What are the most essential features for a managed dedicated server plan? I want to open an online business that will allow customers to have accounts. Some managed dedicated hosting plans have features that others do not and I am a litte confused. One company mentioned something about bandwith overage but I was not sure on what it meant.

Our company has a worldwide presence and we offer 26 different versions of our website all based from our single server in california. Our customers in Asia and Europe say our website is too slow for them. So we would like to find a way to set up our main server in the us, and then mirror it to asia and europe. Ideally we would like to find a managed hosting solution that can handle the coordination as well as server maintenance, so we can spend our efforts on the website itself. Unmanaged dedicated server questions? Hello, I am considering starting a website that will require a dedicated server the thing is that I would much much rather an unmanaged server to a managed one simply because a managed server is soo much more expensive. The problem I have is that I have never before administered a server of my own with such depth and control over it and the extent of my knowledge is an account with a shared host. The site will only be using a small php script and I couldn't imagine any intensive changes to the server ever being needed. My question is would you recomend me getting an unmanaged server? Are they difficult to administer? Can you learn how to administer one just by having one?(exerience) Are they as daunting as they sound? Why do dedicated server service prices vary so much? I'm trying to purchase a dedicated Linux server service (e.g. 2G Ram, 80GHDD Raid, Pentium 4 or above (not Celeron), online incremental backup, dual internet access, unmanaged service) with Red Hat 4. We will put our own software on it and remotely manage the server. I understand that SLAs differ but the price range is huge! So far £90pm to £260pm! There just doen't seem to be a market rate!

When setting up a dedicated mail server, how should I set up my DNS settings on the primary and new server? Concerning the mx record, that is already being managed by a 3rd party name service provider. It will not have to change since we are not getting a new external IP address. A representative from that company, though, said that some DNS settings will have to change on my end to make sure that mail is routed properly to the new server instead of the old (primary) server where we are currently set up using different mail server software. (We are transitioning from MailEnable to MS Exchange Server 2007). Can anyone offer any advice concerning these DNS settings? How much attention should I give to my event viewers? I am running two 2003 Small Business Servers. One is a dedicated Exchange and Symantec console. The other is a Domain controller, Terminal server, DHCP, and file server. I have only been managing these servers for about 1 - 2 yrs. I am doing my best to learn as I go. I am simply looking for words of wisdom from someone w/ experience. I have made it a habit to look at the event viewers on both of those machines on a routine basis. Both machines have errors logged on them. Although, both machines seem to be running fine aside from the actual errors logged. There are no symptoms to report. I have done some reading and research on the specific event id's. I guess my question is also, should I be pulling my hair out on each error logged on both those servers even if the machines show no other symptoms? I just don't want to break something while I am trying to fix an error that does not affect my overall functionality.

How do I set up a static ip? I wanted to make a dedicated server for gmod, so i did. I got a couple of addons working, and I could connect to the server. However, no one else could. I figured out that I needed to first set up a static ip, and then forward some ports. So I started the command prompt and typed ipconfig/all and pressed enter. Here are the important things: IPv4 Adress: 192.168.1.47<Preferred> Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1 Ok now here's the problem part. For DNS servers this is what it shows: 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.1 Yep. It has the same one twice. So when I went to control panel, manage network connections, properties, Internet Protocol IPv4, properties, and typed in the numbers i found, my internet no longer worked so i went back to the automatic settings. I'm guessing the problem is with the DNS server addresses. Help would be much appreciated.

Email Question? I have a web site that I am soon to manage and the client has an OPT IN email newsletter database. Do you think its best to go with a third party host for this with a dedicated SMTP server or try and run batches from the regular host SMTP server? I was thinking it might be nice to build a media server for our TV, but it might be a better idea to buy a console to do this. This is mainly highlighted by the fact that there are netflix clients as well, and the implementation would be easier to use a console than configure a dedicated HTPC computer, as well as be cheaper. I mainly have Xvid AVI's, but have some Divx and MKV content as well. I'd prefer if they were all supported. is IP to IP (direct IP connection) for video chat possible?? I'm currently using Yahoo Messenger for chatting with webcam and notice that more often than not, the video streaming lags. While at the same time, I have this device from D-Link (DVC-1000 which is a stand alone webcam for video conferencing that turns your TV into a video conferencing device. Of course the other party should also have this device) and upon observation and comparison, I can't help but notice that when I use DVC-1000, there's no lag at all while YM based and/or MSN Messenger based video chats often has lags in video streaming. Could it be that D-Link's host server for this service is better and more dedicated for video conferencing than MSN and Yahoo?? Lastly, any of you guys have a much better host for FREE video conferencing that is better than MSN & Yahoo? And of course, nothing will beat I guess direct IP to IP video chatting as there will be no host to manage the process, is this direct IP to IP video chatting possible? If so, how do I set it up?

Windows Firewall/Router? Hi, I’ve been asked for work to setup a windows based firewall to sit in-between the internet and a small dedicated network we are setting up for visitors. Basically the setup should go : “Intenet” > “ADSL Modem router (netgear)” > “windows 2003svr box running firewall (with 2 network cards)” > “cisco switch” > “visitor PC/Laptops .etc” I can’t just use the routers built in firewall as it does not meet the companies audit/logging requirements. So far I have tried plugging the windows box into the switch and the router then bridging the Ethernet connections; this will allow traffic to pass through the server but not much else (making it a big glorified switch). I thought that by doing this I could use on the windows firewall to manage and log traffic on the bridge but it doesn’t... Additionally TCP/IP filtering (from advanced TCP/IP options) doesn’t seem to work on a windows bridge. Another Idea I’ve had (but haven’t tried) is to setup a new network on the server by running DNS/DHCP and setup windows routeing to have the netgear routers network and this new network talk.
