Why can't I upload a file to my LINUX server with apache as owner and apache as group? I recently switched to a dedicated LINUX server am having trouble uploading files. The default upload owner and group is apache, and for some reason I can run PHP functions mkdir and chmod but NOT chgrp or chown. Ultimatly the PHP move_uploaded_file function is failing due to the apache group and owner. Any ideas how to fix this? The problem was related to safe mode being off. Once I changed the local and master values of safe mode, it worked.

Why do dedicated server service prices vary so much? I'm trying to purchase a dedicated Linux server service (e.g. 2G Ram, 80GHDD Raid, Pentium 4 or above (not Celeron), online incremental backup, dual internet access, unmanaged service) with Red Hat 4. We will put our own software on it and remotely manage the server. I understand that SLAs differ but the price range is huge! So far £90pm to £260pm! There just doen't seem to be a market rate!

What linux distro makes a good game / file server? I'm going to be building a home server soon that will serve as both a filesharing server and a game server for LANs, and I'm having trouble deciding on an OS. FreeNAS looked good, but I don't think it'll run the majority of deticated game servers, and I don't want to shell out $100 for Windows Home Server (plus I could use the linux experience). It needs to: -Run, at the very least, the Source Dedicated Server tool in Steam, and hopefully the DS tools for other games. -Be able to share video files over a network using something similar to Windows Media Sharing, so that we can stream content onto our TV. -A web-based GUI for setup over another computer (like FreeNAS) would be nice, although I suppose we could just use a remote desktop tool. -Be able to use a built-in torrent program. If there are plug-in available for Windows Home Server that could allow use of all these things, I would be willing to bite the bullet and pay for WHS, but as I said, something in Linux would be great because I need the experience. Thanks for any help!

Help me to edit my /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources file on a Godaddy dedicated server? Hi, I am trying to edit a file on the root directory on my server. It is a dedicated server on godaddy. I have version CentOS release 4.4 (Final) i686 i386 GNU/Linux and the kernel is 2.6.9-42.0.10.EL and Apache (web server) Version: 2.0.52-28.ent.centos4 I have PuttY and CuteFTP Pro as well as the Simple Control Panel (Godaddy's Simple Control Panel) How can I gain permissions to edit that source file (or any other file in the root)? I am familiar with the su - root command but I can't find where to use it in CuteFTP. In PuttY I can gain root permissions but don't see a feature to edit and save a file like the FTP view of CuteFTP. In Godaddy's Simple Control Panel I don't see any option to let me do any sort of an edit and save the changes I made to a file. Help please, I am just learning!
How much memory/disk/cpu do I need for my dedicated server? It's going to run linux, host a MYSQL database and time scheduling application that needs to be able to support at least 200-300 concurrent users. It is an AJAX application for time scheduling so there's no big number crunching going on or anything. Is the server side bottleneck more likely to be memory or disk or CPU? I don't want to spend more than I have to on dedicated hosting but I need to make sure my server is powerful enough to support the app.
linux server question? My friend just bought an amd dedicated srvr that runs fedora core 6 and want me to help him manage it. High Speed File Server - Need Suggestions? I am having trouble with read/write speed on my shared NFS drive. The drive is used as data store for a pipe line of applications which process huge amounts of data. There are 3 applications in the pipeline. The first application fetches the data and stores it in the NFS shared drive. The second app processes the data and stores the result in the same drive and so on. All our applications run on linux servers and NFS server is different from the servers from where we run our apps.I think the bottle neck is read/write speed of the NFS drive. Would purchasing a dedicated File server improve performance ?
How to install SVN for web development (dev sites/live sites)? I was looking into installing subversioning onto my linux dedicated server. I do web development on it and would like to not only use the box as a central repository, but also set it up so that from that repository, I can easily move content to a development sites as well as live sites. Basically the development sites would be mirrors of the final committed files in the repository. Then the live sites would be updated to reflect the content of the development sites when triggered somehow. Any tips on the best way to do this? I already have SVN installed on my server. Just need to know the next steps to get things set up. You're going to have to elaborate - what is the "checkout" of my repository?
Team Fortress 2 Server Requirements? What are the hardware requirements for running a dedicated Team Fortress 2 server under Linux? Specifically I am interested in how many megabytes of RAM I should expect to use per player and (since MHz is pretty much irrelevant now) I guess "how many players you can get on various models of Athlon 64 X2 without lag" unless there is a more elegant way of expressing it.
Video Streaming Script? I have some avi files in the directory of my dedicated linux server. Would it be possible for me to watch these files and the server stream them to me using some sort of script available rather than me having to download them to my computer from the server?
Need help with server setup? we have a website that is growing fast. We currently have one dedicated server (an IBM Xserver 335 - dual xenon 4gb ram linux) that is raided (duplicated). Why did MAILER DAEMON return my e-mail from an e-mail address I never sent to? I have a dedicated linux server of which I sent an e-mail from (account A) to another email address account (account B) of mine on a different shared host and I did successfully receive the email in account B. However, from account B, I also received a MAILER-DAEMON email from my server stating: I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses. This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out. <abc@abc.com>: Sorry, no mailbox here by that name. vpopmail (#5.1.1) I don't know who abc@abc.com (email changed for privacy) is and I never even e-mailed this person. Does this mean my server is hacked or has a spam bot overriding my mail server or something? Sorry I meant to state that I had received the MAILER-DAEMON email in my Account A, with the same returned message on the bottom as the email I had sent to Account B!
How do I create a subdomain ? I've bought a dedicated linux server, I set the dns entries for my domain (moose.ro) to point to it and now I want to create a subdomain (beta.moose.ro). How do I do it ? I have ssh access and the root account on my server, and the dns has already propagated and it works. I don't have a web interface. Only the bash shell thru ssh. There must be some fancy nix command for me to use. I was informed I don't have cpanel or any other type of web domain administration at my disposal. I have to do it all by hand from the shell. I don't know how the hell to choose the best answer on Yahoo Answers, but THANKS Akshay K ! I fixed my problem thanks to your help

Network of Dedicated Servers? I am looking for a number of servers (say 40 dedicated machines) each with their own IP, not in the same IP address range, spread around the world. It can be Linux of windows PCs. Does anyone know of a good solution or service for this? I have looked into EC2 from Amazon but they do not have the support I need. Ideas? Note: I am not looking for caching services or exclusively web hosting. The machines should have different external IPs, possibly different locations and also be able to run desktop windows applications. The servers will be working independently. They will also be running a .NET desktop application and another 3rd party windows application and need a connection to the internet. Linux or Mono wont work. Linux would work if the version support vmware.

Running shopping cart software on a home server.? I have an extra dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 2 GB DDR, dual SCSI server lying around that I would like to put to use as an ecommerce web server. What kind of things do I have to be careful about? I have limited linux knowledge but can do about anything I need to by looking up how to. I do not store credit card information on any of our servers or computers, this one won't be any different in that regard. I am interested in learning more about managing linux servers, and I though this would be a great way to do it. I currently have a dedicated IP and a 7m down / 512k up connection. I can easily upgrade to a 15/1 connection and even a 15/2 connection if I have to. How much traffic can a 512k up connection handle?

Centralized Linux network with roaming profiles? Next week I am gonna have to start building a small network for my school (seven desktop computers, one server), running Linux. We want to have a somewhat centralized network, where you can log into your profile on any computer, and your documents/settings are all there. Exactly like roaming profiles on a windows active directory server. Is it possible to do something like this. If so, what would be the easiest way? The server would be the one used to hold the profiles and settings and that. We already have a dedicated router, so the server will not be running anything else. Also, the teacher I am building this for prefers Ubuntu for the desktops. I don't think the system running on the server will matter as much, but it must have a GUI.
What should I do with my Linux box? I have a second computer. It's 1.8 GHz Athlon with 80 GB and 512 MB of RAM. It's running Ubuntu 7.10. I have no use for it. What should I do with it? Turn it into a media drive? Use it to constantly download stuff? Dedicate it as a server? Any ideas?
Client FTP t o my Server? Hi, I have a dedicated gaming server Box. I'm not to sure what to install just yet as a OS, Linux or Windows, but the Q is: How do I make it so clients can use FTP to access the server box? Like access there own IP that was provided to them? Thank you. PS: I belive it's something like what Web Hosters use. How can I do something like that? Thanks again. I have a dedicated T3 connection(32MB+) And I don't mean there IP, I mean if i get mulitiple IP's from my ISP, (dedicated) How to I get them to access a spacific part of the server. Thanks!

Is Windows XP good for a home network with shared external hard drives? I have setup one of my computers to be dedicated to host all of my external hard drives at home. I find that the transfer rate suffers greatly (from 2 times to 10 times slower than being directly connected to the computer needing the files). All hard drives are usb external. I was wondering if a WRTSL54GS storage router with USB hard drive sharing could be faster for data access on a home network than going through a winXP computer? Would linux work well enough to dispurse the data faster? Something like Ubuntu server edition or something? How does linux work with other windows os based computers on a small home network? All I need in the end is to have a place where all my ext. drives are connected and accessible with good transfer rates from other computers. Thanks.
Self-Hosting vs. VPS: which is right for me? I have two hosting needs: PHP and Rails. I've had (a bad) experience hosting a PHP site on a shared server. I've also briefly run a simple PHP server for a hobby site with low-availability standards. Now that I'm considering running a serious, large site (Ruby on Rails), in addition to a few small existing PHP sites, should I host myself, or choose a Virtual Private Server? * I have a 3.0GHz P4 / 1GB ram machine I could dedicate to hosting. * I am familiar with general computer security principles, programming, and Linux * I have a Comcast cable connection (no static IP) * I can't imagine spending much more than $50 / mo. to start. I'll add any details you consider relevant.
Linux or Windows? Well i have windows vista atm... (Dont tell me XP is waay... better lol) And i saw that some of my dedicated CSS servers were running on linux fedora. But i was wondering because i used ubuntu one time and i put in a CD and it didnt reconise the file type. But is fedora better and will it go faster than WIndows vista? Also will i still be able to download stuff like steam and counter strike source, world of warcraft and what not? If fedoria sucks what other linux should i get if i need to get one? :D Also what about photoshop?
One Last Linux/WINE Question...Please? OK, I am trying to set up a dedicated media server. I need to run many different formats of video, because I collect subtitled non0import anime (among other Japanese films). The players I need are Media Player Classic (CCCP), GOM Player, VLC Player KM Player...and a few others. I have audio in standard mp3, as well as FLAC and APE, so I need to run Foobar2000, Winamp, etc. I would also need to power either an 8800GT or 8800GS video card and an HT Omega Striker 7.1 sound card. Is there hope for me on this...or am I doomed to Vista? Thanks again. 16K: I need all of these players because fansubs are VERY particular. Some will only run on one player. I know it sounds odd, but it is true. Thanks for the info. Also, no specific reason for Vista. Three of my boxes run XP, but my main computer runs Vista and it would be a major pain to change back to XP.
What was the violation? What was the violation? No reason given. Details of Violation: If you are using Apache to host your site just go to the logs section. If it's shared hosting log into your site with ftp then cd ../logs and download the files there. If you are on a dedicated host it depends on where your apache conf file tells apache to put the logs. This is different on Linux, windoze, BSD, etc. Even under Linux it's different depending on what distro. If you have control panel or plesk you can just log in and view your logs. I have a shell script I used to use that downloaded my logs dailly and put them into a DB sorted by which server and what kidn of page hit it was. There are also free log analyzers if you are using Apache as your web server and Linux as your home OS. If you are running a dedicated Linux host you can install these and view the results from windoze machines as web pages. Reading others post. Alexa is not going to be remotely accura This is the part that was cut off. No reason given in the reason field. They are only accurate to represent a small fraction of web users who adopt the toolbar and find it compatable with thier web browsing. I was rather disapointed.
