpu). I started getting random shut-downs. No warning, no BSOD, just reboots. I made sure BIOS was configured to enable HT. That didn't help. Using monitoring software, CPU temps were at the lower end of the normal range as I have a great cooling setup in this case. I try to get this CPU above 54C (well within P4 operating temps) and can't no matter how many apps/games I try to run at one time. I then figured it was the single core HAL needing to be changed to the dual core/hyperthreading HAL. No problem. Instead of simply trying to update or copy and replace the existing file, I decided to do a clean install. Using the same OS install CD-ROM, a retail upgrade version of XP Home, I run setup and format the C: Drive. Everything is going fine until I try to copy files. Certain files (approx 30 in all) won't copy no matter what I do. I thought maybe my disk had small scratches, but I took it to MMX and they cleaned it and it is better looking than many 'new' cd's or dvd's I have seen. I try install again and the same 30 files won't copy correctly. Ok, maybe it's just a bad disk. Lets try a little trick. I allow it to install to 100% (obviously, less the files that wouldn't copy). Windows setup has to quit in the GUI portion because Shell32 didn't copy correctly. Well, maybe since setup is trying to run, we can repair the install. I took out another XP install DVD (this time) and attempted to repair my current installation. Everything fine until it trys to copy certain files. IT'S THE SAME FILES THAT WON'T COPY. I'm not guessing, I had made a list of the files that wouldn't copy off of the CD and it matched exactly with the files that wouldn't copy using the DVD. This can't be a problem with a bad CD-Rom or DVD-Rom. I even tried switching out the DVD burner for a CD-RW drive instead. It's definately not a media or drive issue. I have run memtest with both 1 and 2 sticks present and get no errors. I have tried disabling HT'ing in the bios and still get the same results. Any true PC Guru's out there that have successfully dealt with this problem. I have seen others post questions regarding problems with XP refusing to copy files, but the answers given were usually clean the disk, get a new OS cd-rom, check BIOS, check RAM, etc... the things that I have already done. I am in a somewhat unique position due to the fact that I have licensed copies of Win95, Win98, Win2k (all versions including server and advanced server), XP home, XP media center, Vista 32 HB (also gets disk copy errors when i try to install on this PC), Vista Business premium, and Vista Home Premium 64. My MOBO shipped from the factory listing the CPU that I upgraded to as supported. I am at wit's end here. hdd was fine before the cpu upgrade. never had problem with crashes or memory/paging errors, etc... added note, i realize that my new cpu uses slightly more power than the old one, but my MOBO calls for 350watt power supply for a fully loaded system i am using a thermaltake 480watt power supply with 2 fans, one of which the speed is controlled externally by a knob that sits on a pci slot insert (although not designed for huge powerhungry GPU's, it's a killer power supply. my 1.5v 6600GT never caused problems before and PS had power to spare). again, never had any problems with this PC, not one using exactly the same sticks of RAM, same GPU, same HDD, everything exactly the same except the CPU. I am going to try and pull the battery to reset cmos settings and let it autodetect all, even though i don't think that will help anything. maybe stupid mcafee put something on to prevent a virus hijacking a HDD. if so, it still allows you to fdisk it and format it, just not reinstall oh, and can't flash bios as can't get OS to load. most newer bios are software based and run from windows application.
Help cannot make HTTP connection? Received Error 12007? I have a Dell Inspiron 2650, Windows XP, external Netgear wireless card. My connection status says excellent, but I cannot connect to the internet using Firefox or IE (they are both up to date). I did a Network Diagnostics test. Got HTTP: Error 12007; Configuration Mismatch, The server name or address could not be resolved. I called Dell they said that my service tag wasn't registered in my name, so they could not help me. I went to online help which said that the service tag was registered out of the country. I bought this computer from a small local electronic shop which is now out of business. PLEASE HELP and I don't have .Net from Microsoft Installed or Dell Support, because I can't connect to the internet to complete the download!
Possible to have user's files specific to each computer on the Windows Domain? I have a VERY small business network in which we require centralized management through Windows Domain. All of the computers currently run Windows 7 Ultimate and have specific local user accounts. We have a server ready to act as the Domain Controller, however the issue is that it does not have the disk space to handle all user's documents and files centrally. Furthermore, we do not have the budget to buy any upgrades or file servers. Is there a way to have the Active Directory work where users are centrally managed but files and documents are specific to each computer you are on? For example: Sally can login to any of the network computers through the domain but her Microsoft Word file that she wants to open is only on one of the computers and her folder of pictures are on another computer on which they were created. This may seem inefficient but our network is so small that it does not matter and we won't be expanding.
help i have no idea wat this means some body explain in short text 10 points best answer in plain explantion? Overview Instant messaging (IM) and chat are technologies that facilitate near real-time text based communication between two or more participants over a network. It is important to understand that what separates chat and instant messaging from technologies such as e-mail is the perceived synchronicity of the communication by the user - Chat happens in real-time before your eyes. For this reason, some people consider communication via instant messaging to be less intrusive than communication via phone. However, some systems allow the sending of messages to people not currently logged on (offline messages), thus removing much of the difference between Instant Messaging and e-mail. Instant Messaging allows instantaneous communication between a number of parties simultaneously, by transmitting information quickly. Some IM systems allow users to use webcams and Microphone which made them more popular than others. Due to this feature users can have a real-time conversation. In addition IM has additional features such as: the immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply, group chatting, conference services (including voice and video), conversation logging and file transfer. IM allows effective and efficient communication, featuring immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply. In certain cases Instant Messaging involves additional features, which make it even more popular, i.e. to see the other party, e.g. by using web-cams, or to talk directly for free over the Internet. It is possible to save a conversation for later reference. Instant messages are typically logged in a local message history which closes the gap to the persistent nature of e-mails and facilitates quick exchange of information like URLs or document snippets (which can be unwieldy when communicated via telephone). [edit] History In early instant messaging programs each character appeared when it was typed. The UNIX "talk" command shown in these screenshots was popular in the 1980s and early 1990s.Instant messaging actually predates the Internet, first appearing on multi-user operating systems like CTSS and Multics[1] in the mid-1960s. Initially, many of these systems, such as CTSS'.SAVED, were used as notification systems for services like printing, but quickly were used to facilitate communication with other users logged in to the same machine. As networks developed, the protocols spread with the networks. Some of these used a peer-to-peer protocol (eg talk, ntalk and ytalk), while others required peers to connect to a server (see talker and IRC). During the Bulletin board system (BBS) phenomenon that peaked during the 1980s, some systems incorporated chat features which were similar to instant messaging; Freelancin'_Roundtable was one prime example. In the last half of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, the Quantum Link online service for Commodore 64 computers offered user-to-user messages between currently connected customers which they called "On-Line Messages" (or OLM for short). Quantum Link's better known later incarnation, America Online, offers a similar product under the name "AOL Instant Messages" (AIM). While the Quantum Link service ran on a Commodore 64, using only the Commodore's PETSCII text-graphics, the screen was visually divided up into sections and OLMs would appear as a yellow bar saying "Message From:" and the name of the sender along with the message across the top of whatever the user was already doing, and presented a list of options for responding.[2] As such, it could be considered a sort of GUI, albeit much more primitive than the later Unix, Windows and Macintosh based GUI IM programs. OLMs were what Q-Link called "Plus Services" meaning they charged an extra per-minute fee on top of the monthly Q-Link access costs. Modern, Internet-wide, GUI-based messaging clients, as they are known today, began to take off in the mid 1990s with ICQ (1996) being the first, followed by AOL Instant Messenger (AOL Instant Messenger, 1997). AOL later acquired Mirabilis, the creators of ICQ. A few years later ICQ (by now owned by AOL) was awarded two patents for instant messaging by the U.S. patent office. Meanwhile, other companies developed their own applications (Excite, MSN, Ubique, and Yahoo), each with its own proprietary protocol and client; users therefore had to run multiple client applications if they wished to use more than one of these networks. In 1998 IBM released IBM Lotus Sametime, a product based on technology acquired when IBM bought Haifa-based Ubique and Lexington-based Databeam. In 2000, an open source application and open standards-based protocol called Jabber was launched. Jabber servers could act as gateways to other IM protocols, reducing the need to run multiple clients. Multi-protocol clients such as Digsby,Pidgin, Trillian, Adium and Miranda can use any of the popular IM protocols by using additional local libraries for each protocol. IBM Lotus Sametime's November 2007 release added IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway support for XMPP. Recently, many instant messaging services have begun to offer video conferencing features, Voice Over IP (VoIP) and web conferencing services. Web conferencing services integrate both video conferencing and instant messaging capabilities. Some newer instant messaging companies are offering desktop sharing, IP radio, and IPTV to the voice and video features. The term "instant messenger" is a service mark of Time Warner[3] and may not be used in software not affiliated with AOL in the United States. For this reason, the instant messaging client formerly known as Gaim or gaim announced in April 2007 that they would be renamed "Pidgin"[4]. [edit] Cooperation Standard free instant messaging applications offer functions like file transfer, contact lists, the ability to have similtaneous converstations etc. These may be all the functions that a small business needs but larger organisations will require more sophisticated applications that can work together. The solution to finding applications capable of this is to use enterprise versions of instant messaging applications. These include titles like Jabber, Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communicator, etc., which are often integrated with other enterprise applications such as workflow systems. These enterprise applications, or Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), are built to certain constraints, namely storing data in a common format. There have been several attempts to create a unified standard for instant messaging: IETF's SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and SIMPLE (SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions), APEX (Application Exchange), Prim (Presence and Instant Messaging Protocol), the open XML-based XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), more commonly known as Jabber and OMA's (Open Mobile Alliance) IMPS (Instant Messaging and Presence Service) created specifically for mobile devices. Most attempts at creating a unified standard for the major IM providers (AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft) have failed and each continues to use its own proprietary protocol. However, while discussions at IETF were stalled, Reuters head of collaboration services, David Gurle (the founder of Microsoft's Real Time Communication and Collaboration business), signed the first inter-service provider connectivity agreement on September 2003. This agreement enabled AIM, ICQ and MSN Messenger users to talk with Reuters Messaging counterparts and vice-versa against an access fee. Following this, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL came to a deal where Microsoft's Live Communication Server 2005 users would also have the possibility to talk to public instant messaging users. This deal established SIP/SIMPLE as a standard for protocol interoperability and established a connectivity fee for accessing public instant messaging clouds. Separately, on October 13, 2005 Microsoft and Yahoo! announced that by (the Northern Hemisphere) summer of 2006 they would interoperate using SIP/SIMPLE which is followed on December 2005 by the AOL and Google strategic partnership deal where Google Talk users would be able to talk with AIM and ICQ users provided they have an identity at AOL. There are two ways to combine the many disparate protocols: One way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM client application. The other way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM server application. This approach moves the task of communicating to the other services to the server. Clients need not know or care about other IM protocols. For example, LCS 2005 Public IM Connectivity. This approach is popular in Jabber/XMPP servers however the so-called transport projects suffer the same reverse engineering difficulties as any other project involved with closed protocols or formats. Some approaches, such as that adopted by the Sonork enterprise IM software or the Jabber/XMPP network or Winpopup LAN Messenger, allow organizations to create their own private instant messaging network by enabling them to limit access to the server (often with the IM network entirely behind their firewall) and administer user permissions. Other corporate messaging systems allow registered users to also connect from outside the corporation LAN, by using a secure firewall-friendly HTTPS based protocol. Typically, a dedicated corporate IM server has several advantages such as pre-populated contact lists, integrated authentication, and better security and privacy. Some networks have made changes to prevent them from being utilized by such multi-network IM clients. For example, Trillian had to release several revisions and patches to allow its users to access the MSN, AOL, and Yahoo! networks, after changes were made to these networks. The major IM providers typically cite the need for formal agreements as well as security concerns as reasons for making these changes. [edit] Mobile Instant Messaging Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) is a presence enabled messaging service that aims to transpose the desktop messaging experience to the usage scenario of being on the move. While several of the core ideas of the desktop experience on one hand apply to a connected mobile device, others do not: Users usually only look at their phone's screen — presence status changes might occur under different circumstances as happens at the desktop, and several functional limits exist based on the fact that the vast majority of mobile communication devices are chosen by their users to fit into the palm of their hand. Some of the form factor and mobility related differences need to be taken into account in order to create a really adequate, powerful and yet convenient mobile experience: radio bandwidth, memory size, availability of media formats, keypad based input, screen output, CPU performance and battery power are core issues that desktop device users and even nomadic users with connected network. [edit] Friend-to-friend networks Instant Messaging may be done in a Friend-to-friend network, in which each node connects to the friends on the friendslist. This allows for communication with friends of friends and for the building of chatrooms for instant messages with all friends on that network. Emotions are often expressed in shorthand. For example; lol. But a movement is currently underway to be more accurate with the emotional expression. Real time reactions such as (chortle) (snort) (guffaw) or (eye-roll) are rapidly taking the place of acronyms.[citation needed] [edit] Business application Instant messaging has proven to be similar to personal computers, e-mail, and the WWW, in that its adoption for use as a business communications medium was driven primarily by individual employees using consumer software at work, rather than by formal mandate or provisioning by corporate information technology departments. Tens of millions of the consumer IM accounts in use are being used for business purposes by employees of companies and other organizations. In response to the demand for business-grade IM and the need to ensure security and legal compliance, a new type of instant messaging, called "Enterprise Instant Messaging" ("EIM") was created when Lotus Software launched IBM Lotus Sametime in 1998. Microsoft followed suit shortly thereafter with Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging, later created a new platform called Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, and released Office Communications Server 2007 in October 2007. Both IBM Lotus and Microsoft have introduced federation between their EIM systems and some of the public IM networks so that employees may use a single interface to both their internal EIM system and their contacts on AOL, MSN, and Yahoo!. Current leading EIM platforms include IBM Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communications Server, and Jabber XCP. In addition, industry-focused EIM platforms such as IMtrader from Pivot Incorporated, Reuters Messaging, and Bloomberg Messaging provide enhanced IM capabilities to financial services companies. The adoption of IM across corporate networks outside of the control of IT organizations creates risks and liabilities for companies who do not effectively manage and support IM use. Companies implement specialized IM archiving and security products and services like those from Secure Computing, Akonix, SurfControl, and ScanSafe to mitigate these risks and provide safe, secure, productive instant messaging capabilities to their employees. [edit] Practical Use in Enterprise The popular embrace of IM technology for sharing information has quickly led to organizations adopting IM solutions for the perceived advantages that can be brought by it. As organizations are becoming more information based (McNurlin & Sprague, 2006, p.499) the need for effective knowledge sharing, team working and collaborative environments amongst employees has become vital, especially within more geographically dispersed teams. Typically IM conversations tend to have a certain "character", they are often short and only cover one topic. Media-switching and multitasking are common throughout, however IM might also be used between established coworkers and friends for longer, more intermittent conversation. In their report of IM use at the workplace Nardi et al. (2000) identifies the four primary functions of IM which are often cited in other reports, These primary functions are: Quick Questions and Clarifications Coordinating and scheduling tasks Coordinating impromptu social meetings Keeping in touch with friends and family IM is perhaps best suited to "Quick Questions and Clarifications" as this is the most often mentioned attribute in other reports. A user can "respond rapidly without the overhead of telephone or FTF interaction. For example, IDC reports, "Users see IM as a medium for quick, semi-permanent ‘flashes’ that beg a near-immediate response" (Isaacs et al., 2002). Nardi's second and third observations are enabled in part due to the "Presence Awareness" feature of IM clients in which the user knows who is "available". This is the most relevant for colleagues who share the same physical space as each other and even paves the way for other mediums to take up the task of communication e.g. F2F or Phone. The implication is that viable communication of any sort can in someway be encouraged through IM's "Presence Awareness" feature. (Issacs et al, 2002) supports this view, "IM in business might not be the main tool for of communication, it could just be the meeting point for another type of media e.g. conference calls. Nardi's third and fourth observations focus on the social use of IM, which have also been widely publicized in other report. That IM is used for keeping in touch with friends and arranging social events has led some employers to believe that it is used primarily for this purpose. According to (Issacs et al, 2002) a market study found that "'Fear of losing employee productivity’ was the greatest concern of businesses in regards to instant messaging". The study by (Issacs et al, 2002) goes on to suggest this fear is unfounded as it was found that on average "only 13% of conversations contained personal topics", and "only 6.4% were exclusively personal". [edit] Review of Products "IM solutions can typically be catagorised into two types: Enterprise Instant Messaging (EIM) and Consumer Instant Mesaging (CIM). Enterprise solutions use an internal IM server, however this isn't always feasible, particularly for smaller businesses with limited budgets. The second option, using a (CIM) provides the advantage of being inexpensive to implement and has little need for investing in new hardware or server software. However, in recent years open source IM clients such as Jabber have emerged that provide free EIM grade solutions. (Wikipedia,. 2008) For corporate use encryption and conversation archiving are usually regarded as important features due to security concerns. Sometimes the use of different operating systems in organizations calls for the use of software that supports more than one platform. For example many software companies use Windows XP in administration departments but have software developers who use Linux. Most people have had experience of using online chat and messaging over the internet whether it is with Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger, Skype or e-mail. One form of chat and messaging currently popular is Bebo. It is a non-corporate form of messaging which allows its user to create and maintain a social network. Libraries use chat applications and Morris Messenger is an application commonly used by them. This is a power based instant messenger, which uses Perl, SQL, and small Java. It accepts input from both staff and regular customers and saves important information in an SQL database built for the system. [edit] Risks and liabilities Although instant messaging delivers many benefits, it also carries with it certain risks and liabilities, particularly when used in workplaces. Among these risks and liabilities are: Security risks (e.g. IM used to infect computers with spyware, viruses, trojans, worms) Compliance risks Inappropriate use Intellectual property leakage Crackers (malicious "hacker" or black hat hacker) have consistently used IM networks as vectors for delivering phishing attempts, "poison URL's", and virus-laden file attachments from 2004 to the present, with over 1100 discrete attacks listed by the IM Security Center[5] in 2004-2007. Hackers use two methods of delivering malicious code through IM: delivery of virus, trojan, or spyware within an infected file, and the use of "socially engineered" text with a web address that entices the recipient to click on a URL that connects him or her to a website that then downloads malicious code. Viruses, worms, and trojans typically propagate by sending themselves rapidly through the infected user's buddy list. An effective attack using a poison URL may reach tens of thousands of people in minutes when each person's buddy list receives messages appearing to be from a trusted friend. The recipients click on the web address, and the entire cycle starts again. Infections may range from nuisance to criminal, and are becoming more sophisticated each year. In addition to the malicious code threat, the use of instant messaging at work also creates a risk of non-compliance to laws and regulations governing the use of electronic communications in businesses. In the United States alone there are over 10,000 laws and regulations related to electronic messaging and records retention.[6] The more well-known of these include the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, HIPAA, and SEC 17a-3. Clarification from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA") was issued to member firms in the financial services industry in December, 2007, noting that "electronic communications", "email", and "electronic correspondence" may be used interchangeably and can include such forms of electronic messaging as instant messaging and text messaging.[7] Changes to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, effective December 1, 2006, created a new category for electronic records which may be requested during discovery (law) in legal proceedings. Most countries around the world also regulate the use of electronic messaging and electronic records retention in similar fashion to the United States. The most common regulations related to IM at work involve the need to produce archived business communications to satisfy government or judicial requests under law. Many instant messaging communications fall into the category of business communications that must be archived and retrievable. Organizations of all types must protect themselves from the liability of their employees' inappropriate use of IM. The informal, immediate, and ostensibly anonymous nature of instant messaging makes it a candidate for abuse in the workplace. The topic of inappropriate IM use became front page news in October 2006 when Congressman Mark Foley resigned his seat after admitting sending offensive instant messages of a sexual nature to underage former House pages from his Congressional office PC. The Mark Foley Scandal led to media coverage and mainstream newspaper articles warning of the risks of inappropriate IM use in workplaces. In most countries, corporations have a legal responsibility to ensure harassment-free work environment for employees. The use of corporate-owned computers, networks, and software to harass an individual or spread inappropriate jokes or language creates a liability for not only the offender but also the employer. A survey by IM archiving and security provider Akonix Systems, Inc. in March 2007 showed that 31% of respondents had been harassed over IM at work.[8] Companies now include instant messaging as an integral component of their policies on appropriate use of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and other corporate assets. Within the company there is also the risk of employees using instant messaging to release confidential information and project details to an outside source. This issue is best controlled by a combination of written policy and technology. An organization's policies on use of IM in the workplace should be an integral part of the overall computing and network use policies, and should be published and communicated at least annually. In addition to written policy, organizations should implement "gateways" or IM security products to monitor content of inbound and outbound messages. Products from IM security providers (See section on IM security) typically allow administrators to set alerts and enforce policy (i.e. allow or block messages) based on keywords and regular expressions within instant messages. Employees may also misuse IM to communicate on a personal level with friends and family. This is poor use of a business’s time and resources, as the employee’s effectiveness will most certainly decrease due to the added distractions. (Licari, J., May 2005). Businesses often use IM security products to monitor and archive IM conversations for the purpose of minimizing this type of productivity drain. [edit] Security and archiving In the early 2000s, a new class of IT security provider emerged to provide remedies for the risks and liabilities faced by corporations who chose to use IM for business communications. The IM security providers created new products to be installed in corporate networks for the purpose of archiving, content-scanning, and security-scanning IM traffic moving in and out of the corporation. Similar to the e-mail filtering vendors, the IM security providers focus on the risks and liabilities described above. With rapid adoption of IM in the workplace, demand for IM security products began to grow in the mid-2000s. By 2007, the preferred platform for the purchase of security software had become the "appliance", according to IDC, who estimate that by 2008, 80% of network security products will be delivered via an appliance.[9] [edit] User base Note that many of the numbers listed in this section are not directly comparable, and some are speculative. Some instant messaging systems are distributed among many different instances and thus difficult to measure in total (e.g. Jabber). While some numbers are given by the owners of a complete instant messaging system, others are provided by commercial vendors of a part of a distributed system. Some companies may be motivated to inflate their numbers in order to increase advertisement earnings or to attract partners, clients, or customers. Importantly, some numbers are reported as the number of "active" users (without a shared standard of that activity), others indicate total user accounts, while others indicate only the users logged in during an instance of peak usage.
